Just got my car running again today after following this tutorial, my belt had been installed wrong by a previous person and i marked out the belt going off the tooth counts from the manual, Followed the rest as per the video and my car is purring like a kitten, DO NOT use a claw pulley for your harmonic balancer, use a proper harmonic balancer puller, use washers on 2 m6 bolts in the balancer and they pull off easy enough. Thankyou Stephen you saved me paying somebody! :D
Thank you!! AWESOME video series! I just bought a 1990 300zx and we are doing a tear down right now. I wish I ran into these videos BEFORE we started! We are trying to pull off the heads this weekend to get them checked.
I'm glad you mentioned Mizmo I just ordered one kit. They had a great web site so I was willing to order from them. Fun Fun job this really is. Not bad unless you never done any timing belts on any vehicles. Thanks for the info.
Your right. I did my timing and just used the 6mm side bolt to set tension. Needless to say i found myself redoing it a month later since my autotensioner bearing sounded like a super charger. set the hydraulic pin to 4mm with the 6mm bolt. Then loosen all 3 mounting bolts and push slightly on the belt with the whole tensioner. Lock it down and remove the 6mm bolt. And DONT forget to do the factory rotations. belt deflection changes quite a bit on this motor.
yeah don't confuse them..the belts with the "marked lines" are fine for lining up on TDC etc but once you do the "turn it over two revolutions"( of the crank gear and usually needed to let the tensioner set) the marks on the crank gear and the cam gear(s) should line back up but (and as you did duly note) the pre made marks on the belt will not until the engine turns over many times. I commend you, pretty damn good vid, meaning better than many I have seen on various other timing belt jobs.
This is a naet trick. Im getting ready to do this and was told the tensioner requires adjusting. Is this still true if you never loosen it in the first place and just rotate it as shown ? If so... is there a tension gauge or something letting you know the tension is correct? Nice vid and cool trick by the way...
I am doing this at the moment, following the nissan manual. After releasing the tentioner bolt are you not supposed to reset the tentioner and do a deflection test?
Hey brother I need a big favor maybe it's to late yo do it but how c as n I get a hold of you. I'm doing the timming belt on my 300zx but while i was removing the timming belt the passenger side cam gear moved a little bit I did not noticed until I installed the timing back so my question is this do all the timming Mark's have to line up perfectly with the dot cause all line up perfectly except the driver side 1 is off by like a teeth
do I have to lock the cams before I remove the belt. my engine is in the car. is there a tool to lock them, or will they move when the belt is taken off. thx
Dayco is an amazing belt. I have two alfa romeo's. One being a 91 164. The early year 164s were famous for timing belt issues. Mostly due to crappy after market belts and limited cam wrap on one pulley. I've never had an issue with a good quality dayco belt. Great video man. I plan on owning a 300zx and will use this video for reference. How easy is it to gain access to the belt with the motor in the car?
How did you know it needed to be replaced? Mine has an irregular idle, cuts out a little between 2000-2500rpm and the the left side knocks a little, do you think it is the belt tensioner, one mechanic told me to change spark plus and oil which did nothing and the another mechanic hooked it up to a computer and did not find anything wrong. can't pass smog write now. I did here a belt squeak a couple of months ago when I first turned it on.
hi do you know how come my car won't start after i replace the timing belt? when i turn the the 2 cams sprocket on the passenger side to change the oil seals it kind of snap or sprung into a position so i turn it back to the position before that and do you think that cause the problem for my car that won't start? can you help me fix this thank you in advance
If you still need help with this, there are videos on here for that question. Easiest way is to rent a compression tester from an auto parts store or use yours if you have one. 1. Install the hose from the test kit to the spark plug hole in the number 1 cylinder. 2. Grab a balloon, yes a balloon. Wrap it on the end of the hose. 3. Once you do those 2 steps you will turn the crankshaft by hand and you will knowtist the balloon will inflate and shrink like a vacuum is on it. After a full turn if the balloon inflates youre on the compression stroke. If it shrivels up like a vacuum that is the exhaust stroke. You're welcome.
Hi,i put a new timing belt in my 300zx tt in early 2008,the car has been sitting since,i am getting it back on the road should i get it replaced again?it has only around 200 miles on the belt. Also i live in ireland would this effect the deterioration because of all the rain.Thanks;-)
it's a bit tough, but you simply rotate the cams by hand when aligning the belt. the exhaust cam rotates easily using an 11" socket wrench, and the intake cam can be carefully rotated into alignment using both hands. having a friend helps a lot with the intake cam. another tip, the passenger side cams will stay in place after you rotate them by hand, just be careful when laying the belt over, it will only take a little bit of force for them to snap back to their resting position.

Excellent example of great teaching your explanations and showing in a manner that it’s visually comprehended is excellent well done

Best Explanation on UA-cam!!! Everyone else is extra!!
Do I have to take the valve covers to do this, or do the head cams stay where they are when I pull off the old belt?
"this came from advanced auto parts, this is a good quality belt". -_-
Nice work, i cant wait for the other videos +1 on the build, i cant wait to see the turbo set up

how do i set the at top dead center if the belt is not on ???
the belt was taken off without setting it at top dead center

My engine is out and this helps me a lot. Thanks!
engine break in video!! yes, lets see it. i love vg30de content
thank you for the video. Please make more!

Use a gates racing belt, not much more money, kevlar and way higher quality.
I just finished the job. It's not bad. Use this guide: www.ttzd.com/tech/timingbelttech.html
I used a Gates kevlar belt.

Hi! i'm doing my timing belt change and how do you line up the mark on the cam gear to the dimple because my cam gear doesn't have a mark on it?
Thanks for taking the time to make these vids, appreciate it! Cheers :-)
Dude, ok I got the Mark's on tdc. But how in the world do I tell, how did you know you know your engine was on compression stroke

great video. Well illustrated. This has been helpful. Keep it up.
The Kroma
how many times clockwise to get to compression stroke and will all 24 valves be closed?
engine break?
yo can you make a video on the alternator forgot how to put it back in...thanks man
Do the cam gears move all of the sudden when u take the timming belt off
Can I put a vq30dett in a G35
What if the engine is still in the car...
Also would i need a tool for holding the cam,s?
what happens if the sprokets on the passenger side rotate after taking off the belt?
how to you set them back into place
