  • Did you know Andrew Wyeth considered himself an abstract painter? Ian Roberts released a video recently called Some Insights Into Artistic Growth where he talks about Wyeth, his work and process, and his own experiences of doubt and struggle with his art. It’s a great video so check it out: • Some Insights into Art... As a native Philadelphian and admirer of Wyeth, his practice and sensibilities, in this video I continue the conversation about Wyeth, his work and composition. Thanks for watching!

A print of Andrew Wyeth’s ‘Master Bedroom’ has taken pride of place in our bedroom (and there have been MANY) for about 30 years. The light he captures in that painting and so many others is absolutely stunning, and what you’ve said about the relation to abstract paintings… well… it was kind of like a light came on. Thank you for deepening my understanding of the beauty of art.

I really enjoyed this one, Marianne. It is wonderful to take the opportunity to really look at a painting, it's emotional quality and the narrative that may be present, and, if you're an artist seeking to learn about techniques, to examine the compositional elements. I have learned more about Andrew Wyeth's artwork by looking alongside with you. I remember well our trip to the Brandywine Museum. Such a wonderful place and yes! one really needs to see his work in person. Thank you!

Hi Anne! So glad you enjoyed this video... your perspective on how to look at and talk about art is always thoughtful and well stated. I really loved the PHL museum trip that we did together in 2019... just before the pandemic, which made that kind experience seem unattainable, yet we are back at museums again talking about art! Many thanks as always for your comments... Cheers to your practice and every growing skill and breadth of voice... 💙

Growing up near Andrew Wyeth and experiencing his paintings and subject matter firsthand, I often say that abstraction holds a secret power over realism.

Thank you very much for this walk-through of Andrew Wyeth's art. It helped me understand how I actually look at a picture (including some of yours that I subsequently found online). It was quite the aha moment for me. It brought into focus the reason I struggle with composition, and did it in such a way that moving forward will be much more satisfying. Heartfelt thanks!!!

Hi Everyone! I hope you enjoy watching this video about Andrew Wyeth's journey as an artist, his own identity as an abstract painter, how he thinks about his own painting, and how he can teach abstract artists a lot about composition and voice. Many thanks to Ian Roberts for kicking off my interest in sharing thoughts from my perspective as an abstract artist and a Pennsylvania native who lives close to where Wyeth "country" is! Watch this video and Ian's titled Some Insights into Artistic Growth. Cheers to your artistic practice!

I got to see Andrew’s work at the Fjord. What I found myself responding to is the subtle and varied way he uses colour in his brushwork. Compositions and shapes are very calming. Translucency in skin tones in the Helga pictures. Takes me somewhere else. So I think he did hit his aspirations!

I was lucky to see all 3 generations of artwork at Brandywine. By the way, you had stated in the video the painting, Christina, but it's actually called Christina's World.

Great that you've been able to experience seeing the 3 generations @ Brandywine as well. You are correct in pointing out my omission of the real title for Christina's World... and I know the real title BUT! It just slipped out the wrong way when I was filming and it passed under the wire in the editing process. Many thanks for your attention to this important detail. Thanks for watching!

Your work is about the only abstracted art I enjoy. It evokes feeling in a compelling mystery. Most seem like a chaotic mess or too simple to my eye. Like puzzle pieces that have no place to fit. Or hidden messages in a boring piece I can find no interest in long enough to wonder. Maybe my amateur work is abstracted, although I’ve thought otherwise. I would have missed the question on the quiz if asked what kind of art Wyeth created. 😊Interesting video, thank you!

His use of abstraction to create the realist image is probably best observed in preliminary drawings he made, many of which were probably drawn from memory. In describing himself as an abstract painter, he compared himself to Jackson Pollock and when you look at the surfaces of Wyeth's paintings up close you find that it's not an analogy. The surface is often filled with speckled, spattered bits of paint that are just as rough and random as Pollock's spattered canvases.

Hi Althea, thanks for sharing your careful observations on Wyeth's brilliant work. You clearly are quite familiar with his paintings. I was unaware that he compared himself to Pollack, and totally see what you mean by his surfaces being in line with Pollack's paint application. Cheers and thanks!
