    Kriega has a great reputation for rugged and waterproof motorcycle luggage. I've been using the OS Panniers and have been very impressed, but have been looking at a smaller lighter solution for when I don't need or want the full pannier set up. The OS Base looked promising, but there was nothing to say it fitted the standard 790 Adventure. This video details the installation onto the 's' model as well as my initial thoughts after using the bags.
    There is a bit of a compromise to make as the pillion footpeg hangers need to be removed and replaced with the strap mounts. When Kriega tested the kit using the footpeg hangers, they found the edge to be sharp enough to damage the strap very quickly.
    The setup up is very light, weighing only 2.3kg including the two OS-12 packs. It's 100% waterproof and can be fitted/removed very quickly. In fact, I can now remove it in half the time that I did in the video example!
    I've broken the video down if you want to jump to certain parts;

    Thank you for the video. I just bought the same os-12 set for my 250 adventure. I also wrote to Kriega because I couldn’t find any information for the set up on my model. They told me they had never tried either, advised me to buy it, try it and if anything went wrong they’d give me a refund. I liked the honesty. I’ll try to install the base on Sunday.

    Rather than use the Kriega setup and remove the existing rear pegs, I put some kevlar loops onto the rear footpeg arms and then mounted the Kriega setup to these. Works really well so you don't have to remove the rear pegs if you have the odd passenger.

    One trick some guys do, is remove the plastic side panels on 790/890 that bulge out.
    Any bag laying against the plastic will end up grinding on the plastic. The whole package ends up narrower with out the side panels.
    If these bags and base werent so pricey Id consider them. The base piece alone is as much or more than some complete bags.
    Its nice but no dice.

    I bought the exact same setup for my standard 790 over the Xmas holidays. I’ve not used it yet (damned lockdown!) but my initial thoughts were of a typical high quality and well designed Kreiga setup. The only criticism I have of it is that I thought the harness could be mounted and left in place and the OS bags put on or off as required (some rides I only want to take my US10 bag). While this is certainly possible, fitting the OS bags to the harness is a bit of a faff and I would have liked them to be a bit more ‘quick release’. I guess this method of attachment does make them less easy to steal. Apart from that nit-picky point, very happy with the package.

    I bought this, and it's a well engineered piece of kit, but ultimately isn't for people who ever want to take a pillion, or do long overland adventures. It's more suited to a week/weekend away riding with some mates. Plus points are the lightweight of the kit itself, but the bags sit very high compared to standard throw over or rack panniers. So you your COG is high. With a roll bag on the rear rack you also lose the ability to easily gain access to the bags, and due to the tension of everything even if you don't have a roll bag getting in the way of the opening, it's still not easy to get larger objects in and out. Love Kriega stuff, but unfortunately these just aren't for me or my style of long distance touring across all terrains.

    I use the OS Base and OS18 panniers on my F650.
    The system I have seems to be generic and not manufacturer or model specific, when I called Kriega they said it wouldn’t fit because the seat was too wide.
    But I adapted the way it was supposed to mount and it works superbly.
    The one you tested in the video mounts slightly differently to mine the footrest mounts go through the footrest and then hook back on themselves on mine and not to the base (forming a V).
    The top mounts clip to the 2 Kriega loops on mine and do not loop around the rack and then back to the base.
    Looking at the setup you tested, I’m not sure which is best?
    But what I can say from experience is that you can remove the bags and leave the base on the bike.
    The attaching of the bags becomes easier with use, but always remember to slacken the top straps on the base before trying to attach the bags, it’s a lot easier that way 👍

    • @mancavemoto

      Good to know it works. Kriega make them for various bikes, but as you've proved they can obviously work on others. They do vary a little in the fitting, i've tried the one for the Africa Twin and it has a slightly different system to the KTM for the top fitments.

      You can remove the bags from the base and leave it in situ. However its actually much quicker to take the whole lot off in one go and trying to fix the bag with the base on the bike is very fiddly

    couldn't the forward securing straps be threaded through the pillion peg frame?

    • @mancavemoto
      @mancavemoto  2 роки тому +2

      They can, just, but Kriega found that because of the sharp edge on the pillion peg frame it was wearing through the strap. If you want to do that, you'd need to file down the sharp casting lip and repaint.

  • @Ironhawx

    I installed the SWMotech tail rack on my 790 R and then saw this video. I wish I had seen it earlier. Any chance of installing the OS base without having to “undo” the SWMotech tail rack? The rack wants the passenger supports, OS base doesn’t, if it’s just threading the loop it could work, but the handles themselves have a claw like shape and that could make fitting the bags a bit problematic?

    • @mancavemoto
      @mancavemoto  3 роки тому

      Which rack is it? If its fitted with the passenger grab rails then the OS Base bags won't fit as the handles get in the way. However the spacer in the kit is there to take up the space where the grab handles mount, so you should just be able to switch out the grab handles for the spacer and you're good to go.

      @@mancavemoto it’s the SWMotech Adventure Rack for 790 + soft luggage carrier extension (part # GPT0015235500B). It sits high on the back and needs the handle pieces for support during installation. The rack is ideally made for their Drybag s 600, 350 I can pack a whole house, but it sits high so stability could be a problem at speeds and trail riding. On the plus side, the hi-viz color and reflectors are a major safety bonus, you can spot me easily in the foggy dark. Additionally I’ve learned for us Canadian peasants, Kriega OS bags and mounts are nowhere to be found! Buying them overseas is prohibitively expensive + customs.

    I would of thought you could possibly leave the pillion pegs on, after all is just for the strap to loop through, and would keep the strap away from body work better than the supplied bracket, my friend as the exact size, he swapped them for the enduristan large which are also 12 ltr, but seem to be way more bigger in terms of what you can get in, as ever great review 👍

    • @mancavemoto

      That’s what I thought but Kriega tried it when testing and because the inside of the hangers are sharp, they damaged the straps very quickly. I had a look at it and its also not quite the right shape and is a bit of a stretch. The strap amounts do work well to be fair. Cheers

      View from afar, practical engineering wise; either (a) take a smooth file and gently chamfer/round any sharp edges inside the foot peg hanger, then touch up with compatible black paint, or (b) use a stainless steel 'D' shackle as an in between link element (D shackle hoop goes around the hanger leg).

      You can do that if you file down the sharp edge on the footpeg carrier. Kriega found when testing the kit it wore through the strap very quickly. Also the seat being higher at the back on the standard model means it’s a bit of a stretch for the straps.

    Pity that Husqvarna didn’t consider this for the Norden. Theirs looks awful. The only bugbear for me is the need to detach the whole thing rather than a base to mount detachable bags. Whilst my GSA hard luggage is huge it’s very easy to use and when my “adventure” is shopping for my old mum very handy. I’m looking to change bikes to something lighter and the 890 is on my radar. Luggage is my issue since most hard system frames are pretty ugly and look like an afterthought.

      I have these bags. Least fiddly bags I have owned. Mounted or removed from the bike in seconds.
      As the harness is a fixed size it’s just a case of wrap both sides around the foot peg hardware, then the two top straps around the luggage rack and pull tight. No adjusting overseat straps etc. Like wise taking it off is super quick, loosen the straps on top, unclip.
      The only fiddly bit is if you frequently changed bag sizes on the base, that would be annoying. Otherwise putting the bags on the base is a one time event.
