  • Time to get the soldering iron out as we try to put together a TF1230. I've had this card lying since before Christmas but I've finally built up the confidence to try assembling it.
    Thanks to SparxUK for arranging the group buy of PCBs and for putting together all the components for me.
    Massive thanks also to Mark SupaDupa for sending me the sockets. Mark builds these cards for sale so if you're looking one in the UK I can highly recommend his service. You can contact him through Amibay or on EAB.
    And of course I cannot forget thanks to Stephen, Mr Terrible Fire himself, for taking the time to design these boards for all us fans of the Amiga.

    Great video. Can you do us a solid and make a video showing how to use a raspberry pi to update the firmware of the TF1230? I don't see any videos on youtube showing this and I for one would greatly appreciate it. Things like where to get software, how to set up pie, how to make a connection from pie to TF and then how to flash the rom and test it. Cheers.

    Hello Sir, is there any chance to work TF1230 on Amiga CD32?

  • @MichalSchulz

    You will not see the disk activity on DISK LED of A1200 when using TF1230 IDE port. This can be however easily fixed.

    I have the same problem with my monitor, and use one of those surge protectors (Belkin SurgeMaster) that sit under the monitor to switch it on and off. Knowing my luck, pulling the monitor apart to replace the switch is just going to end in disaster. :P

      I was thinking the same thing, do I dare pull this thing apart to fix it or do I just leave well enough alone. The last 2 monitors I opened ended with more broken bits than fixed!

    Those MC68030 chips might have been purchased by scrappers to recover the gold from the chip.

    Why not reach out to Lisa Su and see if she can make CPLD's/FPGA's in a larger package to allow people who are scared of soldering fine connections to solder them into place.

    Another great video, thanks. I like your enthusiasm for projects, even if they can be a bit challenging. I'm trying to build up the courage to start on an RGB2HDMI.

      Thanks. Trust me if I can do it anyone can.
      The RGB2HDMI is a great place to start, just get yourself some decent flux, solder and a pair of tweezers. Take your time and it'll go together fine. Good luck and please let me know if you try it and how you get on.

      What you mean,"if you can donit anyone can"? :lol
      The leadt I need before starting any soldering whatsoever is a new pair of reading glasses, my current pair is about 5years old and I am certainly not getting any younger.
      I would be interested in seeing some A600 projects uf you have some of them lined up

      Would love to take on some A600 projects but I'd need to get an A600 first lol. It's the only wedge machine I'm missing. Hopefully I'll be able to add one to the collection one day.

    A lot of companies who make stuff like this are using IR laser soldering systems so I think that someone is going to have to build a domestic version of the IR laser Soldering system.

  •  2 роки тому +1

    I dont have an Amiga but i want one XD
    I also have that problem with soldering QFP on Voodoo1 and Voodoo2 cards repairing them sometimes.
    I also noticed the same thing swapping ram chip of the same style you used on my S3 Savage 4 and what worked better for me was to just hotair them on after tinning the pads with the iron.
    Seems more reliable, push it down a bit an profit!
    I tested out to hotair a QFP after soldering it with the iron, just go around the chip over the pins and reflow them, gave a nicer looking result b
    ut if that improves the "success" rate of pins getting properly solder idk yet, will find out next time I find a lose pin or two after swapping a chip.
    But might be worth testing.

    For those IDE connectors, I wonder if some male to female 90 degree connectors would be of use. The only machines that I've seen them in were CompuAdd 386 and 486 laptops, though I can't remember what models. One clue that I can provide is that they had small trackball mice built into them.

    • @CRG
      @CRG  2 роки тому

      Something like that might work and I assume you mean to help route the IDE connector to the other side of the board for access, only thing is there isn't a lot of room between the case and the card.

    I use Kcapton tape to line up the parts and to cover threw holes so I don't fill them during the soldering drag. I also preheat the PCB and place it vertical during the soldering.

    • @CRG
      @CRG  2 роки тому +1

      Good idea with the tape, especially to cover threw holes. On this card everything was fare enough apart so that wasn't a problem but when I get round to building the 1260, its a lot more compacted so I'll take your advice and cover them up.
      I normally would use the tape to hold smaller chips but in this case they were big enough to hold by hand. I did make a bit of a mess of the resistor arrays on the underside but as I said its been a good few months so was out of practise. That my excuse anyway ;)

    • @CRG

      Is the enable jumper fitted on the 1230?
      Hold both mouse buttons at power up to get to the early boot menu, from there you can see if the expansion is working.
      If however the Amiga isn't turning on at all then I'd guess you need the timing fixes done.

    • @xsm5525
      @xsm5525 2 роки тому

      @@CRG Hi thanks for the reply, Yes the jumper is fitted. I actually just found out my 1200 still has its 3.0 roms in it, I'm starting to wonder if it's that actually.

    • @CRG
      @CRG  2 роки тому

      @@xsm5525 yes that will be the problem. If you only have 3.0 ROMs you need to manually add the memory. It can be done easily enough with the addmem command, you can download addmem from aminet.

    Great video! One question though, couldn't you add the extra line to your startup-sequence on on the drive connected via the motherboard to then point it at the one connected to the 030 card? That way you wouldn't need the floppy disk?

    • @CRG
      @CRG  2 роки тому +1

    What is a gold top CPU better? I've heard a few people mentioning it. Thx

    • @CRG
      @CRG  Рік тому +1

      In terms of the 030 the gold top is the original ceramic package. These chips have the integrated MMU (memory management unit) whereas the plastic package chip doesn't. The gold tops also come in a 50mhz part whereas the plastic chips are at most 40mhz. That said though as I later find out the plastic chip can over lock further, I got it to 60mhz.

    • @stevenross-watt8640
      @stevenross-watt8640 Рік тому

      @@CRG thanks. So when I buy a TF1230 that runs at 50mhz I'm now wondering if it's gold top or something less capable.

    • @CRG
      @CRG  Рік тому +1

      @@stevenross-watt8640 to be honest it more than likely will be the 40mhz plastic chip (like I have on this) overclocked to 50mhz. The MMU makes little difference for just games but yes it is nice to have the full ceramic gold top chip. Problem is they are easily twice the price.

    FYI , if you want to be able to boot off the TF1230 IDE, you need specially adapted ROMs' (3.2)

    • @CRG
      @CRG  2 роки тому

      Or you can create a custom 3.1 rom which is what I intend to do. Not made the plunge and bought 3.2 yet.
