Hey, Amir, this video is very helpful and also I am able to start working on ms project 2013 after watching this tutorial. Thanks for such a good video and making each and every step clear is the best thing in this tutorial. cheers
Amir . thank you indeed you have very good relatory and explanation skills. I have only one or two point missing when you talk about dependencies: 1. Start to start: in your slide you mention that the theoretical meaning is that a task cannot start until another one is started but then when you apply onto your project plan you simply say that the task can begin when needed. I guess the correct one is what you initially stated in the slides. 2.when you create a multiple dependency you don't consider that in your Project plan every task have been links to the one above which makes it literally a subsequential project (no possibility to overalap tasks) so when you say that for instance task #7 needs to start after #5 and for this you put a predecessor 5 to task 7 this is already implicit in the fact that 7 is linked to 6 which is linked to 5 itself. So no need to specify that
marcogtturbo Thanks for the corrections. will look into it and see if can add some comments in the video. I don't use MS Project, had watched a 10 hours tutorial and thought about explaining it my way within 2 hours.
Demonstration is quite understandable right now I have downloaded free software and started practicing on Job Site. Thanks & please keep publishing your videos....
Just FYI, refer to 14:08 time mark in the video. It appears you meant to switch the first task back to .5days, but you switched it to .5hrs. That means the working time for the first task is 30 minutes instead of 4hrs (which is half of the work day).
Thank you this is a really useful video, covering all the basics in a patient and well timed manner - just one question worth covering, why do certain cells turn light blue?
I think it turns blue when you change one cell and it alters others. So if you change a date/time frame on one task, and it is the predecessor to another task, the task that it will affect will be highlighted blue.
Mohd Faizal The project information is just a guess, it is not based on reality. The purpose of this tutorial is to show how to use the software. You will need to ask the installer or get the information from past projects.
Dear Amir , Millon of thanks for a wonderful effort. I am working on a project having above 1300 hundred activities. I have decided to put all data into this Software to track and manage my Project. This projects deal procurement with a large high quality furniture, fixtures and interior items around the globe. It is almost 70 % done.Could you please guide me regarding cost and expenses .
+Anser Awan In the next video I think I talk about adding costs and expenses. I don't use Microsoft Project much, in fact have not used it since I made the videos.
could you explain to me, what if i already done planning the project that start at april 1st. let's say, i want to change the first day into august 1st, and i want the rest can follow. how to change the whole plan like that? so i do't have to start all over again. thanks anyway.
+gorby dewandono I have not used MS Project since making this video, but I think if you want to Project Information; you can change the Start Date, which should make changes to the project.
Vanessa Klinger Hi Vannesa, I don't consider myself an expert in Project management, my goal was to help people get familiar with the software in a short duration. If you look in the description, you will see a link to Notes, if not here is the link simpletek.ca/tutorials/project-2010/ The idea with Finish to Start is that the previous task has to finish before the next task can start, so you have to think whether this task meets this criteria. Sometimes the 2nd task can start, whether the first task is completed or not. I hope this helps.
Hi Amir. Im nurul. I have several questions 1) Why my duration of a project didn't change even though I have assign resources for that particular task? 2) How to assign a group of people in resources sheet? Thanks
1. would depend on how the Task Type is set up. If you double click any of the Task and go to Advanced, look for Task Type (choose Fixed Work), which in effect makes it Effect Driven. 2. Each task gets a Resource allocated, not sure if you can Assign a Group to a Task. Unless the Name of your Resource if the Group.
Hi Amir. Great Tutorial. I need help figuring out STATUS. All my task status's show as ON SCHEDULE, even though the finish date is close to approaching. Only when I mark a task as 100% complete does the status change. Is there no way of the status changing when the Finish date is either over or close to the end?
Hi Deepanjali, sometimes you may have an end date but the Task is not really complete. So this way you can ask the person in charge and put 85% or something and a Project Manager will check with the person to make sure that the Task is 85% complete and not 50%. If the Task set itself to 100% automatically you will not be able to know which Tasks need to be paid more attention. I will look into this and get back to you if I find any other info. Maybe someone else reading this may leave a comment too.
Yes. However I have tasks which have a completion date at June 6. Ideally the status should show as "late" or "delayed" right? But it still shows an "on schedule". I'm very confused with the Status function :(
Looks like you are not alone. A lot of people ignore the Status and create a custom calculation with conditional formatting to get indication about the projects. check out this link blog.practicingitpm.com/2013/08/25/improved-calculated-status-indicator-ms-project/
Amir Parmar Hey! This is fantastic. My project sheet is looking better and better everyday. I must tell you that this is the first time I am using this software and with your video tutorials it has made my life really simple. Having said that, I have another concern...Ive been through a few more tutorials on setting reminders/alerts before a task is due. It looks like I am unable to do so since I have MS Project 2010 and MS Outlook 2007. Do you have a solution to this? Or do you think I should just go ahead and get MS Outlook 2010?
Good that worked out. Again looks like you are not alone with your issue with Outlook :) here is a thread i found on LinkedIn and a link to an option of adding them via Excel. www.linkedin.com/groups/How-add-project-tasks-MS-25618.S.139807029 www.applepark.co.uk/exporting-tasks-from-project-into-your-outlook-calendar/
+Arvind Provinchandra technically speaking you are not supposed to download the videos. you can come back and watch it online whenever you need it. If you have some special reason to download, you can find some options online, however be careful, as those websites can also give you viruses if you are not careful.
Vanessa Klinger not sure if I understand your question correctly. WBS seems to be a different topic. But when you start with your tasks, you are starting your planning and later you will add Resources. And you will be able to create Reports.
Hi, I am not sure if there is a way to import WBS info in MS Project. I did not know much about WBS but in my research found that "A WBS is neither a project plan, a schedule, nor a chronological listing. It specifies what will be done, not how or when." I will see if there is anything else I find on this topic.
Thanks for the response Amir. A WBS (Work breakdown structure) specifies the deliverables of a particular project. Am organizational chart is is the most common way to represent the WBS. In Project Management, the WBS is very important to determine the scope of the whole project and to understand the deliverables in every single level. I understand that in MS Project every task must have a code and according to that code the WBS is built. What I am not sure is if is there a way to get the WBS chart directly from MS Project. There are programs such as WBS Chart Pro or WBS schedule that can help a lot with that.
I think you know more about this than me :) as I don't use Microsoft Project. But from my limited knowledge there is no in-built tool in Microsoft to import WBS. You will need to use WBS chart pro or other software.
This one is by far the best video on MS Projects that i've seen. Thank you Amir.

so for the tasks column, we must write the verb in the active form? although the chores have been accomplished
TheHonchoOfAllSpearheads not sure if it matters. the task is completed when you mark as "complete"
very good explanation thank you :)
I have some question. how do you know 800 tiles can be finish by tiles installer by 3 days? Is there any production rate or something?

So. Finish to start is mostly used when you have multiple resources completing various tasks within the same phase?
Vanessa Klinger Hi Vannesa, I don't consider myself an expert in Project management, my goal was to help people get familiar with the software in a short duration. nice work !!!
Great, Thanks.
1eday is 1 ELAPSED Day not 1 Estimated Day.
This would make the task ignore your calendar and schedule the work over non-working times.
Thanks for the correction; I have made a note at 12:15 to tell people about the correction.
Amir Parmar
You have taught me enough I guess I owed you one.
Probably the only one I will ever get.
good work
Thanks a lot!
