    i went to university and did not get my head around spreadsheet, today i beleive teaching is a talent not everyone can teach but this gentleman has figured it all out, after 15 years of not knowing how spreadsheet works i know understood the basics of spreadsheet under 10 mins ....what a pure talent thank you.

    I've been using spreadsheets on computers since VisiCalc came out, but I still learned something from this video. I didn't know that the newer spreadsheets had the ability to copy a formula by dragging the cell into a range! Thank you, Chris.

    Great teacher, a total newcomer to spreadsheets but this tutorial was reassuring and fairly easy to understand, ill probably watch it a few times to digest everything but well done the instructor.

    Ahhhh, good subject! The first use of computers I can remember (back in my Basic Program Language days) was to create and use spread sheets. You can imagine how excited I was when Ami Pro came out and using Lotus 123! I think even more of a memory was creating when I made my first spread sheet in computer lab (where we were assigned time slots and usage caps). I somehow created a endless loop and walked away without signing out! I had to explain to my class instructor why I was out of time after just one assignment!? In those days, I feared I would never make it through college. I did and there is the story.
    Thanks Chris for all you do!

    Going through one "teacher" after the next, I've come across some horror situations, tiny unreadable spreadsheets, rattling off explanations impossible to keep up with, sudden clicks doing commands without any explanation as to how, and on it goes! After all that.... YOU"RE THE BEST! Thank you!

    Years ago, I taught CLAIT (before it moved to the "Euro IT Passport") to a specific market of Adults and got a 99%+ pass rate for my students.
    Chris, I think you've knocked the spots totally off another well-known, expensive course provider for how you explain spreadsheets - both in terms of content and production quality.
    Even though I know how to use the Office Suite, it's great to have a refresher. Not only do I look forward to more, but also to the image manipulation programs also.
    Thanks for another episode - I wish you a fantastic week!

    One powerful argument in favor of the claim that spreadsheets are a superset of software is their unmatched level of versatility. Unlike most software programs limited to specific functions, spreadsheets offer a boundless canvas for data manipulation and problem-solving. They act as a universal toolkit, allowing users to tackle diverse tasks from simple calculations to complex financial modeling, statistical analysis, and even basic programming through formulas. This vast range of functionalities, adaptable to user needs and imagination, sets spreadsheets apart and potentially positions them as a more versatile "meta-software" encompassing the capabilities of multiple specialized programs.
    While acknowledging limitations in technical depth and scalability, this argument highlights the unique flexibility and power of spreadsheets as versatile tools for exploring, manipulating, and making sense of data in an open-ended way.

    Thanks for taking the time to explain the simple stuff to us beginners. Can I ask how you were able to let spreadsheets title read over the 3 cells?

    • @ExplainingComputers
      @ExplainingComputers  Рік тому +2

      Left (default) justified text in a spreadsheet cell will always flow to display across the adjacent cells -- as with the title here -- provided that the cells to its right are empty. And that really means empty, not containing a space or anything. So if, eg, your heading is being trunctated by its neighbours, go to those cells and press delete to make sure there is nothing in them.
      Related, you can also select a number of cells and, right click, and select "Merge cells". You can then format them as one cell. :)

      +Skelpolu Many thanks for this. I wondered what people would make of these spreadsheet videos. The second will post next week, and in it things get more complex. But I had to start with the basics. A third video is also recorded, but I will go back to hardware or something like that for a week or two between the second and third. Whether I do more spreadsheet videos after number 3 will depend on the views and feedback the first videos get. I spent over 20 years teaching spreadsheets, so it seemed a good idea to give a series of videos a try! :)

    • @ExplainingComputers
      @ExplainingComputers  8 років тому +6

      +Dark Defender If the spreadsheet tutorials go well, certainly I will move to other software. This video and the one for next week (where the spreadsheet stuff gets harder) are very much an experiment. Databases would be a very obvious thing to progress to, and like spreadsheets I taught them for years. But I may also go into other software -- eg imaging editing (a GIMP series, perhaps), video editing, compositing and motion graphics -- maybe even coding in HTML and CSS.

      How does a spreadsheet differ from a database? I'm talking of relational databases... typically the SQL interfaced type. Both spreadsheets and databases hold data in columns and rows. How do they differ?

    • @ExplainingComputers
      @ExplainingComputers  8 років тому +9

      +Inaflap Both spreadsheets and databases store data in tables. But databases are more powerful when it comes to manipulating data as they can perform operations that link many tables together -- most databases being "relational" -- indicating that they can link one table to another, often via the use of queries created by the user. The primary means of data entry into a database is a form -- a screen that the user creates to put in individual records (a record being the equivalent of one row in a spreadsheet). Most of the time, database data is presented in forms or reports -- not as the basic table. Whereas in a spreadsheet, pretty much all data entry and presentation is done with the table itself.
      I think you have convinced me that I need to do a database series! It is a fairly long time since I taught this stuff, but it is all coming back, and it could make some great videos. :)
      But before that we need to cover spreadsheets properly -- as they do contain some fairly powerful data manipulation facilities.
