DJI O3 Air Unit - Maiden Flight - TANQ DEADCAT FRAME - No Frame or Props in View

  • I finally got my hands on my own DJI O3 setup, and have been able to finish designing and prototyping my new Tanq Frame to fit the system. Here is my maiden flights with the Tanq DeadCat Frame and new TPU Camera Mount, specifically designed to keep the props and frame out of view of the DJI O3 Camera.
This is just some onboard recording footage from the O3 air unit to show what it is capable of. The idea is that you should be able to fly without a GoPro and take advantage of the high quality onboard 4k Recording capabilities and built in stabilization options.
You should be able to see the quad shaking in straight flight, because this quad is not tuned, yet. It is on stock tune, and has some vibrations from bent motor bells. Hopefully, this will help you see how rock steady handles the shaking as I cross over the soccer field, flying straight.

This is an awesome idea to be able to convert this frame from x to deadcat. I have one concern about motor protection on the front arms of the deadcat version. It seems the the arms are almost 90 degrees to forward flight which would mean the carbon spurs on the arms are not going to do much in a frontal crash. Maybe the arms could have a 30-45 degree bend before the motors or a second spur projecting forward like the AOS 5. Great work on a fantastic frame:)

Hey buddy. Thanks for the interest. I have moved away from this design, because it was not very durable. I have a new design that I’m working on, and I think it is much better and is definitely much more durable. It also has zero drawbacks to flight characteristics. I will have some video of it soon. Definitely keep an eye out for it.

I definitely like the idea of using a super beefy frame like the Tanq with the O3 and not worrying about the extra frame weight because you no longer are carrying a heavy action camera. Plus you don't need to worry about damaging an expensive action camera. Dead cat design so no props in view. Very appealing! The Tanq has definitely moved to the top of my list for next frame to get. 😀
I did notice the shakiness in straight flight and was disappointed when I first saw it, but then I read the full description and saw your explanation so glad there was good reason for it. Definitely interested in seeing some footage with some fresh motors installed!

Yeah. ThanQs Dave. I was in a hurry, so I pulled components off of a used quad.
I will do it again with some fresh motors.

Do you have issues with vibration or jello when using the o3, with either the GoPro conversion camera mount 3d print, or the normal o3 tpu print? I used the skyliner MK3 with the o3 in the past, and I have had lots of jello issues, so I was just wondering if this frame might have similar problems as well.

The thumbnail is a prototype - I still modding and changing the arms with carbon I bought on Amazon (they don’t have 8mm, 😂)

Unfortunately, this version turned out to not be durable enough for me to satisfy the name TanQ.
I have a 3d print that achieves same goal of keeping props and frame out of view, but maintains the same, if not better flight performance as the original tanQ. Look on thingiverse.com/letsflyrc and find the long neck design.
The 3d print is insanely durable, and doesn’t modify the current frame.
I will have a 7/8” version coming soon with deadcat style, in which it isn’t as necessary to be a basher, and the durability will be sufficient.

There is a better, more durable (props out of view) solution on my thingiverse page in a 3d print. This (deadcat) design turned out to not be as durable as I would expect from the name tanQ. The original tanQ is still a beast, but, the dead cat put components too far out in front, and the aluminum took all the hits, but, wouldn’t continue to take hits over and over.

  • @NguyenerVideos

Hi there! Was about to pull the trigger on the Tanq but had a few questions. 1. With a DJI O3 Air unit, is the antenna able to be kept close to the frame to protect from rear impacts like with other antennas? 2. I saw that this deadcat configuration wasn't durable enough so you made a 3d printed part to move the camera of the O3 Air unit forward to get the props out of view. Does the metal cage still protect the camera in this configuration? Any pictures or videos of the build in this configuration? Thanks!
