B-25's equipped with 3 .50 cal machine guns in each wing; 8 in the nose; and 500 pound bombs were used toward the end of the war to skip bomb Japanese ships. That's 14 .50's keeping the decks under fire, and a big bomb to skip into the side of the ship. Best against Japanese cargo or transport ships. The 75 cannon was concentric recoil, as used in the M-24 Chaffee light tank at the end of the war. It really softened the recoil.
in each wing?? Didn't know that. Usually 8 in the nose, 2 in each side then 2 more from the top turret gunner behind the pilot for 14 forward firing 50's
Boy, flying and fighting the aircraft is just part of the mission...the rest of squadron has so much to do... also, the headaches the Engineering officers and the ground crews had just to keep them up...learned a lot... Thanks!
There is definitely something “not normal” crossing the sky at 3:07! It does not look like a film splotch like in so many 16 mm film shorts or an aircraft (though it may be?). it is moving too smoothly and appears to be in that sky, not added or doctored. What is it???
If you're assuming that 'something' is more distant, its speed looks incredible. Try looking at it like a gull that's relatively close, then the speed becomes less striking. That, or it's a weather balloon ;-)
Are you watching on a broadband connection? Try changing the picture quality setting to 480p. It's in the little geared wheel at the lower right corner of the UA-cam player screen .Also, all these films were shot on 16mm film, not 35mm, using unsophisticated combat cameras, not in HD. :-)
The loses in these groups were horrendous. Anyone really interested should read "Warpath Across the Pacific" by Lawrence J. Hickey. I think Steve S meant to refer to the 75mm cannon.
Beautiful plane! We have a family member who was a photographer, crew engineer and gunner on one. He's still on it. Sgt. Rober Rogers - MIA 12/26/1944 off Mindoro PI
Nope, the real ancestor was the German Stuka with twin 37mm cannon. In fact the A-10 was designed with input from the legendary Stuka Pilot Hans Ulrich Rudel. Read his book ‘Stuka Pilot’. It’s one helluva read.
Interesting. Never realized the firing effect of massed .50s in the B-25s nose put so much stress on the structure. I have heard that pilots of Mitchells equipped with 7mm guns would swear their forward motion was actually stopped for an instant.
What was it? The Mosquito would slow down my 8 MPH when firing her guns and polishing to skin would i crease thr dpeed by 8 MPH. It was said at the sametime but that was my inference.
U.S. Army Air Corps term for a strange unknown flying object (UFO), circa 1040s. When we saw them back in WWII, we thought the Germans had high tech aircraft, when they saw them, they thought we had high tech aircraft. Today, we no neither side had them, but the foo fighters were still there -- unexplained flying around the combat aircraft.

What is the white dot/light thing that appear 3/4 up the screen at about time 3:06 ? it flies across the screen!
Thanks to Paul "Pappy" Gunn and his field mods to the B-25's !
That's right, my Dad flew a field-modified B25 Mitchell for the 5th USAAF, 38th BG (The "Sunsetters"), 71st Sqd ("Wolfpack") in New Guinea.

what is that at 3:07 streaking across the sky ?
Foo Fighter : )
clefmmann65, looked like it came in from another dimension. Definitely was not of this earth
Inter-dimensional sea gull.

Sun glinting off a fuselage on a fighter I suspect.....but we will never know.
Mac K , for sure not a film problem
Mac K definitely something from another world. No vehicles that fast in 1943

Thanks definitely something moving at a high rate of speed.

Good job ZENO, keep up the good work by keeping the American history in war & peace alive!

I got my first B-25 at 10 years old, I think it was made by Ravell.
it looks like the bomb BOUNCED over the ship at 11:25
might have been a dud because it didn't explode on either the bounce or the landing.
I wonder if this is the ancestor of the A-10.

I like the commentary & the commentary interruption.

My father had over 100 missions in the Mitchel and he also swore that his plane seemed to slow noticeably when the 75mm cannon was fired!
the stories from my father, he flew with 413th , had 48 missions oll over that area, he told me lots of stores, but only after i beat it out of him.ll
Focus varies from poor to slightly blurry
These films are 75 years old and were probably not stored as well as could be.
>>-------------------> Best no-b.s. WWII video I've seen in a while. Bonus was the foo-fighter at mark 3:07.
I'm not sure what a foo-fighter is, can you explain, thanks.

"Is it a bird? Is it a plane?"
"Yeah, it's a bird."
I'm surprised they didn't use a water spray system for the airfield to keep the dust down.
Great vid.
Thank the Aussies for showing the best use of B-25
LOOKS LIKE THEY DID THE IMPOSSIBLE WITH THE B25.............. I"AM SURE A LOT OF THOSE MEN LOST THERE LIVES......FOR MY FREEDOM.......
fleetfoot27 Now the filthy Leftists are trying to destroy the US. Kill them all.
