Dopamine Nation by Anna Lembke is a good one to add to the list. She talks - in simple language - about what happens to our brains when we overload them with dopamine with things like alcohol. My top picks for so er books are: Quit Like a Woman This Naked Mind Dopamine Nation Been sober now for 9 months. Never slept better!
Starting again. This time last year I was filled with hangziety after heavy day drinking and remember thinking what does alcohol even bring to my life. I went through periods of abstinence and have significantly cut down since last year but do always feel anxious after drinking even if I just had two drinks. A year later im asking the same. What does alcohol bring to my life? Day 2 sober
Unexpected joy of being sober is literally life changing. Such a good book and I agree Catherine has a way with words. I've just ordered Quit like a woman by Holly Whitaker which seems a popular choice too and will hopefully help further x
I have read the sober diaries as well as Catherine Gray's books. I loved Catherine’s books, especially the unexpected joy of being sober. I have read both of your books too. You bring so much to this community. It's appreciated more than you know, so thank you 💙😊
I decided to take a 3 month break when I was 55. Three and a half years on and I haven’t look back and the benefits just keep on coming. My favourite book was Quit Like Girl by Holly Whitaker followed closely by the Unexpected Joy of Being Sober.
Have read 3 of those books, plus This Naked Mind by Annie Grace - basically how we've been conditioned by society and those in the marketing of alcohol to think alcohol is a good thing. Also William Porter Alcohol Explained, how alcohol affects every aspect of your body and mind. I love The Chimp Paradox - just got Prof. Peters book A Path through the Jungle which I haven't read yet. These videos are going to be so helpful - Dry January is a few days away and hopefully many can go beyond it x
Hey doctor...just now started reading your book "A better day" ...no doubt it's wonderful...now thinking next is the chimp paradox...as your vedios are always inspiring... thank you ❤️
I’ve read a few of the recommended books but also Quit Like A Woman by Holly Whitaker. It may be titled Quit Like A Woman but it’s brilliant for anyone interested in the marketing of alcohol and how it’s manipulated society (lots of which is aimed at women). Also how AA and the term alcoholic can be so dangerous for our mental health. Some of the stats in this book blew my mind! Your videos are great - keep them coming! 🫶
'Kick the drink easily' by Jason Vale is an amazing read! This just busts every myth and excuse for taking a drink. It really gives a whole new perspective on drinking culture that society has immersed themselves in. Helped me no end make the decision that it really is poison and totally unnecessary to be a part of your life if that is your personal preference. 2 yrs booze free and best thing i ever did! Defo recommend!
I read the sober diaries twice and Catherine Greys book as well, I do drink but wanted to be more mindful and cut down a bit and these were very helpful, thank you for these videos Alex they are helpful and I hope you had a good Xmas x
I’ve been an on and off drinker for a while and I’ve even had years of sobriety. I have to say it’s a nice way to live! Starting another alcohol free stint at the moment. I try not to put a set time on it- it takes away the feeling of failure if you do have a drink 😁
When trying to quit or cut down on drinking it is useful to learn the truth about alcohol. Someone mentioned Annie Grace, and her book This Naked Mind, which is great for this and also William Porter’s Alcohol Explained. When you know what it really does to your body and brain, you can’t un know it, and this really helps with mindset. You then don’t get so much FOMO only JOMO (the joy of missing out) 😊
I went sober at 30 and it was the best decision ever for me. However, I do sometimes find it lonely now as I feel like I can’t relate to a lot of people and I often fear people might think I’m boring.
Being sober is far from being boring, it is being free! Embrace it and feel proud of yourself, hangover free and clear headed. Wasting days of your life feeling like crap is boring lol
Alcohol Explained by William Porter is a must read for anyone who wants to understand the science behind what alcohol does to our brain and how and why people develop alcohol dependancy!
Did you read any book where somebody described their experiences with ADHD? I read one at the university and that could be very interesting to you, I do not have anything to recommend with alcohol but I read one about drug addiction and it was said because girl described all bad situations that happened to her, I would have to check the names of those books if somebody is interested
I hope you enjoy the video, leave your suggestions in the comments below ❤
