- Amid speculation that a picture of Kate Middleton and her children has been 'manipulated', Tom Swarbrick speaks to a royal correspondent, a technology expert and a PR advisor, to get their thoughts.
The photo, posted on Mother's Day, was the first of the Princess of Wales to be released since her surgery in January.
However, Getty Images, Reuters and Associated Press are among those to have pulled the photo, citing an 'inconsistency' with the alignment of Princess Charlotte's left hand.
So far, Kensington Palace are yet to comment.

As a graphic designer, I edit designs all the time. However, the editing of this photo was obviously done by a rank amateur.

I think this picture was pushed out in the hope of quelling the media frenzy around her not being seen in public. I think her condition whatever that is, maybe much worse than we are being sold. That being said, they are hiding something and the public are being manipulated.

It actually was blamed on H%M by one 'Royal Expert' , Angela Levin, who is eating her words today. She said 'it seemed like a prank that may have come from LA'. She should be fired! And Kate has apparently now admitted to doing this herself. What possible reason would they need to massively manipulate an entire photo including chunks of the background with what is clearly AI? This is not even close to just being a real person touching up a few skin blotches or a bit of bad hair...

But Stalin for example had a significant number of pictures altered to remove people or add himself to create a narrative that wasn't intended when the picture was taken etc... In that case it is kind of something perhaps worth caring about.

The issue is they were not able to submit proofs to the media when asked. Even if the photo was manipulated, they should be able to submit the original.

Well, I'd have posted it. I'm an editor, off at the weekend - if I'd seen that sent in, filling one small part of the screen window, downloaded from PA or whoever, I wouldn't have seen the hand error, at a few pixels high on my screen. In a shocking twist, you don't pore over every single image you're sent, when you've a hundred things to get through. Most newsrooms would have seen the pic, and 5 seconds or less later, would have been clicking away from it for the embedded file caption and copyright credit - not zoomed in at 1:1 per-pixel scale, where you'd probably at that stage have seen the error. Hardly a mystery, or a conspiracy.

I hate to have to chip in because I usually try to keep my exposure to the 'royal' family and conspiracy theories to a minimum but I am a photographer, so might have something to contribute - This type of ghosting artifact might have happened as a result of automatic compositing done by the device used to take the shot (movement between the shots can cause this). More likely though is that someone was just trying to get a shot with everyone looking in the right direction with normal lookings poses (hands & feet looking weird can often throw a photo off) and just did a bit of a rush job. This kind of touching up happens all the time, especially with portraits, wedding shots and the like. They very likely did it as a matter of course without thinking twice and have managed to create a news story out of it.
That makes a lot of sense
Judging by artifical green of the grass in the foreground and the frosty grass in the background, not to mention the browning deciduous plant on the wall, this photo is months old. And that's the least disturbing thing about it. Who even goes around with their ring and middle fingers crossed? It's awkward, painful and uncomfortable and unlikely three kids would achieve such a pose while laughing in a relaxed manner.
If you zoom in on princess Charlotte's left hand, it looks like her hand is outside the sweater sleeve a bit

All the information about the image can be had from the file. All the pixels can be looked at too.
I have a great deal of experience with generating AI images and I know what to look out for to determine if an image is a true photo or one generated by AI. There are several details in that "photo" which reveal that it is entirely an AI-generated image. The major and most frequent flaw of AI-generated images of people is in hands and especially fingers. Note that in that "photo" of Kate and her children, prince Louis' right hand fingers are quite distorted and unnatural. Also, how many people do you know whose little fingers dare longer than their index fingers? In that "photo", Kate's left hand shows a slightly longer little finger than her index finger. There are other details but I won't go into them, the ones I have outlined above are amply sufficient to demonstrate that this "photo" is an AI-generated picture.

I think it was smart of her to remove her ring before surgery because anyone could steal that ring right off her finger. However, it is very clear that was an old photo that was photoshopped, or it was an airbrushed photo. I believe Kate had cosmetic surgery to look younger.
I don't understand why Kate would allow a fake photo of herself to be used when she knows we know what she really looks like. People have taken photos and videos of her without any enhancements and uploaded them onto their social media accounts.
So, she knows that we all know she was showing signs of aging because people have made videos about it. Having surgery and hiding from the public that pays her salary means to me that she had cosmetic surgery and didn't want anyone to know about it.
However, we will know because we have already seen her wrinkles, the sagging of her skin, and the damage her botox injections did to one of her eyebrows. Most celebrities who have cosmetic surgery and allow it to be televised share the same recovery timeline with the timeline of Kate's announced recovery, which they said would be around Easter.
The Royal family and its staff needs to stop lying. It is an embarrassment and a disgrace to Queen Elizabeth II's legacy. Queen Elizabeth never lied to the public. She was a honest woman of great integrity! I miss her so much!

Given that this is a marketing photo, the Kensington Palace should just publish the photo on social media and ignore the agencies. It is up to the agencies to publish on their organization.
