You inspired me with your last year video to go clipless and I never looked back. You explained it so well. It made such a difference and 2019 was my best year in cycling. Thank you!

Thank you for taking the time to leave such a lovely comment it was a great start to my day. This is the reason I make these videos and knowing they do help out or inspire people to get out and try cycling or try something new on their bikes is what motivates me to keep making them. 😀🙏

I've been riding for almost one year and everyone in my cycling group uses clipless pedals. It's been on my to-do list forever but I get so frightened of falling haha! I should go for it....i have so much more time to sort it out now.

    • @MrsMilaCamila

grow.with.bintou I know exactly how you feel. I was petrified to go clipless. But after previous Michelle’s video on the same subject I watched last year I just did it. I could not believe how easy and smooth the transition was. I did fall once, stationary on a day one 🤣 🙈. Go for it!

It's a big step. The main thing is to build up your confidence then before you know it you'll be trying to unclip on bikes when you are wearing normal shoes.

@@MrsMilaCamila gotta get that one fall out of the way. It's more embarrassing than anything. I've watched an expro racer fall over while clipped in so it can happen to the best of us.

Thanks for your videos. Another great video.
Regarding the power transfer between SPD and SPD SL, it is not necessarily about power transfer. As you said, power is power and, transferred through SPD or SL, it will transfer. The difference is more about the size of the point of contact. At equal force, the smaller the point of contact, the higher the concentration of constraint. It means that smaller cleats with smaller pedals (you however use the M530 and they are quite large) means the constraint on the foot is very localised and on longer ride, you can feel pain on this area specifically. The larger SL cleats spreads the load more and avoid (or reduce) this effect. I am not an expert, but from what I gathered from cyclist (and local bike shop), it seams to be the main difference. I hope this helps :)

Great content, also not only for beginners. I first used SPD-SL for my first road bike, because that was what you "are supposed to do". Later on I got SPD for all my bikes - for a lot of the reasons you mention: easy to walk in, double-sided pedals, no real drawbacks what I see. I did not know of the different types of SPD cleats, thanks for that :)

I just bought a 3 wheel trike (SunSeeker EZ tadpole), trying to get back into the sport.
I had the kind man at the bike shop put those baskets on the trike, but they are totally useless.
Two days later, I had him switch for clipless, (2 bolts, mountain style).
    All good now.
Frankly, without clipless pedals, that bike is nearly useless for what I need.
    I really like this blog.
Saw your black cat in an older vid.
I hope he is doing well.

There so much to cover on the subject, hard to squeeze it all in and keep it short. My husband tried clipless on the Brompton but when I switched the pedals back to use it he's not bothered to put them back on, you lose the folding pedal if you change them.

The main reason for Look style road pedals is, firstly they were the first design after clips and straps and originated from ski bindings and secondly, they are a much bigger platform when you are racing and pushing really hard on the pedals. Many pro riders likened riding SPD's to having walnuts in their shoes. Shimano developed their road cleats many years after their SPD's because road riders didn't like them.

@@OneLessCar No problem. I started out a long time ago with clips and straps and progressed to the original look pedals when I used to time trial. I did try SPD's when I got my first MTB but never really got on with them. I still use look road pedals on one bike, but I much prefer Time Atac for their easy engagement and release. People seem to ignore them as an option, but I like them.

This is so funny. I was just watching your similar video from two years ago when I checked your channel and saw this newest upload! Thank you so much. My husband and I have bikes being shipped. • @OneLessCar

It's a popular topic cycling shoes and cleats, which is why I thought I'd update the video. Hopefully between the 2 everyone can find out what they need 😀 Sounds like exciting times for you and your husband, 2 new bikes!!! As for the flat pedals I would just make sure they are sturdy metal constrution (pins and platform) for the best grip. Also the pins are hight adjustable when you turn them, something I found out after I'd had mine for years.

Walking around in SPD SL... as soon as you start mincing over the floor all the coolness leaks out... :) I use the SL style on my fixed gear as the 3 bolts give better security for speed control otherwise it's SPD's all the way.

    • @OneLessCar

That's interesting about the SL's being better for your fixed gear riding. It's all about fining the right combination for the right bike/ride.

I can't think of anything worse than being hand - foot-cuffed to the pedals..except on wet, slippery days, and even then...? But as I am more the Sunday Giro pedalist, the foot-cuff is not so attractive. The search for a functional, attractive, affordable bicycle shoes continues. Maybe I will look again at what you have presented here.

I wear Five Ten Freerider High & Freerider EPS High, with Pedaling Innovations catalyst pedals.
I have in depth reviews of these shoes on my website:
Five Ten Freerider High, which is the summer shoes wp.me/p60aTF-2p1
    Freerider EPS wp.me/p60aTF-1Nd
but I am interested in the new shoes Trailcross Mid Pro they have protective pads for ankles and have a gaiter so rocks won't come in the shoes. they are more breathable than Freerider.
and a GTX(Goretex) should come this month(august 2020) but that might be delayed due to corona virus, Adidas is sld out of the Trailcross Mid Pro shoes, all shops I looked at are too.
These shoes are a mix of hiking shoe and a mountainbike shoe, to give you good shoe for wearing up and down technical terrain, that is impossible to ride up or down.
