2013's "Her" vs. 1989's "Deeper Understanding" by Kate Bush

  • The new Spike Jonze film starring Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams and Scarlett Johansson follows a lonely man who enters into a relationship with a very human computer program...a scenario that also intrigued Kate Bush, who very presciently created a gorgeous song about it 24 years ago.
Although there have been a few entries into the 'computer romance' genre ("The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes" and "Making Mr. Right" for two), Kate's song took the idea in frightening direction, where the programmed empathy and interaction actually became dangerous to its human counterpart. Was the angelic voice a self-aware entity that had developed emotion...or just a complex algorithm doing what it was designed to do? Of course, since 1989, we've seen the proliferation of the internet, social media and (most recently) voice recognition. This is a story that's still ahead of its time even now...but not by much.
Bush revisited the song again in 2011 on her album "Director's Cut," but I used the 1989 original because the angelic voices that accompany the computer's voice in the song are warmer and more comforting than the electronic voice with which she later replaced them. The warmth simply worked better with this trailer and storyline.

This song is exactly what I thought of as I watched the promo. I was going to listen to the song and found this. Excellent job and putting the two together.

Nice mashup. BTW, the haunting backing vocals are by the Trio Bulgarka (plus from Kate multitracked, natch.)

Can't help but wonder if Jonze had heard the song, and it planted the seed in his mind? After all, it was definitely there first. :)
