With all the crap going on in the world, THIS brought a smile to my face. Thanks.
Cheers! 🍻
Seconded, 2 strokes are twice as good as 4 strokes :)
Yes
That’s music to my ears.
We should celebrate Rudolf Diesel’s birthday each year as a National holiday.
The good that man did for humanity is incalculable.
Agree!
yeah, Rudolf Diesel Day
Rudolf got fucked over bad though by the petroleum industry. He designed the engine to run from peanut oil or derivatives, and as a result got "disappeared" during a trip aboard an ocean liner. Then it was re-engineered to run on distilled petroleum products.
@@LGTheOneFreeMan I suppose he got peanuts for his trouble
@@LGTheOneFreeMan
Interesting theory.
His death is pretty mysterious.
Simply something you get in Australia most days..the roar of 1st and 2nd generation GM power..sensational!
I agree. Considering here in America you can only hear/see this on a short line or tourist railroad.
@@azrailfan2717 weve got this 50's era ex-state owned stuff running grain etc hundreds of kilometers with operators like SSR in particular. Hell, i work for the major operator here and work trains every day pulled by almost 40 year old EMD's that pretty much havent stopped since they rolled out of the factory im Kelso in 1982... We even still have quite a few old Alco's that are 15-20 years older than that, that are kept for use on branch lines that can't handle the weight of the 81 class. We sure as hell get our moneys worth from these old girls.
Same I remember these gm beasts well pure power in every stroke Melbourne aus love em💪🇦🇺
Agree with that Andrew l love my old fords but I’m big on these old gm beasts real power 💪🇦🇺👍
I wish we had more of this in NSW Hunter Valley instead of the usually modern heavy EMD710s & GE 7FDL16s
I'm a retired engineer this sure does trigger a lot of memories 🙂
Glad it does my friend! It was a random decision to place the camera there and I wasn't sure what I was going to get, but it turned out very well.
Im 54....and still want to do this for a living...but i think i missed my chance.
@@andgate2000 it's not as easy as it looks, and can be tough on the body! Where you from?
I’m still working, but the last of these old EMDs were retired about six years ago and I miss them.
@@brianburns7211 : BSNF
I think that I could sleep to the sound of these trains. These trains are like a friend.
We often do sleep to them 😴❤️
proves that progress is not always what it's cracked up to be.
Im a young fella and seeing and hearing these old iron monsters makes me wish I was alive to see them brand new.
This video is a true gem. My gosh, I could listen to this for hours. To think this sound used to be heard every day here in the States. It's easy to imagine six Santa Fe GP7s with a long string of empty refers headed up Cajon bound for loading in the San Joaquin Valley. Sincere thanks for putting the effort in to recording this. Fantastic!
Glad you enjoyed it. Can definitely do more, these are easy to make. Set the camera up, record and simple edits.
Could listen to this all day.
Nice seeing this old beauty passing a scrap yard with cars which probably had just a quarter of the age when getting scrapped, hope she never gets scrapped.
It wont... SSR spend dollars on getring and keeping these things on the mainline. Its pretty much a gunzel-run railway here. 😂
@@schmoburger6086 +1 to you, good sir, for teaching me the word "gunzel". How I've gotten this far in life without hearing it I have no idea, but that has now been fixed.
If your missus asks you what all the noise is, tell her it's not noise - it's *MUSIC!*
Since it’s a 2 stroke her crank runs on tool steel m50nil vin var roller bearing steel cnc machined
Crank is on journal bearings. I've replaced them before.
Stafford Magnus, best comment ever, cheers mate.
Women like to make noise especially when your enjoying a UA-cam video.
Amen to that!!
I ran mostly older EMD's in my 12 year career on the RR. This definitely brings back the memories!
What a beauty! Thanks!
A wonderful sound you rarely hear anymore. When I was a small boy, my Dad took me to Chicago where EMD had an office (Michigan Avenue?) with a cutaway of a 567 diesel. It was motorized so you could see all the parts moving; it was extremely fascinating to me (and to Dad). Amazing I still remember this (more than 70 years ago). This was in the late 1940s when railroads were rapidly retiring steam for diesels.
I dont know if its the same one or another made later, but here in australia there was a cutaway 567 at the rail museum in newport victoria, i cant remember if it was powered or not though, i last saw it in 2008.
Yeah I recall that, but haven't seen it in years.
@@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER is the museum still open? Last time i went it seemed like the staff were not interested in much, i had plenty of free time on my hands back then, asked if they needed a volunteer whos good with mechanical things, just got a straight up stern no 🤣 so i went home and havent been back
@@Colt45hatchback it is but it's been sad watching everything wither away in the weather..
@@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER i can imagine, i take it its still delapidated, or probably moreso nowdays i guess. Its unfortunate.
I know it's policy incorrect, but I love to see the diesel smoke.
I believe they can tune or modify the engine to eliminate that smoke...
Emd 2 strokes generally don't smoke real hard, alcos however... Well..
Nothing wrong with carbon smoke
@@cardboardboxification nothing wrong but those failed lawyers who populate government always looking for dragons to slay...

After the camera is moved GM27 looks like a monster from the deep with the wide angle shot.

I think that it looks like one of the characters from the Pixar movie, Cars.
Nothing like an classic emd GM sound, can’t beat them we knew what we were doing when we made em!
Sounds like my childhood. I miss that 567 chant.
Man, I could smell the diesel through this video! Love it!
Ahhh, beautiful EMD 567's music.
This is so awesome.
Cheers man!
THIS IS DEFINITELY ONE OF THE BEST UPLOADS ON YOU TUBE. THESE TRAINS ARE REALLY TUFF. EXTREME BRUTE POWER. REMINDS ME OF MY CHILHOOD WAY BACK. BETTER DAYS. NOTHING IS TOUGHER THAN THESE TRAINS. THESE TRAINS SOUND SUPER TUFF!
I love the sound of a two stroke in the morning.
God they sound great. 55 and still stop and watch
Beautiful view, beautiful engine sound. This is it! Regards from Poland
Irish Railways had fleets of 567's and 645's. I'm involved with a group that has some of them preserved. I could listen to them for ever
I used to hear that ALL THE TIME but alot louder....on the Commercial scallop boat (200 ton boat) I worked on her for 16 years and this was 7-15 day trips.
So that was enough time to recognize that EMD anywhere!
The engine was MASSIVE!!!
One of the spookiest looking cabs/noses ever. I don't know why, but the front view of those has always given me a creepy feeling.
Me too. Seeing one round a bend and coming toward you at night with that oscillating headlight has sent chills down my spine many times in the past. We used to walk the railroad while coon hunting in Mississippi when I was in high school. On a crisp clear moon lit winter’s night that locomotive would make the hair stand up on the back of my neck. The sight, sound and smell was somehow terrifying and magic at the same time.
Those were the days.
Looking at the front of the first locomotive shown, reminded me of the view Dennis Weaver had in his mirror from the 1971 movie called Duel. If unknown to you, Google it.
@@richardveazey3457 Ahhh.... Memories!
@@mosfet404 One of my favorite movies. That gloved arm out of the old Peterbilt still gives me shivers.
@@mosfet404 You're absolutely right. That old windshield, that sound, is Haunting.Looks like desert dust covering it. Wicked, killer locomotive Beast. Great video.👌
Brings back the good old days in load test runnong them under full losd taking engine temperatures. Had to wear double ear plugs and still felt that power. Then shut them down and hot torqued all the bolts inside.
And again. That camera angle not only catches the sound but also the smoke. Great job.
Absolutely outstanding ! It was so realistic, I almost burnt my arse on the exhaust .......
This just gets better and better, thanks for your efforts.
Cheers
Glad you enjoyed it. :)
That my frend. is a happy diesel. Hope for many more years . You don't find many like her.
Proper Machines ,and that sound, it goes without saying .May they Live Forever .
What a beautiful sight. A NSW blue sky and the town of many Wagga's. Have a nice day and ciao for now
Cheers!
No old phrase we used some time ago is very applicable here: “Far out!!”
I grew up near the train yard in Nashville Tennessee and you can feel the yard diesel running under your feet. These things are fantastic!
I always called it a “gurgle” sound. Long live 567’s!
Love the sound and that shot from about 5:07 looking down at the GM's nose.
This video is brilliant!
The concept of placing the camera on the unit's roof is a spectacular one..both Aurally & Visually.
Thank you 👌
I used to work on these things back in the 80s
Capturing the smoke on the engines behind is a great touch. I think it gets any better when combined with the sound of the emd! Great video, beautiful countryside.
the 567B or C are one of my favorite engines just for that sound of pure diesel, thank you for posting this
Glad you enjoyed it.
Great stuff, squire!! I don't ever recall seeing this camera position used in any other video I've watched over the past 20+ years. Brilliant!
I must add thanks for getting the Wagga station in the clip.....one of the most beautiful Colonial-period restorations anywhere.
Cheers! Yes I decided to make use of the microphone, next one I'll strap one on and get just the note.
And yes Wagga station and yard still has that real old school nsw rail yard feel. A night shoot with a Tuscan 421 class would be mint, modern but somehow oldschool too
Is this the same line that the gahn runs on? In 2011 I took a trip on the gahn from Alice Springs to Adilade. Quite the trip
Ahhhh.... This is the life of my summer, BTW, This remind me of in the 1950s how my Grandfather saw a ATSF Freight or Passenger traveling through the city's of Pasadena, San Dimas, & Victorville to get to Illinois or something.
That sound sure gets you in 👍
Love seeing these old locos doing their thing. Many fond memories of seeing / hearing them charge over the blue mountains from my youth. What I dont understand is why so many vintage locos are still (or being put back) in service when there are many modern locos mothballed around the country. I think there are still a bunch at Goulburn under tarps for example - EL Class I believe parked at CFCLA.
It’s quite simple Patrick .... all the modern stuff, sound like turbocharged vacuum cleaners, and for any railway company to meet the new government regulated sound quota, they need to use EMD 2 stroke Diesel engines.
The noisier the loco, the quicker the sound quota can be achieved. 😄
This mob tries their best not to hire locos as it eats into profits but sometimes it's the only option
@@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER I liked the government noise quoter story ........ but if you want to go with a rational explanation, that will work too ...... Lol 😆
I live near a RR switching yard so I get to hear similar sounds all night along. I love it.
Last time these were active in my area was 1990, and they were in the way out! Metra was still running F units as they were still reviewing orders for the "new" back then EMD F40 units. Cool thing was they were still painted in a BN Green livery.
I love that our American-like vintage diesels are still in service, unlike America's.
Go to ncry, they have a bunch of GP9S which clag a lot and a GP7 and some others with a 567 in them
I spent 10 years in a grader with a Detroit 2 stroke, nothing like them.
I was a diesel mechanic when Detroit 2 strokes were still being used. They were like Harley Davidson Motorcycles, they always marked their spot. lol You had to be careful and not leave the truck in gear when you went home. They could start up by themselves anytime. GMC dealership I worked at, people came to work the next day and one had started up and ran through the parts department wall.
I bet you’re deaf as a beetle lol jokes
WELL DONE! Memories- 1974
Those EMD 567s have a distinct sound of there own
I've always loved the sound of GM 2-stroke diesels. Whether it's the big EMD's on the rails or the Detroits on the road. I think my favorite is the EMD 16-645-E3. When I was a kid in the 80's these were still pretty common on the main lines. there was a main and a few smaller branch lines close to our house. And late at night it was very common to hear those big engines rumbling about notch-4 with that real low frequency resonation that you could feel in the house. And then you'd hear a few blasts of the horn as they went through the crossings about 1/4 mile away. Would love to get up close to one some day.
Detroit two stroke power long live the king 💪
Ahhh yes, nothing quite like that two stroke symphony.
Sounds from my childhood. EJ&E while still owned by US Steel ran SD 38-2's. Loved listening to them. Now the few that remain are scattered around the CN system, I miss them
Glad you enjoyed it. :)
I drove one once, love it thanks for posting!
Know that sound well , they had a double exhaust ours had a single except for the re-engined metropolitan Vickers locos with the 645 engine , the A had a treble exhaust and the C had a double so a great roar from the C.
I love the sound of the old non turbo emd’s. Great footage mate I could watch this all day
Watching this video, I can almost smell the diesel exhaust. I love trains.
That sound announced the arrival of GP7's into my small boyhood town...thanks for posting!
Cheers, thanks 🍻🍻🍻 love the GP7's!
What an awesome filming location, you must be a conductor. Lucky bastard. We love our trains videos here in Clemson, SC Go Tigers!
Grew up listening to EMD's notching up to head up a long bank near our home, then worked on them later on. Drivers pouring it on too.
Great stuff, mate! Terrific sound, and you had the sun over our shoulder, just as it should be. In the US, I think just about all the running 567s are in museums. The closest we get to that sound are the non-turbo 645s, like the GP-38-2s.
Some GP9s are still in operational switching service in some class 3 railroads, so technically not all is lost
There's a video on the interwebz of a worn-out looking SD7 pushing log cars with a lot of wheelslip
Seen that one!
@@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER nice!

Love that movie. I have it on DVD. 👍🏽
love hearing them really work up that grade from 3:20

This makes me miss the sound of S302 when she used to be on Warrnambool. I lived in east Geelong and on a windy day she used to sound like she was about to come through the front gate as they approached Sth Geelong Station.
It's still running around, it's my favourite S class for that reason! It screams! Got videos of S302 on my UA-cam going into Elphinstone tunnel from the roof.
@@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER Oooh cool :) I shall have a listen :)
The GM Jimmie two stroke diesel is so simple and yet so cool a design.
AWSOME FOOTAGE! Loved it, thank you 😎👍
These are still the best lookin engines
Awesome locomotive and sound! I have one of these engines in my N-scale layout.
Before the electrification of the South Coast Line, NSWGR 421 classes were rostered on as the train engine on late night passenger turns. I would lie in bed hear them chattering away between Allan’s Creek and Unanderra, the sounds carrying on the still night air. They weren’t too popular on that turn. The train would stop at North Wollongong and then lift the train up the 1:100 to Wollongong. You could hear them working hard all around the ‘Gong, waking people from their slumbers. Good times!
Immediately fell in love with this channel because of this video
Cheers! 😊
@@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER 😎🤙🏻Howdy
I used to hear these 567 motors, with two strokes, around the U.S. during my childhood. The next bigger motor still sounded cool, but these older motors have that bass, are tough sounding, and have an attitude, as Stevo, the Crocodile Hunter would say, "Don't muck with me!"
Thank you for sharing this cool video of classic railroading at its finest!
Love the plumes of diesel smoke too!
Then you might like these EMD's working hard up a grade in Maryborough, Victoria, AUST. Dumping traction sand as well.

Two each of these @ 900 HP in every LST produced for WW2. The one of them that brought back LST 325 to US waters, made the trip from UK with a busted cylinder. Looks and sounds like 71 series Detroit Diesels, cause Charles Kettering worked on both at the same time.
Cool sounds, excellent video. Thanks
The 567 B and C , 275 - 835 rpm . 4204 - 567 C 1750 horsepower (1290 kilowatts ) . I worked on 4204 in the early 1990's , maintenance .
You really need to do a live stream of one of your trips bloke. This is brilliant.
Them emd 2 strokes tune m50nil roller bearings nitride and carburized
Yes please do!
Awsome clip. Always been a fan of the old gear. Looks good, sounds angry and love the shots of soot as you notch it up. 👍
Wow , an amazing cam view and sound to match 👍
Great video, awesome audio! Loved the old 567’s.
Love the sound. As the Loco's left town they would be getting a bit of a pounding and on cool clear nights you could hear them whine. And the scent of a Diesel. Never forget driving a short empty fuel train as a 12 or 13 year old watching the brake gauge and speed with sweaty hands for a few klm with my Dad right behind me. Oh the Seventies
That's ace! It's still the 80s here in Australia.. We get all the shit boxes.. But they require love and we give it to them as best we can to keep them going.
A view most will never see . Thank you
Passing through Wagga? That pedestrian bridge is where I first heard and loved the EMD burble of pure power.
I nominate this for "Best Feature Film", "Best Soundtrack", and "Best Supporting Stack of Horns". Most entertaining, thank you. Now, could you please strap that camera on top of an old Alco RS-3 please. PLEASE.
I like the sounds and the camera angles. Great video!
The GM Locomotive is really an electric train that gets it's electricity from a generator that's driven by a big diesel engine!
