      They are part of the European propaganda, and it is irrelevant, even if, they are the worst engines in the world . The idea is this; If it is European then it MUST BE good.

    BMW M54 with paper piston rings? Why not M50 and M52?
    Both engines were made from solid materials, while M54 were made from recycled aluminum
    OG 1.9 tdi 90hp can run on fries oil, same as BMW 2.5 TDS Do you hear that modern engineers? Vegan diesel was already made!

    As an Audi/VW tech I’d thought I’d chime in. You missed the best German engine. The Volkswagen 2.5L 5 cylinder. There are still tons of them on the road after decades.
    Also the Ea888 engines are garbage especially the earlier ones..

    • @SeatsAndWheels

      ahh yes thanks for pointing that out the 2.5L should've been included! The Gen 3 EA888's have been known to be reliable, but yes its specific to which gen

    I can vouch for the BMW M54. I've got an E39 530i , ten years to date with 0 engine issues , smooth, pokey straight 6 with reasonable punch at any rev range.

      @ecavity 4 дні тому +1

      I'm sorry but with the M54 the beancounters already had to much power and influence. Major parts of the engine are made of plastic while it should have been metal. Plastic wears and breaks over time, metal doesn't. Like (for instance) that coolant pipe that is situated underneath the intake manyfold (thus quite hard to replace.... ). That coolant pipe is plastic. Not good. Same for the thermostat housing, also plastic (Easier to replace, but still it is bad.... ) Earlier BMW engines had more metal parts, thats better.

    Oh, yes! The OM603 I had in a 300D W124, its a miracle, grest engine, I love it! But it consumes like 9 liters per 100 km.
    Hmmm, but why the M256 of Mercedes? Its lots of power with little displacement? I would have expected the true hero, the 8 Cylinder M278 with 4.7 litres displacement, which runs smoothly like with less than 10 litres/100 kms or in sports mode like a racing car, at 220 km/h still doing sprint accelerations I have never had in any other engine (and on average I am doing that one still at less than 11 litres per 100 km/h). This M278 (the later one from march 2015 on is the more reliable), powers the S500 Coupé and Sedan (in the US its called the S550). In my example it comes with 9 gears and without 4 Matic which makes it extremely efficient, it takes as little as the 6 cylinder engine in the E400.
    The mentioned OM 648 (320 CDI) was great at its time, took like 8.3 per 100 kms, with not shy at all driving. But would not buy it anymore. So actually I would have expected the OM 642 in this list, that drives almost with the power of an 8 cylinder engine with huge accelerations and st 250 km/h still with reserves. It only takes 6,7 liters in the W213 station wagon and is the most efficient power block I ever had.
    However, thanks for the great video, I loved it! 😊

      Hi Tobias, thanks for sharing your experience! While we work hard to research on primarily the reliability factor, we are a small team who might not have had the privilege of driving and owning the beautiful Mercs you mentioned (it would be a dream!) to truly understand even more nuances like you kindly noted. So we really appreciate it when viewers like yourself like the video and share your stories that come from having first hand experience 😃

    Think German engineering, think about greedyneering and planned obsolescence. The real reliable ones are all old engines from cars you can no longer get. Some like VW EA888 are also limited to certain market areas and are not even that reliable except maybe compared to even worse engines of modern days. Also when these engines don't fail, the gearbox they are connected to is certain to fail.

      162kw and Tiptronic ZF8 will last very, very long. 3 years and 50k km later (bought at 110k km) only needed chain change, thats it. Wonderful combo. But if you like driving fast, better fill up E98.

    • @TechTusiast
      @TechTusiast 3 дні тому

      @@TheRokas9944 I hope it does,, but how do you know it will? So far is likely quite new havinc such low mileage. A typical 90s car did 300K km with normal maintenance unless it was Italian, British or Opel. Good ones did way more.
