Disable steering in all landing gear except the forward gear. That should definetly help stability on take off. If you're not already. Thanks for the videos mate

@@Orb8Ter And disable friction on wheels also helps.
As for your fuel issues, you use close cycle mode too early, you must gain more speed before air intake become useless. Means more level flight at lower altitudes till your craft reach about 1500 m/s. But it depends on the size and weight of your space plane. The heavier it is, the lower the ascend profile is, just the opposite to rockets.

You should actually disable all steering for takeoff, and just use your rudder at high speeds to align on the runway.

You can use service bays and and have your cargo clip through them. That’s what I did and I just attach my cargo to a docking port for small things but yours seems better for larger things.

Very helpful! Can you tell a successful way of controlling overheating in re-entry of mark 1 cabin?

Thanks, I find that aerobraking as high as you can in the atmosphere and dont be afraid of trying a couple of passes.. Oh and dont forget quicksave just in case ;)

One way I have found successful is by adding the shielded docking port. U will also need to go with inline mk1 instead of the regular one. Doesnt add much weight, helps to dock, and has higher heat tolerance, I cant remember (maybe 2600K). Ofcourse you can add heat shields, but not too practical in mk1 ssto. Personally, I dont see any reason not to go with mk2 parts altogether. They generate lift and look so much cooler. Orb8Ter kinda lost the point here IMHO, if you are going with mk1 parts, stick to 2 rapiers and 1 Nerva. Mk2 parts if you are looking for 4 rapiers and 2 Nerva. Go mk3 for higher load and further travel.

The wobbling is related to rotation of kerbin, your wheel's settings, the CoM and the CoL, theoreically it's possible Stop, but not practically.

disable the stering of the back landing gear and the most important, look the "torque" number in the kerbal engineer mod, this number have to be close to zero as possible, if have a big number, your ship will move sideways when accelerate

Your rear wheels are backwards and should be just slightly behind your center of mass thats why your having to use the whole runway to take off.

Did no one say to turn on angle snap, set to absolute, and verify that with all wheels on the ground, the wheels are perfectly straight up and not angled at all? It looked like they might be angled in a little bit.

Personally I use mechjeb and set my heading to 90 (probably the heading of the runway i forgot lol). It sort of works. Haven't played for a long time so it might not work as well. And for ascent I use mechjeb as well. I am lazy

I will have to experiment with the accents more so will try that and then build up speed in the higher atmosphere before losing air intake :)

Your SSTO creates a lot of drag, KSP has an aerodynamic overlay, that allowes you to visualize aerodynamic effects, you can search in the game options for the butten to turn it on. The overlay will show drag as red arrows, liftingsurface lift as blue ones, fuselage lift in light blue and controlsurface lift in yellow. I can tell you, that these extendable solar panels on the back of your plane are like bricks, creating most of the drag and they are also angled, wich makes the situation even worse, just put them into a servicebay.
You can also enhance your flightcontrol by adding front canards to the plane for better pich control or add A.I.R.B.R.A.K.E.S.
And please use MK 3 parts with cargobays, I dont know, why so many people are suggesting to use MK 2 , they look good, but I havent managed to build an efficent MK 2 SSTO, the drag is redicioulus, I wonder if that is just a bug, that only I am expieriencing, so I swiched over to fairing SSTO's.

Dear Orb8Ter, I love most of your videos. In this one, I cant understand why you used mk1 parts, when mk2 parts would look and work so much better. For 4 rapiers and Nerva combo mk2 is better I think. Maybe some special reason (love to know), but I can do the whole mission with mk2 parts much more efficiently and cleanly. It would also look so much better IMHO.. Now, to the snaking problem.. LG placement is critical even when it comes to real planes. Ideally you would want the rear wheels to be "just" behind the centre of lift, Not the CG which WILL be much more forward (like a meter behind COL in real world) and the front wheels to be half the distance from nose to rear wheels. Putting front LG too forward will cause yawing or snaking. Putting rear wheels too back will cause the same. This way most of the weight will be spread over the 2 rear landing gears and a lighter, but still good enough load on the forward gear so that you can maintain steering authority. I have found when using medium LGs best is to disable the rear wheel steering. If using unsteerable LGs, use the same principles, but have rudder authority to correct yawing. It will be like 30m/s atleast before you get solid rudder authority. Ensure equal weight distribution on either side. These next ideas are bugs of KSP and not much to do with ur craft. If you still find your craft veering to one side, eg to the left, rotate your craft one click to the right (not snap, be careful to turn just one click) in the SPH. Detach and reattach all the landing gears (note that attaching them to offset or curved parts will offset the wheels causing instability). Last resort is to rebuild the whole craft from scratch. Personally, most of my snaking problems were due to placing the rear LG too far back worried that I would hit my engines. Just put a small LG on your last engine and offset it so that it just reaches and touches the ground before the engine. Increase spring and dampers to the max on this wheel. Rest is up to the Krakens! Cheers buddy!

The reason I made this in Mk1 parts is more of a progression I did realize Mk2 parts will be better its just more of a personal challenge especially when I realized there were no cargo bays.
Thanks you have given me a lot to think about I have been avoiding space planes like the plague but now I have a steep learning curve though it is keeping KSP fresh again for me, I think I enjoy the challenge of failure thats why my designs can be a bit weird :D

Ashwin Mohan because the mk2 parts are mk2 for a reason... they are obvious “better”. But half the fun of the game is putting a challenge on yourself. It’s fun to build lower tech vehicles
