Bad landing on a paraglider

- Too low, too late. A bit harsh landing on a small, slightly sloped grassy area.
I shouldn't have been there at all. After a valley cross, I was so low and so disappointed, so I took too much risk and entered this area virtually without any landing places. Even having a last chance to land safely, I still continued searching for updraft. A sketchy landing in a sketchy place was my reward.

Great job !
It's really nice to see a good and competent pilot.
the manoeuvres were great, spot all the obstacles, check the spot and finally land.
@Han Boetes To be fair, I've been binge watching videos of "paragliding gone wrong" so seeing a pilot react at all is already a huge step for me :D
But you're totally right, there are a lot of step that could have been taken before
If there was no ridge lift due to the 'no wind here' comment then the flight was already flawed a lot earlier, looking for thermals above trees doesn't work 85 % of the time so a better landing target should have been identified with a lot larger altitude safety margin and a failsafe altitude adopted for safety instead of praying for a low save, the pilot walked away so it is defo a learning opportunity for sure.
A stressful but beautiful landing, congratulations.
Well done under the circumstances. The main thing is you managed to control it enough so that you didn’t hit hard.👍
Congrat man!!! I was thinking elsewhere :) Good landing in this situation!
Looks like a typical Bassano-site 😆
Well fought 👍
Better to avoid that stress, especially because you may meet wrong decisions under stress.
Be careful with hard direction switches immediate before landing (floating) => generates higher speed => heavy impact possible.
THX for the clip!!! Greats
Totally agree. But the hard turn was intentional here, I wanted my wing to dive as the space was quite limited.
Thank you for sharing
Good landing in a tough situation
Nice job getting it into that spot!
Valrovina, the worst place to land in Bassano! Great work!
Good analysis and good save!!
Thanks for watching!
Wow amazing landing!
great landing given the circumstances. The road was an option to avoid those last two turns
Was there a bit of stress involved? 😁. A bit terrifying to see how your brakes were going lower and lower as you were getting cornered into that tiny spot. Well done! Nice outcome in the end 😁
I think you did a fine job there buddy. Threaded the needle. Nice!!!!
Spot on, well done
What do you want? Looks great. More flare, then perfect.
Pourquoi ne pas avoir choisi de posé sur la route ?
Well that had my sphincter locked! I don't take chances like that at all. If I'm within 100 meters of trees, I'm outta there. Which is probably why I'm not very good at XC too ;)
In the beginning of my paragliding life, I was also very cautious about how close I could fly to trees and terrain. Slowly, as I gained more experience, I had an understanding of what worked well and what didn't. I think you're on the right track - it's better to progress slowly than to try to push all the limits too fast. Safe landings!
Haha, you cannot please all the viewers all the time! Thank you for sharing! I've done similar landings: quick decision and a banked turn and a bit too much brake. Hard landing will result unless you are lucky to fly into a strong-enough wind to slow you down; not the case this time. My only maybe-useful comment is that you had a bit more run on the grass to use up so I wouldn't worry at all at no-wind landing close to a tree. If I can draw a diagram I would do it such that the wide circle of "options" at the time of decision to land (assuming it is approx. 50 m above ground) would be 5 times more than as you dropped to say 10 m (obviously thinking of your glide ratio), so in essence, your options of landing go down to one fifth (or less). I am too old to cut my margin any less than say 50 m before making a final decision to land (in a similar terrain/setting). Low save from this place looks more likely from air above the road and/or houses and not from above the trees, I would guess. Cheers!
Why so few views? This was awesome!👍
fantastic!
Great skill to nail the landing despite the situation. A less skilled pilot in this situation would have ended up in the hospital for sure given the very little amount of options. If I may, why not having flown more back and then do a long final straight into that small grassy line you found, and doing such wild turns almost above it the whole time ? asking cuz i also tend to do something similar, and it doesnt end as nicely as yours.
At this place, it was impossible to approach the landing spot by a straight final glide, because there were some buildings, power lines, and trees just nearby. The camera wide angle makes it look more flat, but in fact the approach was blocked by obstacles, so I had to kind of jump in into that gap. Not an ideal approach though - this is why it's called 'bad landing' :)
Good landing
I had a quite few bad landings without even such difficult terrain and buildup, so I wonder why your turns were slow and smooth when high up and so deep with such bigger dives for the last ones ? I was doing the same early on and paid it many times over. Been told to make the final approach and turns the smoothest and smallest, I thought maybe it was possible to land in the same spot or the road to the left of that field by making a much straigher longer final with small adjustments ? not judging, just curious, as up until before the last 2 very banked turns it was all pretty smooth
Absolutely - it's best to avoid dynamic turns close to the ground. I usually try to get a nice, long, shallow glide path before landing. But in this case there was no room for a shallow and slow turn - buildings, trees and power lines everywhere! The camera fisheye flattens the terrain a lot - I estimated that a straight glide down to the road would be almost impossible. I used the wing dynamics to both enter the landing area and lose the remaining altitude. Not ideal for sure, but have a look at the name of the video 😊
@@dymanoid makes sense for sure, thanks a lot for your explanation and sharing this experience ! my concern with that comment was that a less experienced pilot wouldnt be able to stick it there as well as you did :)
Wow. Good job.
Nette Video danke für die scharing
well done.
Where was it ?
Italy, near Bassano del Grappa.
@@dymanoid lol, I knew it 😂👍
Why bad? Perfekt for this Situation !
You did it👍
Good job, i wish always cold landing beer.
I'm just at the ground handling stage. What sort of wing were you flying? I also noticed early in the game you were still seeking lift. If you had given up earlier did you see any place better to land?
Thanks for watching! The wing is a Phi Allegro X-Alps, an EN-C glider. I took it for a test flight. And yes, you are right - I was trying to find some lift but should have flown to a better landing instead. In the beginning of the video, I showed it with an arrow, it was a pretty large green area.
@@dymanoid thanks for writing back sir God bless you for that. I live all alone in a place where the service of the earth looks like a prune. When I leave the school I will have to fly all alone and I will have to make judgments just like you made here. I'm still at the ground handling stages but when I leave the school I'm not going to have anybody around to give me advice or ask questions. I noticed in the video when you had a lot of altitude above ground level, you saw nice landing place over there you could get to but you have enough skills to take a gamble look for a little more lift and if you don't set her down somewhere else. It would not be hypocrisy at all if you told me you need to turn here Mark if you're not high enough in the air!! Generally where I live the terrain is pretty landing friendly. I have one friend that's a farmer and his going to let me fly from his place. My only goal is to fly up in the air and get up under a cloud when the air is unstable and throwout 5 lb box of cornstarch.I'm going to try to pick a cloud that is aiming at his farm so it's directly upwind of the farm and time it right so the rain falls out of the cloud when it goes over his farm. This would be worth $20,000 to him if I can get it to work even once. If I get it to work once or people think it rained because of me I will have other farmers and they will all invite me to fly from their farm. Since I will be flying alone and I have very little experience I'm going to try to have a set of ironclad rules for the lone pilot. Rule number one is always put your harness all the way on or take your harness all the way off. I've seen people remind each other to buckle their leg straps a couple times while I was at the flying school and there's not going to be anybody there ever to tell me two buckle my leg straps so I'm going to put my harness all the way on or take it all the way off. If I am ever fortunate enough to flying in a cross country contest, I have another rule if the people running the contest say the weather is going bad and you should land land immediately. One of the more experienced pilots from my school went to a contest in Texas and they told him the land and he did not want to land so he did not land. Everybody went to look for him. Everybody's radio went dead they looked and looked and they finally quit. The next day the airplane people that hunt for people said we have no idea where he might have went no way to understand what he was thinking what do you think he did? The people from my school said we believe that he went this way and we searched up to this point. The next day they found him dead five hundred yards past the end of the search from the day before. I'm trying to look at this as a judgment problem. As a new pilot I need to reduce the number of judgments I am making as much as possible with some ironclad rules. If you can think of anything that's an absolute rule that everybody should do every time please let me know. So far one idea I have is to lay out the parachute and lay out the harness. Then very carefully attach the two. Inspect everything very carefully and then put on my harness all the way. I see other people who have their harness on and then when they do a reverse launch they have to cross this one over the top of that one if they're turning this way across that one over the top of this one if they're turning that way. I don't see a real good reason to put the harness on first and then try and attach the risers and the trim tabs second. Anything you can contribute to these thoughts would be much appreciated.
@@markmcgoveran6811 The only thing I could suggest is to find someone you can learn from - after the flying school. Learning from UA-cam videos is not the best idea, even considering the best videos from the best pilots like Chrigel Maurer or Gavin McClurg. If you can, find someone you can share your thoughts and flights with.
@@dymanoid it's going to be a long search. I've been here forty years and I've seen one power paraglider a decade ago.
Nice one. 🙏🙏🙏🙏
The pilot is alive - the flight is successful
Use superior judgment over superior skill
Wow, echt gut gemacht.
A landing that you walk away from is a good landing.
Отлично, дружище!
Вопрос только: как попал в это положение?
What I never understand with these types of video is the thing most of them have in common: Choking the absolute life out of the wing by breaking it to death... At the beginning, there were all kinds of options, including flying out the valley in the distance... With hands up and a bit of accelerator, that would have been eeeeeasy...
I don't see breaking to death here. Do you mean the last moment where I initiated a spin & dive? It was intentional.
@@dymanoid No, I mean pretty much every second of this video... You know? Where you're flying with massive break on for no discernable reason at all?
@mcbrite There is no massive brake input here, it's the cam's wide angle. Allegro X-Alps has at least 12 cm free brake travel. Also note how fast I fly above the trees with no wind at 1:05. Would that be possible on an almost stalled wing?
@@dymanoid No worries, just fly how you want... I can only tell you...
Safe flying!
Looked fine to me.
At 1:12 the landing area shown with a blue arrows looks reachable on the video, but you decided to stay around with a 180° => that's it you're stuck there
At that time, I already aimed to land near the road and didn't even consider the other places anymore. I just should have flown to the better site much earlier.
Respekt 👍
Thats a good landing pal
_Good landing_ ))
not bad
I'd just put landing gear down way sooner
Not that bad 😜
