I personally like the perth mint a little bit more than the Canadian Mint but Canadian minted coins are getting better because of that Shield technology... so in the recent months since learning this I started picking up 2 oz Canadian mint coins.. anyway thanks for your input

Milk spotting is caused by the manufacturing process of the coins. Detergent used. And there's no way of removing it. It's not simply caused by moisture from the air.

I'm from Singapore where we have about 80% humidity. I have to keep my silver coins in a drawer with silica gel to absorb moisture. I displayed a few coins in an open cabinet and sure enough I had a milk spotting problem with all except the Canadian Maple Leaf ones.
I used my wife's silver polishing cloth for those coins with milk spotting and it worked. 😊

I 100% agree with this advice. I wish I could go back and stick to this plan. When I started stacking last Sept I bought only what was on sale for the lowest premium. I bought into the idea that silver is silver and you want as much weight for your dollar. Then I started favoring items that I didn't have yet (rookie move) like a collector. I do recall that RCM bars were way more expensive and I didn't see them on sale often. But the coins were on sale occasionally. The penny dropped when I started to think about my untimely death and the mess I have created for my wife. She will absolutely get ripped off when converting to funny money because she could not care less about PMs try as I may to educate her.

I believe that the general consensus is that it comes from a detergent that's used on the dyes. I don't think I've ever seen an ASE with milk spots. The British Mint has the worst reputation for milk spots but they claim to have made efforts to fix it. Actually, I think it was they that did the research on what causes it. Love maples for their elegant design, general quality, and price/value.

    Improper/inadequate, "pre-stamp" cleaning.

As a Canuck, I don’t think it’s any sense of nationalist fervour that keeps me stacking primarily RCM silver - it’s definitely quality and price. I appreciate the RCM silver’s .9999 purity AND the anti-spotting tech applied to the metal.
I’m a huge fan of Australia’s sovereign mint as well - the Perth Mint also produces .9999 silver products, and premiums (in Canada, anyway) are usually much lower than we find on items originating from the US Mint, the UK’s Royal Mint, the South African or Austian Mints, or even some private mints like Scottsdale, Valcambi, even Geiger. It could be that premiums for products from the RCM are kept lower for those of us actually making our purchases in Canada, but judging from a glance at online store prices around the globe, I don’t think so. Just buy some - you’ll be happy!

    • @BurntRaisinToast
      @BurntRaisinToast Рік тому

Also - milk-spotting tip - I live in the BC rain forest, where the humidity can be crazy. I keep my coins/round in their tubes, with a square of anti-tarnish cloth wadded up beneath the cap to prevent any moisture from getting in. Individual & large coins are kept sealed in coin/bar capsules, and I wrap all hand-poured silver in anti-tarnish cloth before it’s vaulted. I add silica gel moisture-absorbing packets to the storage boxes. The last time I checked, everything still looked great!

I have a few privy marked silver maples with a frost finish. They are pretty cool looking coins. Similar to the Perth Mint coins that are frosted, but the maples just look cooler to me. The Pressburg Mint has some impressive designs too.
Out of the major government bullion coins, probably the China Panda and the Britannias are the coolest looking to me. I like that the Panda coins change designs each year.

Is quality that important in reality? I feel like there’s layers to this conversation and obviously there’s reasons with which the conversation gets complicated but when you are dealing with a economic collapse silver is going to be valuable and like you said a ounce of silver is a ounce of silver then the lower the price is the better decision

    Advantages of the Maple Leaf:
Acceptance - it is the most sold and recognized silver coin worldwide. Produced over 30 years.
Fineness - most silver is only 999 fine, the maple leaf has an incredibly high fineness of 999.9/1000, which is medical grade. Can be melted and used in the electronic industry without further refining.
Government issued - people you sell to or barter with will trust that it’s legit.
Security features - the front is embossed so precisely that it is almost forgery-proof. Laser-engraved security mark.
Traceability - maples 2015 and later have BULLION DNA™ anti-counterfeiting technology so dealers can verify their authenticity.
Protective coating - maples 2018 and later won’t milk spot or tarnish. No other coin has this.

Milk spots do hurt the value; take some milk spotted coins to a coin store and you’ll probably get $1. or $2. less for them.

Hi howard lang! You're absolutely right! My LCS was paying $10 over spot for non-spotted ASEs, and $6 over for spotted ASEs. My LCS said that they can sell them at the highest premium if they're spotted. 😎

If you watch my other videos you will understand the context. I don't ever plan of selling. I'm talking in regards to a dollar collapse. No one will care at that point imo. In fact, it could be used as tool to prove the silver is real.

In the older RCM coins the more extreme milk spotting was due to being cleaned with Borax during the stamping process.
In the case of the plastic essey they often come in, you have to wonder if there is PVC in that plastic. Personally i use Air-Tite acrylic capsules from Direct Fit.

I'm Canadian so I mostly stack 80% coins, Maples and other Canadian coins.
I'm slowly trading my international coins to Canadian.
The Royal Mint in the UK makes beautiful bullion but the milkspot very quickly, so no more of their stuff for me.
ASEs are mediocre, and not worth the premium in my opinion.
