    This was the first of your videos that I watched. Wow! I love the concept, a multipurpose area. This was the exact video I was looking for. Thank you.

    Here it is! Everything I've been planning, a protected garden w/ quail that aren't in tiny cages. I love it!!! Thanks for the tour! Do the quail put themselves up at night?

      Also wondering about how you get them back into the keeping pen. Also do they lay eggs among the plants?

      unfortunately not really and you have to round them up a bit but it doesn't take long

      I was wondering the same thing. Also, do you use any lights to extend their laying season. I have an aviary and love the idea of extending it into a garden as you have done.

      @@BethOvertonCPMmidwife I do not use any lighting to extend the laying season. I think they enjoy the down time. I give them the winter off. It also works well to do this if you are doing a late summer hatch to increase flock numbers. many quail are not feather sexable so you have to wait until they mature to find out who is who. They do not crow or act like roosters out of season and they all get along. I wait until spring and then sort out who is who, which roosters get to stay and which ones do not.

      Really this is what I was thinking all along, open mesh greenhouse with free range quail and their own litte area and shelter inside of it. Fantastic-

    Hi There, castle indeed, do quail retreat to the sheltered part on their own, or do they need encouragement?

    • @lorilatendresseuniqueeatsg6647

      some do and some need to be rounded up. it doesn't take very long though.

      @@lorilatendresseuniqueeatsg6647 Why do they need to go the sheltered area at night?

      @@PeterPanQuails the garden is only day time secure and if something wanted to get in there (like a rat or we have small weasels) it could. Their shelter is completely predator proofed.

    How do you get them to go from the garden back into the aviary?

    Awesome! Do you have to go out and find and collect eggs daily?

    • @lorilatendresseuniqueeatsg6647
      @lorilatendresseuniqueeatsg6647  2 роки тому +3

      yes but they usually make little nests or drop them on the pathways. occasionally I step on one. I"m in the garden a lot so it doesn't seem like extra work.

    Hi Lori how do you find your feeders for the quail aren't they wasting a lot with that style

    • @lorilatendresseuniqueeatsg6647
      @lorilatendresseuniqueeatsg6647  2 роки тому

      I tend to waste more than they do. the holes could have been a little bit higher but I've been using them for a couple years now and find they work pretty good.

    • @PeterPanQuails
      @PeterPanQuails 2 роки тому +3

      It doesn't matter in this type of setup. They would feed on the food left on the ground. It only matters if the quails are in a cage where the floor is just the wire.

    How do you get the birds to go inside at night?

    • @lorilatendresseuniqueeatsg6647
      @lorilatendresseuniqueeatsg6647  2 роки тому +3

      you do have to to round them up but the majority of them learn that it is time to go back into the secure house and go in on their own. They are tiny little things so pretty easy to scoop up and toss into the house if they don't go on their own.
