The Golden Gate International Exposition (GGIE) (1939 and 1940), held at San Francisco's Treasure Island, was a World's Fair celebrating, among other things, the city's two newly built bridges. The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge opened in 1936 and the Golden Gate Bridge in 1937. The exposition opened from February 18, 1939, through October 29, 1939, and from May 25, 1940, through September 29, 1940.
The 1939-40 New York World's Fair was a world's fair held at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens, New York, United States. It was the second most expensive American world's fair of all time, exceeded only by St. Louis's Louisiana Purchase Exposition of 1904. Many countries around the world participated in it, and over 44 million people attended its exhibits in two seasons. It was the first exposition to be based on the future, with an opening slogan of "Dawn of a New Day", and it allowed all visitors to take a look at "the world of tomorrow".
When World War II began six months into the 1939 World's Fair, many exhibits were affected, especially those on display in the pavilions of countries under Axis occupation. After the close of the fair in 1940, many exhibits were demolished or removed, though some buildings were retained for the 1964-1965 New York World's Fair, held at the same site.

There were two dueling World's Fairs in 1939.
The New York one was officially recognized by the Bureau Of International Expositions. The San Francisco fair wasn't.
An updated version of the GM "Futurama" was featured at the company' exhibit at the 1964 New York World's Fair.

Yes, and the push for these new roads destroyed old neighborhood (never to be resettled) and even more slums of forgotten people!
The 1960's really pushed for these new highways to be built, and cutting right through many a quite city block.

Well, so much for future planning.
Kinda like Popular Mechanics saying we’d all fly to work.
Traffic jams and parking lots at WalMart are bad enough!

These old futurists always seemed to assume that in the future, societal progress would somehow become more planned and less market-driven. Their visions of smart, efficient, life-enrichening solutions weren't always the most profitable and if not, weren't the path taken.

@@lawrencedoliveiro9104well that is interesting. These good-for-society solutions are more of a Socialist outlook.

Definitely some elements that were left out of the concept of what a “utopian” environment might look like 20 years into the future. I’ll leave it to your imaginations as to what those elements are.

That stove technology we STILL don't have. I was amazed at that, they use that tech with hot rollers but not stoves. Wonder why?? Did the military take it?? Was it a Tesla invention?? Makes you wonder

One can see how the USA became so opposed to involvement in 'overseas' wars given how wonderful their future was as portrayed in this movie. It looks so great, as long as you are white middle class, of course. Thankfully, Roosevelt saw through this propaganda. Then the war became very much 'not overseas' and reality made a 'home coming' big style!

For one, the mass hysteria against the consumption of fossil fuels. Two, ignoring the facts such as the discovery and consumption of fossil fuels prevented the extinction of most of the whales of the oceans, the 90% drop in global poverty and starvation and the doubling of the human lifespan to name just a few.
And, before you go on a irrational rant about atmospheric C02, let me add that, in the past, it has been warmer with lower levels of C02 in the atmosphere.
C02 = LIFE. Plants thrive on C02. C02 is making the Earth greener.

@@libertyforever4270 Nothing irrational about facing the consequences of increased CO2 in the atmosphere. The assertion that there were similar levels of CO2 in the distant past ignores what the Earth was like in those times...better suited to dinosaurs than humans.
