Ernesto Sirolli: Want to help someone? Shut up and listen!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 лис 2012
- When most well-intentioned aid workers hear of a problem they think they can fix, they go to work. This, Ernesto Sirolli suggests, is naïve. In this funny and impassioned talk, he proposes that the first step is to listen to the people you're trying to help, and tap into their own entrepreneurial spirit. His advice on what works will help any entrepreneur.

Just gave this guy a ride to the airport in my Lyft. Total genius.
He is a family friend of mine. He is absolutely brilliant and has great insight into things like this. Just a very intelligent guy
Awesome you got to meet him!
"If people do not wish to be helped, leave them alone." SO TRUE!!
I met this man today and was fortunate enough to spend half an hour talking with him and I must say he was an inspiration.
The moment Africa is left alone it started blooming; "don't walk infront of me I may not follow, don't walk behind me I may not lead, just walk beside me and be my friend"
I love this man
Yup. Try telling that to Bill Gates...
^^^
@@laorientalm2554 haahahah You killed me with your comment
I will remember this presentation forever. If only there were more people like this in the world.
There are many. That is how the world moves forward.
you still remember it?
I have watched over and over. Inch by inch.
The passion with which this man is talking takes his already amazing point to an absolutely brilliant one.
Simply THE best TED Talk I've listened to yet.
This guy is brilliant, his humor has nailed the truth to my thoughts on what entrepreneur should be, how we can help people best, and the important of 'we' . I love this talks so much!!!!
He's striking at the core, see what the people want, not what we may think they need. Let them naturally arrive to a better way of life, arrive to answer on their own. I teach high school algebra, the greatest way for a person to learn is to allow them to find and provide just enough resources so the answer can be found without giving it up. Another one of the greatest ways to reach kids is hear what they want to do and help them achieve it, even if it has nothing to do the math.
"My god, the hippos . . .!!!"
lol.
brilliant hes so right when i was volunteering in Africa i saw this phantomon also. I stepped out of the service of my project and started my own (I saw the projects which they were doing didnt help). I talked to people and asked them what was wrong in their lives and what would help to make it better. I helped a few people straight away after a month I had at least 20 people wanting my help. And I helped 6 people with their lives (business and personal). He's so right in this.
Just repaired his garage here in Cali, he is such an interesting man, told me to search him up on Ted talks and what do you know. He had Built an old English car from parts also, pretty cool.
He’s so insightful, his delivery is so passionate, I want to have a beer with him!
'Two ears, one mouth'. Listen twice as much as you talk. The essence of democracy is active listening; it is also an act of fundamental respect. If we talk first, with some agenda, our message is unlikely to hit home or get through. It is as if their cup is full and they will therefor hear nothing. If we listen first, with great intent, it is as if they are pouring out what is relevant to their needs, or troubles and so on and only then can we truly formulate a relevant response that can begin to be taken on board. The ideal is a symbiotic relationship. And when we talk, may it be from the heart. This is the essence of culture and soft power. Grazie Senior Ernesto - wonderful !
There is not only a Western view of the world. There is a Latin American view of the world; an Asian view of the world; an Arab view of the world and an AFRICAN view of the world . . . and so on.
There has never been any other TED talks that make me come back every now and then willingly like this one. It is really good.
8 years working in africa for me. And this is still one of the most enjoyable speeches I have heard
Speech given by this man is full of passion & I feel delightful to hear ernesto's experiences in Africa
Beautiful speech. Loved the gestures, loved the way he spoke. Love the whole talk.
Wow. Me impresiona sr. Sirolli. Como pone en perspectiva un realidad. La importancia de nosotros. Solos no llegamos lejos.
This Speech is given by this man is full of truth wisdom passion & I feel delightful to hear ernesto's experiences in Africa.
So true. This guy speaks the truth. Such good advice!
I love it when live and learn turns into live, learn and teach. Reminds me, in a small way, of when I visited Jamaica and I was offered watermelon. My friend said, "We call it WATA MELON." Had no idea we have them in Canada too. We don't often clue in on the best ways to teach each other easily. The first step of teaching IS learning. This presentation illustrates that beautifully.
this man oozes passion!! great presentation!!
I can listen to and watch this again and again - this man’s passion is catchy!!
Mind blown!!! This is huge idea that most people don't seem to understand. Listening is key!
I am a freshman in an university of Viet Nam. I have learned digital thinking and I knows the important of empathy someone and the presentation have me so much. Thanks TED and gestures
That's good advice: To listen first and to respond to those who want help, not those who didn't ask for it. Thanks for a great talk!
I feel your pain. You are not alone. I know sometimes it's like you just need to lash out at anything just to get some kind of response but that's ok. You don't have to keep going like this. People respond to love as well, and they do so with love.
I wish you all the best.
Waw! A lot of passion. Thank you.
one of my favorite TED talks so far :)
Conferenza fantastica, saper ascoltare il tuo cliente, sembra che non impariamo mai. 👏👏👏
I am so THANKFUL I got to see this! I assumed it would be boring and hard to follow, BUT he made it so FUN and ENJOYABLE! I laughed way too much and heard a great story, while "learning". THANK YOU!

I have told the hippo story to so many people in the last couple of years, eye-opening in how much we can learn if we can listen. Awesome presentation.
I wish I could have meet him myself everything he say is so true if people don't help leave them alone .

Excellent and absolutely enlightening!
I just listen to this guy in my college class!
Amazing insight... One of the best talks ever
Doing a masters thesis that involves NGOs heavily. While this talk is not 100% on topic for my research, i found several ideas that are congruent with what i have already researched, and a few new ideas that open up additional questions for me to look at. I thoroughly enjoyed this talk, and am very thankful for Dr. Sirolli and TED talks for presenting this material.
Brilliant !!! What an inspiration ! The BEST TED TALK I have listened to yet. Grazie Ernesto.
10:30 - 10:45 music to my ears
Ernesto I started 3 business in Africa (I am African) buying the failed NGOs equipment that the locals sold me when the NGOs left. Made an absolute killing. You are so right when you say no one listens. We just watched and waited then went in and purchased all the first world donated goods.
Inspiration overflowing ! Simply Awesome !!!!!!
Great
What a great lecture. This is the sort of thing that keeps me coming back to TED.
Learn to listen, and listen to learn....a lesson I learned a long time ago...very good TALK Mr. Sirolli. Thanks for sharing.
Very good point, for who has an equanimous mind and experience, not only knowledge, to comprehend what this excellent speaker is saying.
I think the point is that highly educated people go into these communities presuming to know exactly what the problem is and how to fix it, thus the speech on how to put aside those presumptions and listen first, then act, not to act and then listen later. But also to listen to those who are willing to make a lasting change, like an entrepreneur. Ernesto isn't saying that everyone already doesn't know this, he's highlighting that it's obvious some people do not.
If You Summarise this in a few points:-
1) Communication- Enforcing People to buy Solution to a Problem without gathering Insights of them can lead to a Complete Failure.
2) Planning can be the worst step you can take for a Start up if Adaptation is not met with time. Specifically in a Growing Entrepreneurial Econonmy.
3) Confidentiality and Dedication to approach People with Ideas is a must.
And To make them know the 3 steps:
1) Product has to Be Fascinating.
2) So must be the Marketing.
3) Financial Management is a must.
4) You always need a Good Team.
its 4 steps bro

Excellent talk and excellent delivery
It is really amazing to listen your inspiring message! As you said we need to listen the local people ; insiders perspective should be given weight to make development work sustainable. But this does not mean that modern knowledge is unnecessary. We need to make a balance in between.
I really liked this guy.
Right on!
