Brilliant 2 part video! I recently had a relapse in my Crohn's disease after being in remission for about 5-6 years. I had been on the SCD and was med free - unfortunately I had gone off the diet and 2 years later here I am back on youtube relearning about the disease after a severe flare up!

@@westfield90 It's called the Specific Carb Diet. It's almost like paleo - I ate nothing but poultry, beef, and some vegetables. No sauces, sugars, grains, any processed carbs or anything like that. It's very restricting but I got used to it after a few weeks. The idea of the diet is to starve out the types of bacteria in the gut thought to activate the disease in those with IBD. The bacteria that thrive on sugars and carbs have nothing to eat so they die off basically. I'm sure it won't work for everyone but I was completely fine and med free for almost 6 years. I cheated on my diet for almost 2 years until my symptoms started to come back. I would highly recommend trying it.
@@94mac I strictly drank water/seltzer, and when I drank alcohol I drank whiskey or dry red wine. Outside of that for food - it was just beef, poultry, and stuff like green beans as a side. I would use natural peanut butter and sometimes had it with a very ripe banana. Soda is a huge NO-NO. Anything packed with sugar is thought to feed the bacteria that the immune system deems a threat in people with the disease. The only way to keep that bacteria out of the gut is to avoid foods that those bacteria thrive on.

For Ulcerative Colitis one way of treatment as you mention is to give anti-TNF alpha. Presently, this is only available in IV infusion, this being because the anti-TNF alpha is a protein and would be destroyed by stomach acids and small intestine proteases. However, hypothetically, if there were an oral form of anti-TNF alpha delivery that would protect the anti-TNF alpha from degradation and reach the colon intact and then be released in the colon, thereby allowing the anti-TNF alpha to be released directly where the inflammation is happening, do you think this ought to provide more effective therapy than the current IV infusion of anti-TNF alpha? This assuming greatest bioavailability of the drug to cells facing the colon cavity would be more beneficial than perfusing through the blood and reaching the lining of the colon.

Vedolizumab has has seen an increase in use as well) instead of an antimetabolite (MTX or 6-MP) or 5-ASA, which can be added to augment later.
Very very rarely can we go straight to a biologic as first line in IBD anywhere in the world; least of all the US with its private insurance companies requiring step therapy
Yeah Michael your wrong. First line of treatments are always 5asa then immunomodulators, and then biologics. Now drs May have a preference on which med based on clinical presentation but the med processes I layed out for you are known as the standard of care.

If systemic means 'stemming from' and as B12 deficiency anaemia is a possible secondary complication due to the primary disease. Then why firstly would a student, lay person or professional need to remember 'interleukin 6' / 'hepcidin? If B12 deficiency was a secondary affect (complication) resulting from mal absorption of B12 in the colonic region of the intestinal tract? Did you really mean colonic or chronic?

in terms of smoking… does that mean just cigarettes? or does smoking marijuana make crohn’s worse? i use it to help with my symptoms, but i will switch to edibles if it’s better for me. edibles just take so long to provide relief :(

Brilliant 2 part video! I recently had a relapse in my Crohn's disease after being in remission for about 5-6 years. I had been on the SCD and was med free - unfortunately I had gone off the diet and 2 years later here I am back on youtube relearning about the disease after a severe flare up!
What is SCD and how long were you off the diet before you got the flare up?. What is the diet that helped you? Wishing you the best and hope you feel better.
@@westfield90 It's called the Specific Carb Diet. It's almost like paleo - I ate nothing but poultry, beef, and some vegetables. No sauces, sugars, grains, any processed carbs or anything like that. It's very restricting but I got used to it after a few weeks. The idea of the diet is to starve out the types of bacteria in the gut thought to activate the disease in those with IBD. The bacteria that thrive on sugars and carbs have nothing to eat so they die off basically. I'm sure it won't work for everyone but I was completely fine and med free for almost 6 years. I cheated on my diet for almost 2 years until my symptoms started to come back. I would highly recommend trying it.
Patrick Thomas what did you drink just water , natural juices or were you able to drink a soda here and there?
@@94mac I strictly drank water/seltzer, and when I drank alcohol I drank whiskey or dry red wine. Outside of that for food - it was just beef, poultry, and stuff like green beans as a side. I would use natural peanut butter and sometimes had it with a very ripe banana.
Soda is a huge NO-NO. Anything packed with sugar is thought to feed the bacteria that the immune system deems a threat in people with the disease. The only way to keep that bacteria out of the gut is to avoid foods that those bacteria thrive on.

For Ulcerative Colitis one way of treatment as you mention is to give anti-TNF alpha. Presently, this is only available in IV infusion, this being because the anti-TNF alpha is a protein and would be destroyed by stomach acids and small intestine proteases. However, hypothetically, if there were an oral form of anti-TNF alpha delivery that would protect the anti-TNF alpha from degradation and reach the colon intact and then be released in the colon, thereby allowing the anti-TNF alpha to be released directly where the inflammation is happening, do you think this ought to provide more effective therapy than the current IV infusion of anti-TNF alpha? This assuming greatest bioavailability of the drug to cells facing the colon cavity would be more beneficial than perfusing through the blood and reaching the lining of the colon.
Carnivore diet is a much better treatment than any drugs, this is what I have found after having ulcerative colitis for 18 years.

Excellent excellent presentation. However, first line treatment for UC and crohn's (at least in the US) is often an mAb (most commonly adalimumab or, less commonly, infliximab. Vedolizumab has has seen an increase in use as well) instead of an antimetabolite (MTX or 6-MP) or 5-ASA, which can be added to augment later.
Very very rarely can we go straight to a biologic as first line in IBD anywhere in the world; least of all the US with its private insurance companies requiring step therapy
Yeah Michael your wrong. First line of treatments are always 5asa then immunomodulators, and then biologics. Now drs May have a preference on which med based on clinical presentation but the med processes I layed out for you are known as the standard of care.

But when you speak about a systemic complications of IBDs like about B12 insufficient anemia, I`m not sure its correctly (especially in context of UC): firstly we have to be remembering about interleukin 6 / hepcidin / hypo chromic anemia
If systemic means 'stemming from' and as B12 deficiency anaemia is a possible secondary complication due to the primary disease. Then why firstly would a student, lay person or professional need to remember 'interleukin 6' / 'hepcidin? If B12 deficiency was a secondary affect (complication) resulting from mal absorption of B12 in the colonic region of the intestinal tract? Did you really mean colonic or chronic?
