This song has a special place in my heart. I grew up with the Sandmann tv show/song and can still sing the goodnight song. They always played it on NDR (German tv channel), which was pretty much the only channel that had children’s tv on it back in the day. Plus I played this song for my German class and analyzed it etc. got an A+ for the assignment.

It was also the main theme for the trailer, and i blieve the film as well, for "Lilya 4 ever", by Lukas Modysson. An extremely dark, but good, film (from imdb: This is the stark, frank and disturbing vision of the life of a young victim of the underground sex trade and in all its tone of realism of abject poverty, despicable actions and of wanting to show that dreaming of a better life is not a crime but that life can shatter the illusion of a happy ending.)
The Sandman comic-books/graphical-novels by Neil Gaiman is still my favorite depiction of Sandman to this day!
I am from Scandinavia. We have really dark children's stories, but this is really visceral. To get to the subject, Rammstein always delivers. It is not always nice, but it always has a purpose.
One of my favourite films 'Lilya 4-Ever' opens with this song. It was the first time I'd heard Rammstein and I've loved them ever since.
I can never hear this song without thinking of that movie. It's a great film, but I don't think I can ever watch it again. The story is just too emotionally heavy.
Let's take a moment to appreciate the fact that Ken, aside from the great technical analysis , has a stellar charisma. There are many cool, technical, reactors there. But Ken must be, along Elizabeth Zaroff, one of the most likeable human beings in the whole universe.

One of my highest wishes is for Rammstein to make an album like Metallica did with their S&M album that they made with the San Francisco Symphony.. this song really shows how well they can work with string instruments and if they could make renditions of their top songs I think I could die happy. :D

Yes, you're right. The template is actually a German television program for children that has been broadcast since the 1960s. The little sandman comes to the children every evening and throws sand in their eyes to make them tired. He tells the children a bedtime story, which is always announced with the same words. "Nun liebe Kinder gebt fein acht, ich hab' euch etwas mitgebracht" (Now, dear children, pay attention, I brought you something). Rammstein made a nightmarish story out of this introduction. The link shows one of the many bedtime stories and also includes the famous introduction.

I am from Austria, so german native, to me it sounds completely different if you say it in english or german too. So I agree on that very much. Till gives it a little extra on top of course. He compared writing songs in englishe versus german, where he talked about something like that too.
So yes, we sound a little bit evil sometimes, but are actually not 😀
Also I recommend "Frühling in Paris" live in America, it's a ballad.
The Austrian dialect sounds way nicer than our Hochdeutsch 😉

I’ll never get tired of Rammstein reactions lol. It’s crazy how many years went by before they finally made this music video for this track.
Speaking of which, I cannot recommend the piano version of this highly enough!!! This song is a banger on its own but you HAVE to watch the piano version. It’s one of the best performances and music videos I’ve ever seen. It’s a piece of art in and of itself and I can’t watch it without crying lol.

I am from Germany and I like this Band, in about a month friends and I are visiting they in Switzerland a Concert. 2 of us the second time one the first time. A another friend visit last year one conzert in Stuttgart, and suprised us, he didn`t like Rammstein but his mother liked them.
The music video was filmed in a former mental hospital. Near Berlin, in Belzig. There are 2 versions of the video, the 2nd is a piano version. The text is interpreted differently by everyone. Because Till Lindemann leaves a lot of leeway in his texts and rarely makes clear statements. Many texts can be found in his volumes of poetry in their raw form. We recommend.
there is even a third video. When they started this video they had the director Eugenio Recuenco. The band thought that the video faild in delivering a story. So the ended the video with Zoran Bihać. The first version can still be found on the internet. It has in my opinion superior images but it indeed doesn't deliver the story. It isbreally worth watching.
@@martinscholer5419 I agree with you. The alternative video has really a lot of interesting footage, but it simply lacks the atmosphere. Probably some editing and colour grading would help a lot, but I was generally really disappointed when I first saw this version.
What a good song , I can’t even say which of the two versions are s the best ! And also in the chorus my heart burns with those strings 😂 it is so powerful that song and creepy too hahha I love them ! Rammstein makes me enjoy so much about other feelings with their music !

Please also check "Till Lindemann"! Is/was a german-swedish Metal Project by Rammstein Singer Till Lindemann and the swedish Musician Peter Tägtgren. The latter played all the Instruments for the Band until 2020. The Band officially existed since January 2015. Being older, I've seen quite a few rock collaborations with other types of music. Even before Fleetwood Mac and the USC Marching band. They're ALWAYS great for some reason. A shame it doesn't happen more often.

besides the cute Sandmann from the childrens tv program, they also took inspiration of ETA Hoffmanns Sandmann (1860's I think, or thenabout) which I more in line with the music video and lyrics. But especially with the video to the pianoversion, it twists the perspective again, imo, and becomes somewhat of a tragic story about a being that has no choice to torture and torment. The beauty in rammstein lyrics is the openess with which we can interpret them, each on our own.
Apparently though, a perspectiv here is, that the children symbolize emotions of grown men, forced to shut them down (to be a strong tough guy)

The working title for "Mein Herz brennt" was "Sandmann". The Sandman is a positively charged figure in German-language folk mythology. He is supposed to put young children to sleep by sprinkling sand in their eyes. The title is also taken from a story by E. T. A. Hoffmann, in which the Sandman is a monster who plucks out the eyes of small children in order to feed them to his young.
The song describes children's nightmares with "demons, ghosts, black fairies" from the point of view of the Sandman, who, according to a recurring line in the chorus, is "the voice from the pillow" that haunts the children night after night.

5:08 As disturbing as the imagery may initially appear on face value, always keep in mind that Rammstein are very metaphorical, poetic and double, triple or multiple meaning with the message their artistic performances broadcast. However, that's not to say the literal and obvious message at the surface isn't a direct commentary on the given topic, either. One must engage with the lyrics and imagery on multiple levels and step back and digest from other angles.
Could you please do a reaction to "ich will" by Rammstein? It's a super cool interaction with the audience, and I'd love to hear and see what you have to say about the things around, not just the voice and lyrics and such things... but of course, also the voice and lyrics.

It's not important but i do understand german. Maybe you know that inmost of european countries ppl study multiple languages except in UK. It's pretty normal to understand at least 2, mostly 3 languages. My Swedish is bit rusty but still do understand like 80%.

How insane or arrogant can a human be? Rammstein has several layers on there art that you can barely undestand if you are not a native German speaker, I think.
