Always felt for years death metal is the hardest and most technical style of guitar to learn, still remember getting a new guitar for Christmas 2006 after hearing CC's KILL album the first time and the next 6 months of internal bleeding, blisters, and carpal tunnel in my hands I endured learning to play this style. Used to always get ridiculed and disrespected by other guitar players also for years because of putting so much effort into learning a style most dont like or appreciate.
You definitely have to play what style you love...that's always the best, and I'm thankful for all of the different styles. There's always an audience that will appreciate every style!
Where were you 32yrs ago when I needed lessons? When I first came across your stuff. I gotta admit. I thought it was kinda cheesy. Then I found myself clicking on more of your videos. Then I found myself learning from your videos. Thanks to you. I have either learned things I never knew. Or I relearned technique’s I didn’t think I needed. Thanks for the lessons.
Your description of how death metal songs are constructed around the 1:50 mark is so refreshing to hear. I'm an old school metal guy, teen in the 80's and I was always into "heavy" metal like Metallica, Slayer, etc. I have just now really gotten into death metal and I'm totally in love. Went to Amon Amarth show last week w/ Cattle Decapitation (HOLY FUCKING SHIT< FAVE NEW BAND) Carcass and Obituary AND I had front row. Talk about an intro into the coolest genre lol. Anyway your description clarifies a lot for a newb like me especially the guitar playing. Kind of like jazz but cool!!
Thank you for the video, Jason! I was reading some comments here, and one I agree with wholeheartedly is play what you enjoy, not what others want you to. This applies to me with Death Metal, Black Metal, Thrash Metal, etc., as I enjoy very well played metal guitar, and learning this style helps me play other styles I enjoy. I started playing Cigar Box Guitars (CBG) last year, and the Blues, Swampy Blues, Delta Blues, etc., are my favorite for that type of guitar. Playing CBG's helps when I switch back to electric guitar because the action is much higher, which makes the electric seem much easier for these fast transitions. So, for me, they are all good.
That's awesome to hear you're playing other styles too! I think it's great to expand and this just gives you a lot more flavor and originality to what you write. I still struggle with sometimes writing what I think people want to hear, on both spectrums, metal and acoustic! So I have to remind myself daily to just play and write what's naturally coming out.
I play drums for a stoner rock band. I’ve always wanted to play some more brutal stuff but wanted to do that with guitar. So, I picked one up a few weeks ago. Still trying to learn how to tremolo pick with it, but man I’m having fun. The older stuff from the 90’s is what I grew up on (44 yo now). Can’t wait to get home and try these out.

Man you make the best videos. Your patterns always sound awesome AND it makes fun to learn them even though sometimes it takes its time. The only thing what I didn't got for a long time was ---> often it sounds cool when you play something really fast but when you're practicing slowly you always think you do something wrong . BUT it's ALL ABOUT THE SPEED
Thank you! Yeah, sometimes trying to play something slow is more difficult with this genre! It’s almost like you just have to jump in there and start playing it fast, and eventually nail it!
I just want to say thank you for taking the time to make these videos, man. Your approach to teaching and the energy you have is just amazing. I'm totally self taught and this genre is possibly my favorite! Getting into the local music scene here sucks because anyone that knows anything covets that information like a dragon hiding jewels. Thank you, brother and glad this lesson helps! Yeah, getting out there playing live can be tough. I play live every weekend but I'm playing covers (mainly 80s rock and pop). I just had a friend play during my break last week and he landed a gig later this month from that! We all pay it forward!
Cool videos, haven’t picked up a guitar or owned one for over 27 years. Just recently purchased a nice dean custom 24 with active metal pickups and a fender gtx 50 amp for starters. Makes one realize You should have never sold that axe years ago when you could shred with the best of em . Then again I do think guitars have evolved some . That’s a good thing. One thing I do appreciate about your videos is how you give solid advice, especially alternate picking, learning scales , notes . I whole heartedly agree if you don’t use it you loose it . Cheers

Quality content as allways!!! great vid for starting out death-metal playing or getting back into (like me... caugh) Let's take a look from the nerd-side of things: Riff 1 would mainly be the A-harmonic-minor key with a switch to the A-phrygian-mode. Switching from "pure" minor(1-2-b3...) to the mode of phrygian (1-b2-b3...) works really well, since in its charakter it is basically the same scale. This way you also could switch keys, 'cause A-phrygian is within the scale of F-major/D-minor. And I am going this far to claim: without the harmonic minor scale death metal wouldn't even exist. (Pls, correct me, if I'm wrong in any way!!!) Imho theory helps tremendously with building riffs, espacially in more complex styles of music, like DM. (took me twenty years to understand 😭, to all of you...pls, don't waste your time with beeing ignorant...) Though rumours exist, that at decent speed chromatics allways work 😁 Quote: "...(Death-)Metal is the continuation of classical music by other means..."
Hey Jason!, great video! really well explained and thought out. you come across very well and easy to follow, I found it very useful and informative. keep up the good work pal. \w/
This is awesome bro! I'm a player coming out of retirement and Thrash and old school Death is my main influence! I used mostly the Locrian mode and Diminished/Minor modes. Basically a mix of Morbid Angel and Exodus as one of the many examples! Are those EMG 85 & 81??!! Best pickups ever.
Actually just signed up for 'Free' Metal Lessons buddy. I'm on Disability (fixed-income) so just dropping $50 is something I don't really do much these days lol 😆. Been playing almost 24 yrs (doing Luthier work 16 of those yrs) but I've always been a metal rhythm guitar player. I'd say the past 4 maybe 5 yrs I've really been working/studying on more theory (lol well, the best I can, as well as what I'm able to get ahold of). Trying to out on being more of that all around player, leads, possible solo here and there. When it comes to the last (2) like harmonies/leads & solos I definitely could benefit from lessons/directions. I've really enjoyed your channel for the past 2 years I want to say now, and I'll let you know how everything goes here soon. Horns n Hails from AZ
Awesome and thank you. I also have plenty of UA-cam videos out there (checkout my playlists for specific videos on rhythms and leads) Oh, and I have an interview with a luthier from Germany you may like here: ua-cam.com/video/98sNa8XfBQE/v-deo.html
@@jasonstallworth you're way more than welcome, my fellow brotha in strings lol..oh yeah, totally know all about all your other YT vids (you and I have the same mentality when it comes to tuning 😀 my 7-Strings are low enough 😀) been a sub for probably like 3 yrs maybe. You know how it gets when you hit it certain 'levels' if you will, as a guitarist/musician that feels like ya you've plateued?? Almost 24yrs of playing, January I hit that proverbial plateue for the 3rd time in my career/playing lol. (Not trying to ego swell) after watching countless others on YT to brush up on the ol' chops, yours were the only ones(besides old Eddie Van Halen exercises but that's a given) that weren't regurgitate exercises, so thanks from a HANDICAPABLE Metal Head hahahah
Since I'm a big fan of the Early-Old-School Death Metal Music I can see the techniques where the scales are coming from? I see how perfectly alternated the pickings are More Melodic Shredding at most times but Raw and Dirty Riffs as well in hindsight this is performed well.
In the future could you do some videos on stuff not using the pinky? My pinky hurts pretty bad today so I have to practice without it. I have my own ways of adjusting for it but just wanted to see what the master has to say. Enjoyed this video and SKAL bro. Very Cool lesson, FYI. I’m Thai. And your name in Thai Font spells like this “เจสัน” (the upper vowel is a bit different…. BTW i’m glad that you like Thai Font❤

I’m hoping to stop by some music stores there and meet some local musicians and hope to film some content for UA-cam while we are there!
Hey thanks really good lesson! Cant’t wait for the next dm riff lesson! In the second lesson just thought i’d point out that tab is off…the note on the lower E string should be C not B.
Second riff isn't it 9.8.7. and 8 on e string? Tab on screen says 7. Was playing it and couldn't figure how you'd do 7.7 with your fingers and zoomed in and see A string 7 and E string 8. Correct me if I'm wrong! :) Otherwise, thank you. Fun riffs to play! Trying to line them up together like you do at end!
Thank you and glad this helped. I do mess up on the tabs at times (which is often why I don't include them in my videos). I do give complete (and correct) tabs along with backing tracks to at least 2 of my UA-cam lessons each month on my Patreon: www.patreon.com/jasonstallworth

Those are some basic riffing to me!, cool sounding for sure! I like the grooving of the final third riff. My problem is I do not know what to mix with I. I am not a Drummer or a Bassist. I make things up so often. I am not really thinking when I play I just start playing. Like some kind on meditation theoopy for myself. I start with an idea then mix with stuff I have dome over the years.
I currently use the MXR Smartgate but may simplify that soon. I just published a video showing my 'minimalist' live rig setup using that pedal: ua-cam.com/video/J4Hwnxh7C1E/v-deo.html
What tunings do you use? Both on 6 and 7 strings. Thinking of writing in these tuning pairs. That way when performing live I don’t have to switch to a 6 string for all the 6 string songs, can just play them on 7 E ♭ Standard (6) B ♭ Standard (7) C Standard (6) G Standard (7) D Standard (6) A Standard (7) E Standard (6) B Standard or Drop A (7)
Hey Jason.....off topic question...your riff master course....im a just entered “intermediate” level player.....would I be able to hang with this course or wait till im more of an intermediate player first??? Thanks buddy!!!👍 #ThrowIRON #PlayMetal
Dude, it's actually designed for intermediate-level guitarists, and I know that's sort of broad. But the first couple of lesson modules really focus on riffs that integrate the core basics of classic heavy metal playing, like palm muting, moving those power chords around (I show you different types of power chords, which are really cool), and getting into some single note riffs. Once you get to module 3, you get into alternate picking. Lesson modules 7 and 8 are the most challenging ones as you get more into that thrash metal style and using some different methods. All that said, I think it's good for you to get in and you can certainly grow with the course as you progress. I don't mean for this to be a sales pitch, but I'm confident in this course and really put my heart and soul into it and have had so much awesome feedback!
Hey, do you have anything on doom or even death-doom guitar 6 or 7 string? that's the path I'm taking as a musician as I showed you with my last band. Also I had signed up and started learning from your videos a few weeks ago.
As I hadn't mentioned I have been playing guitar for a while but despite the grades I've been getting through rock guitar playing, i feel that it won't hurt to expand.
Another great lesson Jason. Do you cut your mids on the amp? Trying to r figure my amp settings and and my lows are great but almost too much. Keep it up.
Mandatory mids is just modern metal propaganda. Plenty of death metal bands old and new have gotten away with great tones using scooped mids. Just depends on the amp I guess and like what pickups and speakers you got too

(took me twenty years to understand 😭, to all of you...pls, don't waste your time with beeing ignorant...)
Though rumours exist, that at decent speed chromatics allways work 😁
Quote: "...(Death-)Metal is the continuation of classical music by other means..."
🤘
Hehehe, when in doubt use a chromatic run!
Hehehe ...yes, but I'm afraid, I'm currently not fast enough for chromatics ;-)@@gbormann71
Hey Jason!,
great video! really well explained and thought out. you come across very well and easy to follow, I found it very useful and informative. keep up the good work pal. \w/

Oh yeah!!!🤘🤘Do you have any videos in how to set up and maintain your guitars?
Dude, I'm probably not the best person for that as I take mine to a local shop when something needs a pro setup.
love the shirt man

Awesome! Sounds great!

Awesome to hear you're playing! Love the old school thrash and death metal! Yeo, those are EMGs
After all my player this was still extremely useful ❤

I also have plenty of UA-cam videos out there (checkout my playlists for specific videos on rhythms and leads)
Oh, and I have an interview with a luthier from Germany you may like here: ua-cam.com/video/98sNa8XfBQE/v-deo.html
@@jasonstallworthmy bad!!! I'll definitely check out your upcoming interview buddy 🤘🏻🎸🦾
Sick top!

this is what i need
Awesome, I have another one coming out soon!

(For those that don't know: My RIFFing hand is semi crippled and its taken me years to get where most get in a year.)
Yeah dude, that's definitely possible...and you could get by with these riffs without the pinky, for the most part!
@@jasonstallworth I did a few variations to what you were doing without my pinky. I f-ed up though and used my pinky a few times and it sent some pain all through my hand. Grrr. Anyways, appreciate you bro. SKAL
Very Cool lesson, FYI. I’m Thai. And your name in Thai Font spells like this “เจสัน” (the upper vowel is a bit different…. BTW i’m glad that you like Thai Font❤
Thank you! I have corrected this and my upcoming album will reflect that. I’m h, and wife and I will be in Thailand this November! We will be spending some time in both Bangkok and Chiang Mai. I’m hoping to stop by some music stores there and meet some local musicians and hope to film some content for UA-cam while we are there!
That trill at the end of riff #3 is very reminiscent of Tony Iommi.
Man, he's one of the great masters!
Hey thanks really good lesson! Cant’t wait for the next dm riff lesson! In the second lesson just thought i’d point out that tab is off…the note on the lower E string should be C not B.
Thank you...yeah, I always seem to screw the tab up! lol
Thanks for this. I like old school death metal like cannibal corpse. Good lessons by you. You seem like a cool dude. Some guitar peeps on here are just bs. Love the explanations and tips. Subscribing now.
Yeah, the old school death metal just had this amazing sound and vibe! And thank you for subscribing!
Bands from the 80's and 90's are STILL touring and pumping out albums. How many bands have come and gone in the last 10 yrs?!
Yeah man you don’t see that kind of longevity anymore
What the heck man…tune up your guitar 🤣 NO IM NOT ONE OF THOSE GUYS, just kidding. Awesome demo man! I love old school death metal 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻I can play all of this with ease, but I would like to thank you for showing people how to play awesome death metal riffs like yours here! I play a lot like you. Thx again 🤘🏻
Lol!!! Yeah man, there's something about the rawness of classic death metal! I guess I'm an old dude because most of what I listen to is older stuff!

@@jasonstallworth it's killer, keep the evil shit coming, love it. Everytime I watch the channel it makes me want a 5150 more tho lol. Did you use any pedals by chance?
@@beatlejuice5951 Dude, for the lesson I plugged directly into the amp, no pedals, but I used the blue channel (need a noise gate for the red). My power supply was connect to my acoustic pedalboard and I didn’t feel like switching it! Lol so I just plugged in.
The full mix was actually done using BIAS Amp 2, the Mesa sim
Fire....kill it with fire i used to have a huge obituary crush in my teens
Dude, we actually live in the town Obituary is from...Seffner, FL! (Tampa area). It's insane how much metal used to be here back in the 80s!! I didn't live here during that time though.
Can you show us (or just tell me) what noise gate you use and how you have it set up?
I currently use the MXR Smartgate but may simplify that soon. I just published a video showing my 'minimalist' live rig setup using that pedal: ua-cam.com/video/J4Hwnxh7C1E/v-deo.html
What tunings do you use? Both on 6 and 7 strings. Thinking of writing in these tuning pairs. That way when performing live I don’t have to switch to a 6 string for all the 6 string songs, can just play them on 7
E ♭ Standard (6)
B ♭ Standard (7)
C Standard (6)
G Standard (7)
D Standard (6)
A Standard (7)
E Standard (6)
B Standard or Drop A (7)
I'm always in standard tuning. I've experimented with other tunings but quickly went back to standard.
I think your on-screen tab is slightly incorrect at 4:20. The first E string strike should be on fret 8, not 7.
That's always possible...thanks for the catch
Love the t shirt
🤘
how do you do the chop picking though, it sounds like shit when I do it lol
I have a video specific to picking techniques that may help: ua-cam.com/video/ad5SNkSIQHM/v-deo.html
Very Good , what tuning you Use?
Always standard
Hey Jason.....off topic question...your riff master course....im a just entered “intermediate” level player.....would I be able to hang with this course or wait till im more of an intermediate player first??? Thanks buddy!!!👍
#ThrowIRON #PlayMetal
@@jasonstallworth awesome!!! That was my thinking as well so im in...will sign up!! Thanks man👍💪🏻
@italiad1013 cool brother, and let me know if you have any questions! Always here to help 🤘

I have a 7 string playlist on my channel but nothing specific to doom metal
It definitely never hurts to expand...you'll gain more ideas and creativity from that
can you do death metal in standard tuning?
One thing to remember is there are NO rules in music. And when you think there are rules, break them! Create something new and original. 🤘
Another great lesson Jason. Do you cut your mids on the amp? Trying to r figure my amp settings and and my lows are great but almost too much. Keep it up.
Yeah dude, I pretty much always cut my mids to about 3.5 - 4. I've tried dialing in tones with boosted mids but just never cared for that sound.
That’s how they did it back in the day, but it sounds much better with the mids, IMO. I boost my mids and it sounds better In the mix
Mandatory mids is just modern metal propaganda. Plenty of death metal bands old and new have gotten away with great tones using scooped mids. Just depends on the amp I guess and like what pickups and speakers you got too
hai jason nice video tutorial to help me to dig learn riff classic death metal 90s my band playing style oldschool death metal 90s like morbid angel, deicide, cannibal corpse and cancer can you help make tutorial setting effect sound and setting amp sound classic oldschool death metal

I had a recent video where I share my tone settings here: ua-cam.com/video/I6Rcs1xnu-w/v-deo.html
Are you picking the single notes repeatly or just the open notes ? In riff's 1 and 2
Yes, those are alternate picked with a light palm mute.
@jasonstallworth are these riffs original or by other banfs
All original...I never play any covers (other than for my live acoustic shows)
Man what is the brand of guitar you are using? And is it a strat type or telecaster?
This is the LTD M-1000 Deluxe. I have a full video on it here: ua-cam.com/video/6puPdGfYGC8/v-deo.html
