  • It seems like my DJI Avata doesn't like cold temperatures. Still managed to sqeeze in a little session.

Had low voltage warning with DJI FPV when I put on a brand new battery yesterday (it was first flight with this secondary battery)
It was also pretty cold... Seems like that could be something to do with the cold ?!

After doing some research I found out cold conditions effect the battery's chemistry. It seems to help to keep the batterys warm before flight. I haven't tried it yet though.

Good video. I was flying my avata the other day when it was about -3 or -4 C and noticed a lot of power lag, especially against the wind and landed after a few minutes. Normally my batteries are at least room temperature before I fly in cold weather but I think these had been sitting in the cold truck for a while. I won’t try that again lol. I’ve mostly been flying the virtual flight app this past week.

After some research I found out that battery can have voltage drops when exposed to cold. Faster draining and less power!

@@_REMIE I live near Niagara Falls on the American side of the border so it gets pretty cold here and I knew the batteries would lag but thought that they’d warm up after a minute and perform fine. Nope. I’d say they were just as cold after five minutes of flying as they were before takeoff. It seems to me that the sweet spot on the Avata battery temperature wise is between 50-70 F. I was getting 14 minute acro flights back before the temps dropped below freezing. And what you said about the leaves… So true. I’ve been bashing through a lot of tree branches lately lol

Maybe it will help to wrap the battery in some kind of thermofoil when flying and warm up like you said. Like they do with car batterys sometimes. But probably will be a hustle to keep it snug during flight. 😅

Yeah I had slightly strange performance in the cold not long before sunset here in the UK yesterday. Today was a tiny amount warmer (+ was middle of the day) and it was less sketchy. But still a little bit odd when doing basic freestyle tricks that it can normally handle just fine.

Hmm very sensitive to temperates, lessons learned! Next time I'll try to keep my batterys warm, but I think they will cool down fast during flight.

@@_REMIE It’s the gap between packing them up and using them which is the problem if thats the root cause. They are warmed up whilst flying. Its a common thing with batteries and drone batteries, but I’ve noticed performance drop more on this quad than, lets say, Mavics.

Note that this is not only an avata problem. Every battery has issues when its cold. Even handys shut down sometimes when its too cold.
The avata is meant fpr 10-40 *C. Even the mavic series shouldnt be flown under 0C. Just a few bigger dji drones like the enterprise series, the matrice series have battery warming on board. They can fly up to -30 C . Pretty cracy.
In conclusion, cold temperatures slow down the chemical process in the betteries. Thats why you have voltage drop.
    Great flying 🙃

Thanks Christoph! Since I'm pretty new to the hobby I had to do some research. I found out it is indeed a common thing with batteries.
I'm used to pro grade photo cameras that will even go to -40°C or something. So I didn't expect the Avata to struggle with 5°C. Ofcourse the Avata requires a lot more power compared to a camera and the Avata isn't pro grade like you mentioned.
      I learned something this week!😄
