"Ted Cruz’s Texas senatorial campaign has sent hundreds of thousands of mailers seeking donations that are meant to look like official county summons, a high-ranking campaign official confirmed to Newsweek.
The brown envelopes read “SUMMONS ENCLOSED-OPEN IMMEDIATELY” in large black letters, and have a return address of “official county summons.”
While the letter inside the envelope was a donation form for the Cruz campaign, there was some fear that some voters might be confused by the mailer and believe that they were required by law to pay a fee."

I'm a retired mailman and have seen BS mail like this. They try to make it look super important to make you want to open it or you may get in trouble if you don't. When you get something like this in the mail, the first thing you MUST look at is in the top right corner where the postage usually is. That is how important it is or not. This one says STD, meaning it is Standard mail which is another word for "junk mail" and it is also presorted because there's probably a mailing list or something. This is a low life thing to do just to prey on the uninformed to take their money, but believe me I've seen worse than this.
At my doctor appointment yesterday, I decided to wear my Beto shirt and
was AMAZED at all the POSITIVE feedback I received! EVERY person in that office
not only complimented me on my shirt, but more importantly, said they were

According to Postal Inspectors, it isn't due to the Ted Cruz statement in the return address section. If that were left out, it would be, but because that last line is present, it's perfectly legal.

I wish they'd mentioned that Texas has a law againstcsending out fundraising mail that looks like a government mailing. Not all states do, and the federal government doesn't, but Texas does.

FYI, some advice from a mail carrier, look at the stamp first. If it says PRSTD or Presorted Standard, it's junk mail. Same with Non-Profit, also junk mail that the office is allowed to throw out if you no longer live at that address and it doesn't say Electronic Service Requested. I can't tell you how many letters I deliver that have those huge "warnings" on the front but are 3rd class mail. If it's actually important it will ALWAYS say First Class Mail on the stamp. If it's 3rd, then the sender fully expects you to throw it out and hence can't be bothered to pay the full stamp price. So look first to the stamp then look at the sender.
When you get older your eyesight starts to go I cannot read the small print without my glasses how low can they go?
