When are you covering the new Paper Boi album?
Skye! If there’s one album you should go back and review it’s Because of the Internet by Childish Gambino!
Second this
Absolutely beautiful album that didn’t get the respect it deserved when it came out. It aged magnificently
Classic album!
@@StudioScarecrowthe amount of people who called me crazy in December 2013 for saying it was a future classic that agree with me now is wild
@@otterdonnelly9959 its always the case for unconventionall music that has a deeper effort put in it
I know you consider the old version of the album "dead" but I encourage you to check out the full version of "Why Go To The Party". It's an incredibly personal track about his fathers passing and it was my favorite song on the original version of the album. An incredibly beautiful song that I'm very sad got cut down to only an interlude on the final album. Fortunately I still have the original saved to my phone so I can listen to it whenever I want but it's a shame that most people won't get to experience that track anymore.
avaa professor. you really made realize that Gambino's music since his first son's birth has all kinda been sort of about his children and his dreams for them to be free and understand how the world will interfere with that. i really wanna read that carribean discourse book now
This albums so good. Was an essential Covid album for me thats been given new meaning and appreciation with the fuller mixes (and my fuller life) in 2024. Hoping you enjoyed it Skye.
Avaa. I met Donald Glover at an Odd Future show in Austin. He was super down to earth and engaged and one of the smartest people I’ve ever spoken to in person.
I'm so sad that 32:22 was taken off, it was one of my favorites on the original release from the YEEZUS vibe. Also a bit sad "Why Go To The Party" got cut down. That said the whole project sounds a lot more complete, Sweet Thang and Final Church sound amazing on this remake/rerelease.
Even though I really like you prof. but when I first saw your review (which was Maps by Woods) first thing came to my mind was that guy from the Juneteenth episode 😂...
hey skye, dont feel bad about the comparisons to that guy. its art, theres no reason to feel guilty as a positive force.
Big fan of what you’re doing. Stay on the grind, but don’t burn yourself out either.
AVAA - New subscriber sticking around after the spectacular coverage of the spectacle that was Kendrick Lamar v Drake. Really appreciate the thoughtful analysis you share on each piece of work. The variety is equally impressive. Thanks for creating these videos, feels like a contemporary college course that is distributed in realtime with music and culture. Keep up the great work Craig Allen 🤙
Word, I got dragged in by the Aesop Rock review for ITS when I realized this guy was on a wave.
Idk if it just went over my head but I didn't get the impression they had sex in Psilocybe at all, just seemed like a very metaphorical description of a first time mushroom experience
AVAA
It's interesting to hear this philosophical analysis of the title of the album because originally people speculated 31520 was about Donald glover coming to terms with his father's death so he's probably leaning even more into that idea in this revision.
"HEY YA" Andre 3000
Fun song where context does not match the music.
AVAA Skye! When I was listening to the album I immediately heard the Life of Pablo similarity which made me excited, but the last few tracks really reminded me of Mr Morale. I was actually writing down how similar it felt to Mr Morale when he brought his daughter on and it felt similar.
Pixies has a lot of examples of danceable songs on serious topics. One really good album to see that on is Doolittle with tracks like Monkey Gone to Heaven and Wave of Mutilation. You should totally check that out if you want that similar idea in a 90's punk album!
Hey prof, i remember reading a social media post during the big beef of 2024 where a dad states we shouldnt let "them" do to our hip-hop what "they" did to his jazz. Would love a video dissecting this sentiment. With a little history of what in fact happened to jazz. Love your videos. Get that bag skye.
For a second, i thought you were actually the actor from the episode again…I’m so sorry. I loved that character though. He truly was trying to be respectful to Earn but unfortunately suffered from some blind spots.
I always love when you go over an album I know back to front, makes the videos much better! AVAA
Billy Jean is a dance song about how the baby ain't yours. Would Maury even have a career without it?
AVAA. I appreciate how self aware you are. But I think you’re good. You don’t ever come off patronizing or condescending. Your opinions seem like they come from a genuine love and enthusiasm for the culture. Keep doing your thing. Appreciate the insights
Billie Jean is actually a weird dance song because it’s about how the woman is not his baby’s mother. Also, smooth criminal is about a woman being attacked in her apartment but is a bit more obvious.
*looks at thumbnail text*
Well, it's official. I can say I've inspired a professor.
OMG I love your videos but you’re 100% the white guy from the Juneteenth Episode lmaoo
🤣 my exact reaction.... but atleast he understands the intricacies of race relation way better than that character who was a "well meaning" liberal alley
This guy is actually awesome though
AVAA the prof really did say "Please give me hello" in Korean 😂
AVAA, awesome atlanta reference and can't wait for the mach hommy review
AVAA as a new follower, I was going through your old reviews and I was surprised to see you've never reviewed a stormzy album (that I could find) might be something you'd vibe with. either way, I've been loving all the reviews so far
Love your honesty, humbleness and humour! AVAA and please do a Video of BotI or AmL or Atlanta from Childish...or ALL of them hahahaha
Keep it going and much Love from Vienna
or even better...Do a review of the Juneteeth Episode with the Awaken my Love Album in the Background lol
Man I would love to see a conversation with skye and FD signifier. FD called gambinos older stuff for incel rap
Don't let "being the white guy" be your identity, most people are here because we do value your view and input. You don't have to keep interrupting the points and video just to keep reminding us that you have an "outside perspective" like that's literally why I'm here in the first place
Yeah, I see what you mean. I’m trying to find the right balance.
Ludwig Göransson produced on every childish album and basically got his start with childish. Also Ludwig spazed on black panther too
Can't lie i was hesitant on subscribing over the last few weeks because you are white, but your Atlanta comment and awareness of how you could be perceived as that guy when reviewing these types of niche artist has earned (no pun) you a subscriber. Love the Roc Marci and Mach-Hommy review videos.
AVAA! Love hearing such a genuine and honest perspective
We patiently waiting for that MACH review !
I don’t know if you will read this comment, and I don’t know if you talk about this later in the video but PLEASE listen to 39.28. It is the complete version of why go to the party and I think it’s important that you hear the full song.
Hey Ya and Sittin on the Dock of the Bay are songs i listen to but I think are sort of deceptively catchy, also a lot of Paramores songs off After Laughter
AVAA. Please check out Arooj Aftab's new album, i would love to hear your thoughts. Also, great review. It's very easy to dismiss gambino's albums but this is another fantastic edition, the new music elavates the material that I already thought was pretty good
lmao the thumbnail is hilarious
I really enjoy listening to this man.
That’s a great description
AVAA ! New of Montreal album released - Lady On The Cusp. i think you would have a blast picking through it as it seems you have for the previous two of their albums
AVAA - another new sub like a lot of people from your coverage of the beef with Kendrick and Drake.
What makes your takes incredible are the humanity and the simcerity you have in the analyses you give. Along with the true respect to the music, the culture and the art.
You might already know. But Cole, on Dissect has beautiful views on major hip hop pieces. You'd love em! And it's with the respect and appreciation for the art, and the culture.
7:45 YES WE NEED A LANDO MOVIE THANK YOU!
I think you would have loved the first release of this album. Gambino kinda watered it down for me, but your words lovely as always!
I met Donald Glover! Sort of. At his last show (Austin City Limits 2019) he took selfies with a half dozen people in the crowd during his show, I was one of them :) I do in fact bring it up at every opportunity.
This video has sealed your fate as the white guy from the Atlanta juneteenth episode 😂
AVAA with Craig Allen, I'm one step closer to assembling the infinity stones of deepcut video references in a comment.
AVAA LETS GOOOOO
Atlanta is such a good show. Donald Glover is such an amazing artist
I am glad I am not the only one who heard the Prince resemblance
Invisible Man. Really great.
avaa, thank you Craig
I know you've done Dave Pyschodrama, have you looked at Dave "We all alone in this together"? Great album that reminds me a lot of Kendrick
Prison not Jail, jail is temporary, Prison is where you stay (Until, maybe)
AVAA
Let me put you on some game. I know you kind of stick to what you like... So you should revisit Canibus dude. Yeah he's not exactly current events, but he's actually unique. Like a SciFi Thriller Rakim, bro's a nerd of the highest caliber. Poet Laureate Infinity, Rip the Jacker.
There is also a tie-in with beefing in rap, as his beef with LL Cool J and then Eminem really stalled out his trajectory.
I KNOW you'll give him his flowers, I just wanna see how many 😊
I'll give you a hint. His name is a Latin pun that's at least a triple entendre. The ablative/dative plural of canis. 😎🤗
Interesting
Plsssss analyze Donald Glovers Lithonia
SUR le pont d'avignon, l'on y danse, l'on y danse......
You understand Earn! 😂
I find Trap Lore Ross to be offering a amazing service to the general public. He’s peeling back the layers behind the music that people make, the areas they live in and the years and sometimes decades long issues that come from these areas. He’s also opening up the doors to different cultures for people. I’m American who listens to a LOT of UK rap and UK drill. I first started listening to it hearing the gang OFB and the multiple artists that come from OFB. I knew they had opps and that there was a history there but I did not know anything about it. Trap Lore Ross video about OFB and then his No Jumper video where he actually interviewed OFB members helped me understand them so much more. Recently his 4 hour documentary on Suspect a UK drill rapper whos in prison for 20+ years told me so much about Suspect that I hadn’t known previously. I’ve listened to all of his music and really enjoy it and I knew some stuff before but this documentary showed me a LOT I hadn’t seen before.
NO
Nah
Best song is actually human nature. Grasps atavista or atavism of a diaspora quite well. aside from that most of them are incredible tracks like sweet thang, but the original versions are all better.
Prof. Skye! Please link me to your take on trap lore Ross. I was a fan of a lot of his earlier content but I have sort of gotten sick of his “caring” analysis of gang violence though music. It seems like he just makes exploitative content about incredibly serious topics now while pretending to offer a solution via reporting. It was fun when he mocked Rick Ross for letting 50 cent make a cartoon dissing him but I dislike 5 hour documentaries about ongoing gang wars captured through social media posts.
Not looking for beef between you two (well maybe a little) but I’d love to hear your opinion on the guy and his channel.
Don’t know how to link it, but look for “Foreign man in a foreign land” channel and watch “commmentary” video with Fantano in thumbnail
You have to review because of the internet
Que?
Please react to macklemore Hind's hall
AVAA. I really didn’t enjoy the album. Frankly, I thought it was kind of boring. My main gripe with it is that so many songs on the album just go on for too long and feel they should be cut out sooner.
(this comment was made by with only one listen of the entire album)
10:24 like who
Check out Guru's Jazzmataz Vol.1
AVAA BROTHER
AVAA🙏🙏🙏
#madeinusa
I'm pretty sure it is not a good thing to be compared to Craig the atlanta white guy??
AVAA
Don't ever mention this dude with Prince ever in your life. This dude is an actor first and foremost. This shit is an act
Relax.
Prince does acts too, he has some nice chops here and there, Calm down 😂
@@tocide Prince was a man, being Prince. Donald Glover is an actor. Why you think he don't like Drake? 🪞
@@BraMoore ur just trying to find a reason to put him down, if i did the same for Prince you would act like me right now. Prince as an artist knows his real identity is a performance as well, it's a branding identity and smart people recognizes that. Entertainment is entertainment and sometimes having a persona is a part of human nature in front of a massive crowd. Prince and Childish are both petty when it comes to their art and showmanship
AVAA! Just in case you don’t know, Ludwig Göransson and Childish Gambino kickstarted each other’s music career together. They met each other in the TV show Community and share their music to each other.
woah I had no idea about this! And im a HUGE Ludwig Göransson fan. Awesome to know that him and Gambino have history!
@@fraydizs7302 Ludwig is the guitarist for every Gambino show! (At least until Ludwig start getting too busy with his own career)
AVAA
31:00 I think this entire album is Donald talking to his kids
This video got you another subscriber…. Something genuine, and yes, quite frankly likable, comes through the screen. I found you cause of the Big Beef, but I stayed for the bubbling humanity and introspective takes on rap music. Teach on! (I’m learning something… for real real).
Childish Gambino does indeed know how to find weird times to dance. AVAA!
AVAA. I kinda have a bad taste in my mouth from 4 years ago: *No roll out, No Art, no Song Titles* He just decided to retire like Logic (or if you prefer Miyazaki)
It only hurts because I think he's a genius throwing out Art the way Netflix/App dump excellent shows in the cultural abyss through Binging.
AVAA and the obvious answer to your question is Hey Ya by Outkast :)
Little Foot Big Foot and Not Like Us are the songs of the summer
i discovered your stuff via the kendrick/drake beef and loved your past videos but was bummed to see no Childish Gambino so i'm fuckin hyped for this one
my prayers were answered
AVAA! professor we wanna hear your thoughts on that new Mach-Hommy album too!
Day 302 of Asking you to Review Achilles Come Down by Gang of Youth
I didn't even know that was you 😂😂😂. You acted really well in that, especially knowing acting isnt your main job.
I interpret “Why go to the party” as being about his late father and the party is… heavenly, let’s say
Wait, Donald is mad with Rian Jonhson for what? Where this came from?
I’d love to a see a reaction video from the subject of these video essays.
Unacknowledged genius ain’t no picnic either lol
Keep up the excellent work
Wow, thank you so much for the support
The original is the superior version imo
Aava! I hope you review the new Beth Gibbons album
Happy Haitian flag day…….hey professor Mach hommy dropped yesterday.
AVAA Skye! Are you going to listen to Rapsody's new album, Please Don't Cry? It's amazing!
Love to see it Craig 😂😂keep up the amazing analysis. ❤
AVAA
Avaa Craig

Great review, Professor. You’re wrong about Sweet Thang, though, it’s Final Church.
i just saw his video about Azra, i was surprised that his channel doesn't have anything about Galija, is a Yugoslavia band as good as Azra as well. and i was surprised "balkan" wasnt played on that video.
