It's called a pack howitzer because it was designed to be able to break down and be carried by pack animals.
Thank you for posting this gem! I was a Marine artilleryman on the M198 and M777 and did every job on the guns up to Section Chief and Guns Platoon Sergeant. It's amazing how the fundamentals of artillery have been so constant. The commands and even some of the equipment are virtually unchanged after all these years. It's hard to put into words how much I enjoyed watching this video!

I think I would have come up with some shortcuts.
Like putting the gun on a small cargo trailer. With the gun ready for fire.
The ammo would be pre- made with charges marked on the brass.
Then stored in an munitions box.
That way you only need to drop the support legs on the trailer. Then aim the damn thing.
With the same amount of personal we fired the 175 mm M110 self propelled gun....not all by hand...
Could you disassemble it and carry on mules though LOL?
The M110 self-propelled was a 8" howitzer, the M107was the 175mm gun!
battery size has changed a battery is 6 guns now! we need to bring this little turd back it'd be good for paratroopers and special forces use!! this is the first i've found on any part of firing beyond the loading you wouldn't know where a person can find video on how the aiming directions from the fire direction center are determined by chance?

There were several sniper checks of the executive if they had ben in combat.
What are all of the commands that are being stated? Specifically, what are the firing commands? Starting in the video at 15:09 mins. It is hard to hear them in the video, and closed captioning doesn't translate it correctly.
first they say what kind of round to fire, what fuse delay etc, then they say how much to turn the gun left or right, then they say the quadrant, then they say fire.

How do they defend an artillery convoy like that from air attack?
Most had an Anti Air support team with them.. And they carried .50 caliber machine guns with them..

Is this the same 75mm French 1897 used by the allied in ww1?
No that's a different piece which was used on various platforms like the M3 Halftrack in updated form and which led to the early American long barrel 75s which in turn led to the US own design 75s, 105s and so on. Their Long Tom can also trace its lineage back to the WW 1 era French 105.
no different gun entirely this one was designed for mountain warfare and paratrooper use mainly as you can tell by the name pack howitzer it was designed to taken down to the point where 6 pack horses/mules could carry it the thing only weighed 350 pounds and had a range of 5450 yards where the frog 75 was a pure towed artillery piece and was close to a ton in weight and had a range of around 7500 yards due to a longer barrel!
Yes and No, this gun used the same shell as the m1897 but the gun itself was all new. Please note the same round was also used in the 75mm M3 Grant and M4 Sherman tanks of WWII, with the M4 used a modified breech from the M1897 to better be used in the M4 turret.
Makes me cringe every time I see someone other than the chef pull the remaining powder charge. Other than that it’s amazing how little artillery has changed. Now there’s more aiming points we us like distant AP, Saftey Circle and Calameter.
