According to a website that I can't seem to find any more, the reason 1000 were produced but only 100 were ever released was because they had Nobuo Uematsu himself listen to each of them and purposely only select the 100 best sounding ones. I saw an authentic one of these for $50,000 USD on ebay.
Interesting note about Nobuo Uematsu. Would make sense if he selected the 100 best sounding ones. But if Sankyo produced them, sounded them all be uniformly. Thanks
They’ve just announced the pre-orders of a re-release, on Square Enix Japan, a few days ago. Looks like the same music box, but the cover is decorated. Should be out in October 2024. Since they don’t provide sound samples, hard to know if they rearranged the melody slightly.
These were on sale for a very limited time in 2001. I believe only 50-100 of these left the Sankyo factory as the company (Squaresoft) was bought out by Square-Enix which you are probably familiar with. You cannot buy this anywhere because no store has it, and no one is willing to part with theirs. Please read video description. Thanks for watching.

Be careful if you're serious in buying one. The bootlegs are not worth more than $1000 in my opinion as getting "any" type of music box made from Sanyo in this model is around $900 US. If you don't care if the music box is official or not then it's the next best thing to owning the real one (the bootlegs on eBay).

So much so he was nicknamed the "father of songs"~ Thus, since the music box maker is also named "Orpheus" it makes sense that the sound would be so beautiful~ ^w^ Since Orpheus pre-dates such stories as the Round Table, I would think he counts as a part of ancient history, right? :3

Took me literal years of diligently searching every day to find it.
The only music box I own is yesterday by the Beatles, that song held a small place in my heart for childhood reasons. ANyway I wish to own a game or anime music box some day, its one of my dreams/quests ^^ This is one of my favourite themes. I think its beautiful!
I think that is one of my favorite parts of the whole franchise. It lends a level of the story that is other wise inaccessible. Funnily, even this music box's manufacturer "Orpheus" explains it's beauty perfectly~ I think even Orpheus himself would have had a challenge to match the beauty of such a box~
