How To Shoot Video With a DSLR For Beginners PT 1
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 жов 2013
- To make a video with a DSLR camera you need some additional skills to those for shooting stills. There are some camera settings unique to video and some of them you wouldn't normally use.
In how to shoot video with a DSLR for beginners we'll show you how to think about the film you're making. This is called production and it involves about planning the shots in advance. I'm not suggesting a major shooting schedule but give a little thought to what you're doing. Think about how your video clips will fit together when you edit them.
I hope you find this useful...

I recently switched from practising photography to learning video and after trolling so many video tutorial sites i remembered how awesome mike browne was in helping me understand photography. I type in Mike brown video dslr and lo and behold there he is explaining everything I wanted perfectly and clearly in 20 mins. Thank you Mike for your genius videos
Thanks Jungli. I haven't done much about DSLR video and this is mostly about production, how to tell the story in moving pics. happy it helped - MIKE
Señor Browne usted es muy buen MAESTRO. Straight to the point, pure and simple GRACIAS.
Thank you Pablo Ferrer
A lot of work went into putting this together... very nice of you to do this... I continue to learn from so many places , you included.. thank you.
Mike you are a national treasure with your videos !!! Keep the DSLR Video series coming. Excellent work all round ! Greetings and best wishes from Bonnie Scotland !
This is the best tutorial in UA-cam, I love how you showed how Not to do it and then the correct way to do it. You gained a new subscriber mate 👍
thank you for subscribing elcapix, please do share it too so we can make more - Melissa pp Mike
Mike Browne Is over Ig and Twitter already 👍
I came across this video after looking at many others. The others invariably go straight to "settings" and leave it at that. You are so right when you say that it's a different mindset needed than when shooting stills. As a beginner at video with my DSLR I really appreciate you taking the time to demonstrate that mindset by walking me through the making of your short demo video. Very nicely done...thank you!
Hi Mike
This is one of the best video tutorials I have ever seen.
Most spend to much time on all the technical settings.
You actually show how to make a good video.
I like your on screen style as well, very casual and laid back.
Thanks Digmen1, Glad your enjoying my videos - MIKE :-)
Absolutely. The world is moving fast as i have things to learn and experiment with about DSLR video before making more films. I've been a TV camera man for BBC and ITV but always used a dedicated film camera. Whilst the production process is the same shooting with DSLRs is very different..
Thank you , superb tutorial on video composition . I'm a seasoned photographer but using the video capability of my Canon DSLR will be a new venture . First assignment tomorrow is a Police Academy graduation , and while I know what settings to use , I find this video on how to make videos more interesting a really good find tonight ! Thank you again .

Hey thanks machia0705 - happy to help - MIKE
As per normal an excellent video. I've been using one of my DSLR's for video for about 2 years now and loving it. Less hassle in the long run from carrying a larger video cam about. Specialy love the diting part of videoing.
Absolutely. Phones are great sound recorders and i have a converter cable to capture sound on my iPhone. I'll say more about sound in another dedicated video.
This is the first video I have watched that did't require all kinds of additional/semi pro video equipment. I just want to make a few nice clips here and there when I'm out shooting still shots. Thank you! Well done.
You're welcome +phoozchic - MIKE
Really helpful. I have a pro camera that is far smarter than me and have been taking stills for 3 years and wanted to try video. Absolutely perfect place to start was your video! Thanks.
thank you blueboy - Melissa pp Mike
Okay I give up, this is PT 1... where is PT 2?!!! BTW great job with this. I saw this video a while back and have been searching for it for weeks now. Glad I found it again, it is safely saved this time. :)
Thank you +Javaman92 Sorry, I don't think we made a pt2. Best way to find your way around my vids is on my site. They're all there and categorised and searchable. Have alook and see what you think - MIKE

Fantastic tutorial... Just what I need to start my video making journey. Thank you
thank you +How To Make A Video wish you all the best and have fun on the journey! - Melissa pp Mike
Thanks for this. Very informative. Just starting to explore the video capabilities of my kit. Your style of delivery is engaging and kept me watching through to the end.
thank you Robert, glad you find helpful - Melissa pp Mike
The videos keep getting better and better. One day I have to plan a vacation to the UK and take Mike to lunch for all the great teaching in his videos. lol
Thank you. I'll be making more DSLR video videos but have to learn more about the technical camera issues myself first. Despite having been a TV camera man we don't shoot our videos with a DSLR.
I have learned so much in a short time. Your explanations are easy to understand and that is important. I also like that you are just teaching us, but not trying to steer towards any particular type of equipment. Oh you mention what you use and how good it is, but that is normal.
Glad to see you back, I have missed your informative tutorials for us.
Brilliant, Mike, your Video tutorial(s) come just when I started to play with the previously ignored Video functionality of my DSLR in order to capture my daughter's first tries of solid foods. Hilarious, I can tell you. The faces she makes when tasting mashed potatoes for the very first time in her life! Imagine being able to watch yourself as a 5 month old entering the world of taste!
Hello Mike, thanks for a good lesson. I'm just getting into video and your "How To" is just what I need.
I love the way you took time to go in the details. I used to take videos walking around and now you've opened my eyed to all the possibilities and a work around with manual shutter speed before it was all confusing to me. Thanks Mike.
Really go workflow - for those of us just starting out - to put it all in context of having to tell a story much MUCH longer than a single image (and how many shooter failed to tell a story with just one shot!)
Having picked up my Nikon after a ten year lay-off (since the darkroom days were we had to guess on film) and a THIRTY year lay-off since I put down the pen in High School (not wanting to risk a hand-to-mouth existing as s playwright/director/actor) I have realized the wonders of the digital world to make long forgotten dreams come alive again...not just the efficiency of the word processing neatness of a keyboard, mouse and Life Experience to deepen adolescent mysteries... but having to face the reality that - without a serious social media campaign - you could waste your time trying to convince other people (who spent their lives doing this stuff) they the imagination and creativity only ages like fine wine with age and Other Roads Less travelled. Now those Nikkor leases can be used again - not to capture life in Bali or my parents Eastern Europe freed from communism - but to visualize stories that hereto have had to rely on the spoken word and some brilliant actors. It all comes together in the Last Act with the blessing of technology and immortality.
What a great comment @George Rady. Love it... MIKE
I have been a bit too scared to get started with video as it seemed a bit too intimidating on my DSLR but this video has really helped put that to rest. Thanks very much!
Thank you so much. I had bits and pieces of shooting video with DSLR and you tied it together in one sequence that was simple and easy to follow.
My pleasure JDTV66 - I'll be making more DSLR video films when i get a video DSLR of my own... (We shoot these on a Sony EX1)
Thank you so much for the video lesson. I have to say, I have learned more in your video than I did in one whole semester in a Digital Video class from my college. Super information and presented so I can understand it, Thanks Mike !
Thanks +Bryon Tapp - MIKE
Thanks for the insights! I have been doing still since the late 70s but never video as the results have been really bad. Now I'm inspired and will include some videos on my channel - provided I get it right! Thanks a lot!
Great video, showing simple stuff that video photographers would know by nature, but most folks would overlook..
thank you! please do like, subscribed and share so we can make more videos! - Melissa pp Mike
I watch many of your videos. Always very well explained. Thank You.
Liked it immensely, made easy to understand . Would certainly like to see more of these
So many good tips in this video. The "lights came on" when you mentioned letting the video run after you've done any narrating in case you don't want the narration in the finished product. I have subscribed!
Thanks Rick.. MIKE
I want to start shooting video. and this was great quality lesson. thank you for sharing
Thank you p mcd Please help me make more complimentary videos by sharing them on forums, Facebook etc..
It's good to see you back, Mike. I'm fairly new to photography and have to say your tutorials are excellent. I have learned so much from studying them so my thanks go to you for the entertaining and informative way you that you present them.
I would like to see more tutorials on making videos. I've never used the facility but it's something I'd like to have a go at. Thanks again for the great tutorials.
Thank you, that was very useful. I've found bits and pieces on UA-cam before but this is the first video that covers most of my beginners questions.
Just off to check what else you've done!
Thank you Dave Perris we are glad you found it useful - MELISSA FOX ( for Mike ) :)
Mike, everything you explain is so understandable!
Just moving into videoing wildlife - found this very helpful in trying to get into a "videoing" mindset-many thanks. I will look for more videoing content on your channel now😊
Thanks @Mike Holgate. I'm sorry but I decided not to do much about video and stick to stills, mostly because i don't use a DSLR for it, I use a video camera... MIKE :-/
Many thanks for all your easy to understand videos Mike. I have gained lot of useful knowledge from them and your great way of presentation. As a complete amateur in this field I am truly inspired to get a lot more from photography now. Look forward to more great content.
Thank you Ian Mather Please help me make more videos by sharing them with other photographers on forums, social media etc... Thanks :-)
I am glad I found this video I have been curious about starting to shoot video with my DSLRs but this was very informative!
Very eye opening. More videos on shooting video please.
Very very informative video you have done, Mike! Keep up the good work!
Thanks Pat Chan glad to help. Please help me make more by sharing my vids, clicking in some likes etc....
Good stuff, you touched on lots of areas that can easily be forgotten when going from pics to videos.
Yes Mike. More of this please. Thanks.
This is easily the best tutorial I've seen!
Wow thank you +Marty Timm - please help me make more like it by sharing my vids around... Thanks again - MIKE
Hi Mike, I really enjoy watching your video's as they are very informative. I have learnt a lot especially with this video and have applied the same principle while filming my son and the dog around our local pond. Please follow up with a part two. Thanks, Jane.
Thank you Jane Johnson - I'll see what I can do....
Very, very well done and informative, all without talking over music as so many other UA-camrs feel they must do for some damn reason.
👍🙏
Ive just upgraded to the nikon D7100 mike and this is what i want to learn is how to film well using my new camera. Thanks for this
Great Video Mike. Thanks for all the info. Look forward to seeing more.
No worries Christoph. More video videos will be coming ....
This is great and the missing link I needed. Thanks a lot.
Thank you - MIKE
inspiring to me as I really am just on the cusp of learning to do video with a brand new 6D. Cheers and Thanks.
Thank you very much. Very very helpfull for a begginer like me. I would love to learn more, mostly amature and practical staff.
As always, top-notch instructional video - and it's free! Thanks again, Mr. Mike.
Very nice. I learned a lot. I'd love to see more.
thank you +Jonathon Hurley - MELISSA ( for MIke )
This is excellent, great content for a photographer looking to get into video. Thanks for sharing, any chance of more in this series? Your presentation style is spot on, and a British accent as well, hooray!
Thanks Anthony. I'm sorry but it's unlikely I'll make more vids about video with DSLR. I find them very fiddly and use dedicated video cameras. Sony PXW-X70 and Sony EX1R. - MIKE :-/
Shame, as I'm sure they'd be great! Totally understand though, I bought a loupe to attach to the rear screen and it's a bit of a 'faff to take on and off, I'm determined to give it a go though! Thanks again, your 'part 1' is a great starting point.
absolutely love you mike, always great videos, really clear. big fan
You are such a good teacher. Thank you for this.
thank you +Colleen Harris - Melissa pp Mike
Mike, your video was so nicely put together for beginners like us.. l am just getting into this video shooting world with a dslr and your video was very helpful.. thanks for your effort and time !
thank you! - Melissa pp Mike
Thanks Mike, Great tutorial, I'm just getting into shooting videos. This is a great start.
Thank you Vizz Photography
Love this video teaching.
Excellent video, very easy to listen to your explanation, makes life a lot easier learning about filming with my DSLR. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!... MIKE 🙏😊
It's funny, this is like a two-fold class. We can watch your examples as you demonstrate on screen, but we can also pay attention to the elements you employed making this video. Nice work.
thank you for the kind words Ryan! -Melissa pp Mike
I shoot a lot of video also, but it is always nice to hear others take on a subject.
Very helpful! I'm looking to start shooting product reviews for UA-cam. I have a Canon t5i and hope to try out some of your ideas with that camera. I realize that shooting with a DSLR can be a great experience but for the novice it can be very intimidating. So many settings and things to learn. I just find this crazy because I can just toss my GoPro on my chest and record some nice video when I mountain bike. That being said I totally realize that this is a night and day type of video recording but man, all these stops and seconds things you are talking about kind of make my head spin! I hope I can learn more from your channel and others here on UA-cam. Good stuff and thank you again!
thank you +Gene Arnold for the kind words. Melissa ( for Mike )
Great video, I learn much. Yes, please post more on DSLR videos. Thank you.
Great video Mike, good tips as usual, thanks!
And yes, more videos on 'video' would be very welcome.
I discovered your channel and site about 2 weeks ago, and have been watching your great videos back to back. Your advice is easy to understand, your tips are achievable and your help has so far been invaluable!
Thank you for spending your time to create and upload these free tutorials and share your knowledge and experience.
Chris
Chris Kennedy happy they helped. Please help me make more free vids by ‘Liking’ them and sharing them with other photographers on forums, Facebook etc .... It might be easier to find your way around my vids on my website at www.photographycourses.biz/videos
Will do Mike Browne.
Thanks again and please keep up the great work!!
i love it! Please really consider doing more of these. Thanks
you're the man mike, very informative and truly helpful.
Thank you, please do share it too so we can make more - Melissa pp Mike
Very nice video very well explained. Something I managed to get for my camera is a variable Neutral density filter. It looks rather like a polariser but the twist adjusts the density. Very useful for long lens work
hi mike,
just like to let you know that, especcially while filming wildlife you can go over the 5oth second. for exmple i was filming in wales and i used 3000 as my shutter and f2.8 :)
Thank you from nz. You are a wonderful teacher Mike, exactly what I was looking for.
Hope one day we will see you back doing this, lol. 👍🌏👍
Thanks for the tips. Very helpful
No worries wildcard749 - MIKE
Since you mentioned the need for the shutter speed to be half the film rate. I think the reason goes back to the days when a film camera took 24 picture per second. The maximum shutter time in theory could be 1/24 second. In practice it takes time to move the next piece of film into position and settle it before taking the next shot. So the actual exposure has to be shorter than this. Some camera's had a control known as shutter angle which give some control over the actual length of exposure. With modern camera, electronics been very fast it is possible to use a wider range. But the film look is often the 180 Deg shutter angle one 1/48 second. You can shoot with different shutter times but it does not look like film.
Thanks for sharing that Mark. Though I shot stills on film, I only worked in TV filming with digital and hadn't thought about time for the film to transport and settle still before the next exposure. Amazing pieces of equipment those old motion film cameras.. MIKE
My experience of video come from working in the electronics design industry.
I am very new to actual film making.
It is good to see video's that explained things in such a clear way.
Please keep up the good work :)
Excellent training video. Well done and very helpful.
Great video. Thanx for the tips
Very useful! Your videos help me alot. Thank you very much!
Great video for beginners like me. Been shooting videos for awhile with a handheld camera but DSLR's a bit different. Thanks for this, Keep up the good work. God Bless!
Thanks marlon luistro I don't usually shoot video with a DSLR because they're fiddly and difficult to use without a DSLR video rig. But you can get some beautiful video imagery with a DSLR which you can't with a dedicated camera. We use a Sony EX1R 99.9% of the time...
I'm working on it. There are the monthly one day workshops I run on the Dorset / Hampshire coast. Dates and booking available from now to next autumn on the website. Germany, Lanzarote and Scotland coming soon.
Great tutorial! Learned so much as a DSLR beginner! Would love to see more video tutorials!
Thank you +Milan. H I have to confess I rarely shoot video with a DSLR and haven't make more vids about it. Might make more in the future some day. All my vids are currently shot on a Sony EX1R or Sony PXW-X70 because they are much easier for following live action and professional sound can be laid into the video tracks. - MIKE
Thank you very much for the tip! I look forward to new updates and will learn photograhpy from your amazing tutorials at the same time!
Thanks for these great tips. I'm just in the process of switching to DSLR for video making - There's a lot to learn and this helped a lot.
Thank you Mike, i have learnt alot and i ma still learning. i am thankful sir
really good video. great tips. I'm looking forward to the next part. thanks
Mike your the best teacher on here. Happy Thanksgiving
Thanks Sam. Hope you had a good one... MIKE 😊
Very informative and easy to understand. Perhaps part 2 could show how you edited the video in post production?
Mike ,
I really love what you did in this video !
Happy New Year !
Thanks!
Thanks +Larry Tam Happy new year to you too - MIKE
Thanks Mike very informative and greetings from Down Under everyone.
Great video; very well explained, it makes me remember my beginning shooting video, long time ago! I should have liked to have these teachings.
I liked your video very much. Thanks.
Happy to have helped and glad you liked it José Marqués :-)
Nice one Mike.
i was thinking about this place the other day and couldnt remember where it was and what it was called the last time i visited that pond was when i was round about 6 or so when we had snow fantastic little place thanks to you i now know where this little beauty sits in the new forest 15 to 20 minute drive from my house. great tutorial theres so much more to filming than point press record and done lol wish i had a camera id love to do this kind of stuff i love being creative but unable too do so
This is great! Mike, I have watched just about all of your photography videos and I absolutely love them, learned alot! i recently wanted to learn about doing video with my DSLR, I first went and checked your channel. Unfortunately , I didn't find any videos. The following week I got the email saying you added this new video to yiur channel! I loveb
Thank you so much, Mr. Mike. Brand new to this and already heavily invested even though I haven't taken the products out of the bag. Have the music - now on to the video!
Yeah I have to say... I'm new to photography and have watched a lot of different people on youtube. Mike is hands down my favorite. Not sure what it is.... maybe the accent :) Keep em coming Mike... and if you ever find yourself in Texas... let me know... beer is on me.. :)
Very basic but covered a lot of info for beginner like me. Thanks.
10:28 "Focusing. You can't autofocus when you're videoing". Of course that's all changed in the 3½ years since this video.
(At least the Dual Pixel system of the Canon 70D and later models works just beautifully!)
BTW. I like your imitation of wind noise!
thanks for your video, im a neophyte so some of the techincal terms you used i didnt understand but it was very easy to watch
More of this! Fantastic as always!
Thank you
Hi Mike
Thanks for a lovely and informative video capturing with DSLR
Another great vid. Would love to see more on this subject.
Thanks Rafe - Though I've been making films for years and have worked as a TV camera man I have quite a bit to learn about the technicalities of DSLR video myself. (I use dedicated HD video cameras) When I know more I'll make some films...
Thank you. There is a difference in footage for two reasons. the D300s is quite old now and costs under £1000. Our video camera is a dedicated broadcast camera costing £6000. But did you watch and compare the footage in the edited sample? The individual shots are without sharpening or contrast but the edited version is with it added in post..
hey mike. always looking forward to your videos. you provide good information for free and you care more than most teachers.
