I will add how nice this is looking. The raised beds are nice and your stone entrance came out very nice. My second suggestion in addition to my response to the urn and birdbath is to add two matching evergreens in the front - one on each side - in those cleared areas you already made. Perhaps boxwoods or whatever your preference. Evergreens are so important for winter interest and hardscapes. And like you mentioned, they rest your eye with all the color of your flowers. Containers would just add more hardscape.
I thought the same thing about the two cleared areas - some type of evergreen matching to flank the area. Keep the busyness of the colors down but leave a nice winter interest.
The stones look great! Definitely adds to the area! I think that the terracotta pot may look better in your landscape...I think because it is directly behind the birdbath you can no longer see the outline of the Birdbath.
I agree - maybe put the pot out in the landscape. The older I get I realize how hard I used to work. Can’t do it now, or maybe a better word is “won’t “. 😀
I thought the same thing. I think it's just because it's now behind the bird bath. I think it would look fine to have that spot be empty. Or perhaps one of those birds houses that's on a tall post so it would be skinny. But that may look like too much as well. Edit: Actually, looking at it again, if it were my space I'd likely remove the pot and put the fountain in its place. If you're growing something up the trellis I think it might look kind of crowded. I don't like having to brush up against plants and it looks like it kind of necks down the entrance. Also, i love the pavers there. Makes me realize it doesn't take a large patio to make little places to sit and enjoy
Good morning! Great job, your patio looks absolutely wonderful and will bring many years of enjoyment. TERRACOTTA POT IDEA: in my eyes this pot looks too new, it does seem to require more of a soft patina of the well loved English garden you are going for. So, instead of painting I suggest you AGE the pot using garden lime, which will change the orange to a beautiful aged soft white. There’s a great “how to” with pictures I found on the internet - not sure if I’m able to paste links in the comment here, but google “how to age terra cotta pots” and look for the blog “my 100 year old home”. I also suggest switching out the plant in the pot - maybe something pyramidal in shape, or a topiary? Perhaps a bamboo tent trellis? Another beautiful obelisk? Something else to ponder 😊
The patio is charming. I think I would paint the planter too. Maybe a darker terracotta , green or plum and a matte finish. It would blend in. Grace is such a momma girl. I love dogs. I have two myself that are beside me wherever I am.
Wow. Looks great. Thanks for showing us how it's done. I like the big pot as a center point to start the exploration around the space. The birdbath is so lovely, I think it needs a space of its own. If the pot is terra cotta, remember painting it will change the porous nature of the clay. But if its plastic, no problem. If it's terra cotta, I like the previous suggestion of aging it with lime. I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos and seeing how this space changes.
I'm a huge fan of the sage you have planted at your garden entrance and I couldn't help but imagine it along the sides of your VERY pretty new patio as you were treating us to the finished look. Best part is you could probably divide what you already have. Leaving it mulched is a nice look too. Thanks for including us in your project - YAY for nice weather days at this time of the year. :)
I am a landscape designer. My opinion is to remove the birdbath. Its nice but not in this space. It detracts from the main focal point - the large urn. I love the scale of the urn and using it as a focal point is great.
I think I agree. The only other option would be to remove the large pot and bird bath and put a larger water feature where the big pot is. Both is definitely to much though.
@@jenniferwolford4646 a large urn in the middle is traditional in potagers. I think its perfect as long as its elevated if needed and level. It is the focal point when approaching and entering.
I agree with the comments about leaving and even elevating the urn but moving the bird bath. The size of the urn is good, the bird bath is sweet and needs its own space. I wouldn’t paint the urn, just fill it with a glorious array of plants. Although if you really want the color changed, go for cement gray.
It's beautiful. My personal opinion, those mulched beds will stay empty until your first trip to the garden store. You'll see a beautiful rose or some annual flowers, and won't be able to resist, 😄
It’s looking so good. If you paint the pot with primer and then there is a spray paint that looks like concrete, I believe it comes in different colors of concrete to match what you have. Also maybe just a row of something all green that would stay shorter like rosemary shape like a hedge would look nice on the outside of the beds? Hard work always pays off. I’m looking forward to getting out in my own beds. The older I get the more I dread those aches. My mother used to say, well it lets me know I’m still alive. 😂
Lovely Ok the problems with paint and terracotta. The pot is porous Hence the paint will eventually come off, Your beloved pot will be ruined Blessings
That looks great Danielle! I have been wanting to do a stone path for my flower garden and plant some creeping thyme or low growing sedum between the pavers, something that won’t need to be mowed or edged. I want it to look like it’s been there for a long time, kinda look sunken but not really. Awesome tip about getting it delivered. My back will thank me 😊
It looks great and I really enjoyed Grace’s cute nose. I would not paint the pot. I would go to a store and buy a new pot for that area and move the terracotta pot elsewhere. Painted pots somehow always look painted.
Hi Danielle, Fantastic work ! There are now Deroma graphite (washed out earthy tone) clay pots I bought at Home Depot. I’m wondering if that company is going to come out with larger sizes. I find the colour blends in so nicely with my pressure treated wooden deck. ❤🌸❤️🇨🇦
Your patio area looks fabulous! I love the freeform shape. I agree that having some bare mulch area around might be nice, but I like the idea of a pot on each left and right corner. Can't wait to see it when your cutting garden is in full-bloom!!
The patio looks awesome. If it were my space, I wouldn’t leave it with just mulch. I would plant a variety of hostas, or other foliage plants creating a slope up to the raised beds which we all know will be loaded with flowers come Spring. The green foliage would provide a bridge between the lawn and the flowerbeds, and also soften the edges of the stone.
Beautiful patio! Love the way you efficiently removed the sod. I would suggest covering the clay pot with ceramics, then elevating the pot on a stand or pedestal, making it taller than the fountain which will identify it as the focal point of the garden. Beautiful job and inspirational. Thanks for all the great and informative videos.
Linda Vater @potagerblog has several videos about aging and distressing Terra cotta pots - or really any pots. That pot does not bother my eye. Yes it stands out right now, but think forward even only 2 or 3 months. Ou might like the contrast. Good work! Thanks for showing your process and progress.
I’m very impressed that patio is perfect! I created a stone path last year I do know how rewarding this project ferls from sod removal to laying all those stones! Yes psint a gray on the pot!! Now just go sit and admire the scalloped area looks terrific !
I’m glad the weather really cooperated with you so you were able to do the “Groundwork”! It looks great! I can’t wait for you to complete the outdoor House like structure. You’ve begun to formalize it with that stone. I think low pots or plants at the front of your structure will draw your eye in an upward manner from the deck to the arbor/trellis. You’ve got great companions to keep you motivated. They both liked your new deck!
Love the stones, and really like the mulch around them. If you decide to add some low plants, you’ll need to leave room to stand when you’re harvesting flowers from the raised beds.
Hey Nicole, I I spray paint the pots with Krylon for outdoor use .I do however use several coats .I’ve always wanted to maybe try different shades of grey/ concrete colors then add that moss application to give an aged look. Loved todays video. I wasn’t sure about the stones at first but with Your “magic” touch … It Looks Great‼️ 8:36
I’ve been thinking of this type of project for yrs and finally thought this is the time to try it. Thank you for all the tips. You did a great job! I think shades of gray or matte black might look good on the pot. Can’t wait to see this area all planted up.
Beautiful! I'm envious of your ability to get outside and work. Even though it's 48 outside, my yard has 8 inches of snow on it, so my stone path will have to wait. I love the idea of 'resting your eye'. So important. Why dont you put some evergreens on the sides, either in a container or planted. Something woodsy, cedar possibly, birds would love it. I also think the birdbath could be moved elsewhere in your garden. The eye wants to pull in the pot/urn at the other end. I think there is paint that will age that, maybe even look like there is moss growing on it. If you wanted a more formal look, consider a stone paint. Then, put another evergreen in the urn/pot. My mind sees that pulling everything together, with a few places to rest the eye. It's going to be lovely, Danielle, whatever you decide to do!
Beautiful!! I love everything! I would probably either paint or stain the terracotta a darker color or even mosaic with stone tiles, and put in some boxwoods at the corners.. nice job!
The pavers look great! I think once your flower beds come in the terra cotta pot won’t stand out and bother you. I don’t think I’d worry about painting it. One thing I think would make a big, beautiful impact is staining your raised flower bed boards. I recently watched Garden Answers montage of raised garden beds, and the dark stained garden beds were stunning! It really adds so much depth and makes everything just beautiful. We were so taken by it we recently stained our backyard fence a dark color. It was a huge job but the results are well worth it. I’m sure what ever you do will be wonderful.
Looks really nice and I would also paint the large pot a concrete gray or even a little darker gray; I would had some small boxwood or dwarf spruce tree on either side and you can always add some tulips or other spring bulbs to welcome you to a new spring season of planting your raised beds;
I think it looks fabulous. I think the mulch with maybe adding pots later is a great idea. Thanks for the video- I will be working on a patio area this summer. I really like the pavers you are using!
This looks great! I’ve been putting off doing something similar, because I was concerned about doing it perfectly. This encourages me to just go for it. Thanks for sharing.
Nice job, Danielle! If you don't want to plant flowers in those spaces, perhaps a couple of black urns with nice topiary boxwood...even just round balls of boxwood. That will give you some structure.
Good day, I really like what you did there, I do think planters on either sides would be nice, I always look forward to your channel, enjoy the Super bowl party!
Your patio looks great! The chairs give it a relaxing look. The idea of pots on either side of the new patio sounds good. Some sort of foliage plant to cover the soil would be good, maybe a low growing sedum. There does need to be some quiet space in a garden.
Love the progress! For the terracotta pot you may want to try aging it with a mixture of garden lime and water. Just paint it on in layers. Affordable and looks great. Go Eagles!
Vinca minor (periwinkle ) ground cover would be pretty on the mulched sides. It would add a bit of color in the early Spring with its sweet purple flowers and would maintain a nice deep green color year round.
I love the patio and the shape you went with is beautiful!! The pot is throwing me off though, but the bird bath seems to small to be the focal, so I'm not sure.
Good morning 😊 I absolutely love this !!! The stone is beautiful 😻 I have always loved your gardens from the very beginning and love watching new spaces come together ❤ I personally love the terracotta pot !! I wonder once all the beautiful flowers are growing it might just blend in? Either way it is absolutely gorgeous ❤❤. Have a wonderful Super Bowl Sunday 🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈
This time of year is the best for putting down hard scape. Then by the time spring arrives, you can concentrate on garden bed plantings. I just layed out an additional pathway to my garden beds with similar patio stone. (I remove sod like you do!) It was tough because it’s on an incline so I had to lay some like steps going up. (next house I buy will have a level yard!) lol
Beautiful outline with the stone and that's not easy. I got the same stone to make a short walk from sidewalk to my greenhouse to the garden gate. I only had about 8 of those rocks and it took me a long time to figure out how they fit. I had to youtube it too!
looks great! almost like a flower. I laughed out loud when you made fun of your pants! lol. I could never look at myself on video I give you so much credit.
I love the look. I would check at the hardware store for a stone color spray paint for the pot or even the color of your chairs (more cohesive). They have much to choose from. Looking great!! Mom pants 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Removing sod by hand is a heck of a job in and of itself. So, admiring what you did there alone. I have these exact stones, a Lowe’s purchase, and have tried to lay them in a pattern that matches the pattern in the stones. I quickly gave up because they’re so darn heavy and cumbersome. I eventually moved them to make them a small footpath through a bed because between the lines on top, and the pattern of the shapes, it was impossible for me.
Nicely done! The patio area looks fabulous. I think the shape you created looks so good with the irregular stone and the edge it created. Some additions I would consider: Painting the terra cotta container black so it doesn’t stand out but remains as a shape in that space? You know how black gets lost in the landscape? Also you have a great opportunity to put small ground covers in this patio area. Any of those step ables would work. Lastly I can see upright evergreens in the corners to create that ‘walled in’ feeling that you mentioned. The shape of Graham Blandy Boxwood is what I picture there. I have had one in my garden for years and transplanted it once and it looks great. It will also go along with the English Garden look you like. Love your videos! I am a landscape designer that had to quit working during Covid. I have been learning about growing annuals for cutting to keep me busy and maybe turn into my next gig. Thanks for all your help and inspiration.
The patio is stunning and certainly does look like an old English cottage garden area. I would add sweet alyssum seeds to the mulched area and let them cover it. I have some along a sidewalk here in NJ and they grow so fast and bloom until Nov/Dec (with one cut back in September). It's low growing but holds down the weeds... AND my self seeds now (zone 7a). I'd love to know more details about how the stones are sold since they seem like a perfectly patterned puzzle once you figured out how they connect! (Delivery was worth the money! Great job, Danielle! ~ Stephanie
Whew! The patio looks wonderful. I don’t envy you all that hard work - my back could not handle it these days… ☹️ Regarding the borders, I think they are too small and would widen them as you suggested. Then I’d fill them with a limited palette of minor bulbs such as Grecian Windflowers (anemone blanda), all blue or blue and white, for instance, with a few clusters of small yellow narcissus. Over top of them, I’d plant a low-growing ground cover, maybe one of the ajugas; something that will not compete with the backdrop of the colorful cutting which will soon fill your flower boxes. I think a non-flowering lambs ear would be beautiful there but I think your climate is too wet for that to stay healthy. The only terra cotta experience I’ve ever had is freezing and thawing which cracks them in my z6b garden but I agree, it looks a bit out of place. At the outer corners of the beds, I’d try either a pair of evergreen topiaries or something narrow but not too tall such as fine line buckthorn.
i suggest dark charcoal stain for pot to compliment iron work and lounge chairs in background. would love to see wood bed frames stained also. adds elegance and drama ;) i used similiar stone from lowes 12 yrs ago. turned out fab. had to end up having it installed as ea piece was 33 pounds and i overestimated myself (getting older). i love the edges. i also did 2 straight paths and the edges were soft wavy cool. did haul many trips in pt cruiser tho. ;)
Be careful of making the area to busy. You want that visually restful. I think painting the terra cotta urn to be in the color palate of the new stone patio is great idea, doesn’t need to match just same color range, lighter, darker. It’s a perfect size for center focal point-put it where birdbath is. Put birdbath off to the side nestled in your flower beds but still in view and audible. The new stone patio is awesome. Fantastic job!!!
This is GREAT!!! Thought...is it possible to move pot closer to the chairs on the other side? More of the focal point for that sitting area. Not sure what all you are going to have in each raised bed, but you may not even see the pot.
Omgosh! That stone patio is beautiful, Danielle! I love the pattern u ended up with. It's irregular yet balanced! Love the shape. ❤️
I will add how nice this is looking. The raised beds are nice and your stone entrance came out very nice. My second suggestion in addition to my response to the urn and birdbath is to add two matching evergreens in the front - one on each side - in those cleared areas you already made. Ok the problems with paint and terracotta.
The pot is porous
Hence the paint will eventually come off,

Ps
If you actually get a Product that will adhere
The pot will crack
Because of the lack of ability to loose the moisture contained in the terracotta.

Vinca minor (periwinkle ) ground cover would be pretty on the mulched sides. It would add a bit of color in the early Spring with its sweet purple flowers and would maintain a nice deep green color year round.
Wow what a transformation, it looks beautiful.
We just used these same pavers to make a patio near our garden as well!!
I love the patio and the shape you went with is beautiful!! The pot is throwing me off though, but the bird bath seems to small to be the focal, so I'm not sure.
think you do a really beautiful design, it looks very natural. I would live with the two sides barren for now, you can always add later
Amazing! I love what you did. Thank you for everything you share with us. 3 new amaryllis arrived this week!🤣🤣🥰
Thank you for sharing. I use to be able to do all this with ease. Blessings to you. It will be gorgeous❤
Hi, you did a great job on the patio. For that big planter , there is a stone texture spray paint you can use. Love your contents
Beautiful outline with the stone and that's not easy. I got the same stone to make a short walk from sidewalk to my greenhouse to the garden gate. I only had about 8 of those rocks and it took me a long time to figure out how they fit. I had to youtube it too!
It's beautiful!! What a great job!
Looks like a welcoming spot!
Wow looks fantastic! You go girl! I could imagine planter pots flanking on the sides instead of just mulch maybe gravel incased w/ stones (?)
Nice work and yes flower pots would be good for the corners. And if you don’t paint your current pot you can match 2 new ones to it to coordinate 🌻
Love it looking very nice…😀🌼🌺🌾
I love using a spray paint I buy at Lowes. It is a dark bronze color and in the sunlight there is a glimmer. The grand is Rustoleum metallic.
looks great! almost like a flower. I laughed out loud when you made fun of your pants! lol. I could never look at myself on video I give you so much credit.
Paint the terra-cotta pot with fusion mineral paint (a stone-gray color). That’s what I did & it worked!
The stone patio looks Great!
Great job! I was considering removing sod on side of my house. You made it look easy!! Maybe paint the flower pot the color of your chairs?
The patio is stunning and certainly does look like an old English cottage garden area. I would add sweet alyssum seeds to the mulched area and let them cover it. I have some along a sidewalk here in NJ and they grow so fast and bloom until Nov/Dec (with one cut back in September). It's low growing but holds down the weeds... AND my self seeds now (zone 7a).
I'd love to know more details about how the stones are sold since they seem like a perfectly patterned puzzle once you figured out how they connect! (Delivery was worth the money! Great job, Danielle!

Whew! The patio looks wonderful. I don’t envy you all that hard work - my back could not handle it these days… ☹️
Regarding the borders, I think they are too small and would widen them as you suggested.
Love the patio stones! Good job. Yeah maybe just paint the terracota pot to change the color.
You did a great job! I think containers would look good on each end.
i suggest dark charcoal stain for pot to compliment iron work and lounge chairs in background. would love to see wood bed frames stained also. adds elegance and drama ;)
i used similiar stone from lowes 12 yrs ago. turned out fab. had to end up having it installed as ea piece was 33 pounds and i overestimated myself (getting older). i love the edges. i also did 2 straight paths and the edges were soft wavy cool. did haul many trips in pt cruiser tho. ;)
Great new addition. Love it
Be careful of making the area to busy.
Good Job, Your work is extraordinary. Do it yourself without the help of others
