I was out for dinner last night with some girlfriends (most of whom have been married for a while) and we all agreed that we want a love song titled 'I don't need a dozen roses, I just need you to take the bins out'.

  • @ChristianDogLover

It's refreshing to hear someone else say that the phrase "you can't love others until you love yourself" is untrue. Not only is that not true (because as you said, there are people who hate themselves but pour their soul into their loved ones), but it's incredibly disheartening to be told that because of something that you can't control (you can't magically love yourself just because someone told you to), you are incapable of loving others. It creates a deeper spiral of self-loathing, so please stop saying this to people. It's okay to encourage people to love themselves. It's detrimental to tell them that they are loveless if they can't. It's far more helpful to reassure them that they are loved regardless of their view of themselves, and that you recognize and appreciate your love for others.

A song that talks about loving someone for who they are, but also, for the way that they change and evolve everyday:
"I don't wish to change you
    You've got it under control
You wake up each day different
Another reason for me to keep holdin' on
I'm not attached to any way you're showing up
I'm just gonna love you like the woman I love"

I used to love that song, because I always interpretated it as him singing for a woman that is not naturally perceived as handsome by everyone else. I imagined a regular or even "ugly" considered person where he is one of the only people who see her beauty (inside and out). That really spoke to me since I myself was not one of the pretty girls.
Then I watched the video and was so disappointed because the woman in the video is very beautiful and I think most people would say that. So it's really not that difficult for him to find her pretty. From then on I found the song very shallow.
Now I just decided that I continue to interpret the song as if it's meant for all those people who are not always considered pretty/ gorgeous by everyone. I decide what I want the message of the song to be for me. I still think this message of the song would be clearer if the woman in the video wasn't so extremely good-looking, but that's OK because I don't need to watch the video and I just ignore that part 😅 besides the song doesn't even say what other people think of her. It only states that she herself is apparently self-conscious and doesn't think she's beautiful.

    • @Bubble_is_here
      @Bubble_is_here 2 роки тому +6

Actually, the lyrics themselves could have easy been meant to be interpreted that way. The pop industry is known to prioritize profit: they want to reach as big of an audience as possible, to make a lot of money. Because of that maybe Bruno's producer or something may have made it that the girl in the video would be very beautiful, but who's to say that this is the girl the songwriter had in mind.

"There are a lot of people who have been taught to be modest and to be humble is a virtue..."
And there are also people who were simply taught that everything about our appearance and actions was wrong no matter what.
I'm (almost) 29. I was 26 or 27 when I finally began being comfortable singing along to songs, out loud, IN MY OWN HOME, and only in the last year or so have I been able to sing along with close family. I've accepted my appearance and physicality but I still don't think I'm attractive, no matter how I do my hair or what I wear or how I act. I struggle to accept compliments or praise even when I'm really proud of something I've done, because the vast majority that I got growing up were shallow, or even false at times.
The song is about one person in the relationship who is self-conscious about her looks and herself as she appears in the world, and the singer is reassuring her that to him, she's beautiful. That she's beautiful as she is, no matter what. And she probably needs to hear that, because maybe she didn't hear it enough from the people she was closest to growing up.
I've never had anyone tell me "you're amazing just the way you are." I've never had someone tell me, explicitly, that there's nothing about me they'd want to change.
No one has ever complimented my smile, or my laugh. Instead I got criticised for my teeth not being right, or opening my mouth too wide, or having bad breath, or being too loud, or at "best" being teased about my laugh. And never anything positive to balance it out.
This song is a dream for someone like me. When I'm feeling like sh**, I'll listen to it and just cry because it simultaneously makes me feel better and reminds me that I don't have anyone who sees me the way the singer sees the subject of his song. But it also reminds me that, maybe, just maybe, one day there will be someone like that in my life. (Or, maybe it's just a fantasy...)
P.S. As for the "if perfect's what you're searching for then just stay the same" - yeah, that one can be iffy, but what if this song is being sung (or rather, the message being given) many times over the span of a long relationship? What if we choose to interpret it as "just stay you, whoever you are"? Remember, if you go looking for negativity, you're going to find it.

The last birthday card my beautiful grandmother ever gave me was the one she ordered for my 21st birthday - it was a beautiful, big 3D cake that literally LIT UP a rainbow of colors and a cover of this song played on repeat. It came in a few days after she passed away, (she passed away the day of my 21st birthday) and I cried all day.
She always loved, adored, and accepted me for exactly who I was, when I never felt like anybody else loved me that way. I always knew her love for me was true, and she was the light of my life.
Now I must live without it, but every day I hope she's still with me, watching over me.

I love how naturally you admit your appreciation for your wife - as a person, and aesthetically.
My parents have been together for almost 40 years (married for 37), and my mom has admitted to me that she doesn't think my dad even thinks she's pretty or capable. My dad's an unrepentant, manipulative narcissist (among other things) - and it's very clear to me why she says that. He treats her like a dumb, petulant child. In times past, he's made backhanded comments (several in public/in front of her friends/coworkers/family) about how she's trying to be like He-Man (for using weighted machines at the gym), how her wrists and hands (before her significant weight gain) were too thick for most jewelry... on and on. He won't stand for accountability, and if he even thinks she's misunderstood or doubted his ideas - he'll fire off some SCATHING comments and treat her like she's not got two brain cells to tie together. There's plenty more, but I'll tie it off by admitting that the way they first started dating (as complete strangers) was that he came to the shop she worked in and asked her out several times - she'd say 'no... no thank you... I don't know you or your people, so no thanks...' (customer service voice in tact). Eventually, he mentioned he was headed to an event at his family's church - somehow that got her. They broke up for a bit, because mom didn't think it was going anywhere, but he begged her back quickly. Married around a year later, and the rest is history...

    My favorite lines:
I will be here and you can cry on my shoulder

Chewing hair is a nervous affectation. In this case from her body language, it seems like she is expressing that she is receptive to his words and advances. Often times like when a a person sees something like a really really cute animal and and is unable to touch it, the energy can manifest as a type of nervousness or aggression.

One of my favorite love poems is Shakespeare’s sonnet 130 because he just talks about how, by beauty standards, she's not that pretty but he finds her lovely. It ends with the cuplet "and yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare / as any she belied with false compare". You can be not perfectly beautiful and be loved.

oooh, I'd love for you to address the song "God only knows" by the beach boys. It starts with "I may not always love you..." and then goes into this romantic declaration of love. It's crazy because it's starts saying, "Hmmm...I don't know if this is going to last." And the whole "God only knows what I'd be without out you" sounds codependent. It's like, "I don't know if I will always love you but I just don't want to be alone with my own mess." And considering it comes from Brian Wilson...it's very telling.

I definitely prefer "don't go changing to try and please me, you've never let me down before" to this as it isn't saying change is BAD. or that they don't want their partner to change because they are PERFECT. It is merely saying that their partner doesn't HAVE to change anything to PLEASE them, or to avoid letting THEM down, which I definitely think is a GOOD thing. I would never enter into a relationship with the goal that "if THIS changes then this person would be a great partner for me". We all grow and change as people, and change isn't bad or wrong, but ideally we should love, want and respect our partners for who they are NOW, not for who we might envision they could become in the future.

Would love to hear you compare a couple of Montaigne songs as a reaction to healthy and unhealthy relationships - My recommendation would be For Your Love (unhealthy) and always be you (healthy). Just really interesting to see one artist explore their unhealthy relationships and their healthy ones in very different songs.
Her other recent songs are mostly about healthy relationships too, but always be you is all about the importance of putting in the work to make a relationship good.

although, i do see now that maybe this song is shallow, simply bc the writer didn't quite understand or know how to describe things that weren't superficial or tangible. He had probably grown up being taught that things that look great, are great. Maybe with this girl, he felt things he had never felt before that surpassed any superficial understanding he had of the world. He felt a certain radiant light from her. Maybe he actually did love her for her soul. But he didn't really understand what he was feeling. He went back to what he had been taught, and did the mathematicalness equation:
"If things that look great are the only things that are great, and this girl is beyond any level of greatness I've ever come across, that must mean that she looks really great. That is the only option."
Either that, or maybe he knows exactly the love he has, but a part of him is still scared to let the world view him any less than a "strong male" so keeps the level of the song at some sort of a basic surface level, as a protective mechachnism of his ego. Doesn't want to make himself truly vulnerable.
Which is actually completely understandable, considering that as one of the most well known pop singer, he doesn't just have his friends and family to "prove" himself to, he has THE ENTIRE WORLD!
It's one thing alone to become truly vulnerable and show humility to the people closest to you, but no one really wants the whole to see their softest spots.
Keeping all of this in mind, it doesn't change how I feel about the song lol, it still makes me want to pUKE, but it does encourage me to be a little more gracious to Bruno Mars in creating it.
And all in all, the song is a good representation of real life people, and real life thoughts and reactions, and I do appreciate it for that.
thanks again LOLOLOLOL, you truly are a legend.
Go have an even better day than you were initially going to UwU

This hits hard - I have a very low opinion of my body, especially after having my kids, which I’ve been trying to work on. Even looking back when I was THIN, I couldn’t see it!! Even in a committed relationship, it’s hard to understand why my significant other can still love me when I think I look really gross.

I would love you to react to Justin Bieber’s song Ghost with the focus on grief and healing after the loss of a loved one. I lost my grandfather almost three years ago, to a sudden heart attack, and still to this day my mom and I really struggle with it sometimes. Since then my grandmothers health has been decreasing and we don’t think we’re lucky enough to have her next summer unfortunately. I would love maybe some tips to help me and perhaps help me help my mom through loosing her last parent.

Your take on this song is a lot more positive than mine is, and it's kind of lovely to see tbh :) I think I've just been a bit put off by Bruno Mars' songs. Especially Grenade which always reminds me of 2 people I (kindly) rejected who got super pissy with me because they were "such nice guys who would give me everything I ever wanted" when in reality they were creeps who started sending me virtual love letters and gifts after I had just been polite to them a couple of times 😐 when I think about it most of his songs are nice in practice, but there's an intensity to it coupled with such a focus on superficial stuff which gives me the eebie jeebies

about Ross: it doesn't matter if he was in the right or in the wrong. his stubbornness and inability to acknowledge his partners feelings is what instantly put him in the wrong. he refused to listen to Rachel and how it made her feel, and he wouldn't even read her letter to him (idc how long it was) explaining her feelings. that is the reason I will always side with Rachel, because he could have ended the entire argument completely multiple times by just validating her feelings and taking a small portion of responsibility for his actions. he never does, which just shows lack of character, empathy and an ability to truly be a partner, which is what everyone deserves.

@@sorshae.elsbernd6132 he's definitely selfish and doesn't care about shared goals, but rather what he can get out of the relationship with Rachel. As an adult i now see a LOT of red flag behaviors that i would be running from as Rachel, whereas i adored Ross as a kid. Maturity definitely changed my view on a lot of things in regards to him, but i still love his character as a character for the comedic value he added.

I think they were both in the wrong as Rachel stated she wanted to take "a break" but she and Ross never elaborated what that MEANT exactly so there was no understanding of boundaries. No understanding of what one could do or could/should not do. Ross should not have slept with someone else sure but it was not planned or premeditated. I don't take either of their sides because they BOTH failed to communicate and so they both share the blame..and generally, I think Rachel is bit overrated lol..always came off to me as holier-than-thou and on a high-horse and overly judgmental but eh..every character had their issues

  • @anonymousfellow8879

I think what always always eventually squicks me out with this song is…the Wedding Bells. Then most of the song is “you’re gorgeous/don’t change.” Which is…fine?? Compliments are good. But “never change” + wedding bells…yeah. THAT combination is what turns it from Sweet to Stifling for me. Every. Time. (But because they come in at the second half of the chorus/verse two respectively, it’s hard to Concrete Remember vs this…sticky vibe if I listen to the full song.)

One Direction- “What Makes You Beautiful”
    Ed Sheeran- “Perfect”
I love these songs but I hate the emphasis each one places on appearance. I also hate this narrative of, “She’s so attractive but she has low self-esteem and that makes her even more attractive to me,” especially when the reality is that she knows she’s pretty.

This might just be my opinion, but I kinda disagree Jonathan putting out there what he said of "can't love others until we love ourselves" Yes, there are people who don't love themselves, and still hold on their relationships, but I think if you truly don't know how to love or have actually experienced healthy love(not lust love/bad love?) Then you can't express or show that experience to others through actions. You share what you value, and what you know to others. Thus this is why I agree of the saying "can't love others until you love yourself". Same as"have to take care of yourself before taking care of others".
