Happy to see it. Coming from upstate, It was always frustrating switching from Grand Central to Penn Station to get to Long Island.
I've always been fine coming in from Long Island and connecting to Grand Central through the subways. Several months ago, I saw a UA-cam video of a test run at the station, and I was thoroughly impressed.
Hopefully they’ll eventually do the same with Nj transit
Yeah, it does make more sense to have riders from Long Island go to Grand Central unless they want to go to New Jersey or take Amtrak.
At that point I’ll just relocate . Sheesh that’s a commute
@@ciro9251 that's not the plan. Granted Penn right now is half done. But I doubt we'll see any real improvement there.
Standing ovation to the workers👋❤❤ They all deserve a raise
Thanks! It was only me and two of my friends. We did everything. 😶
"I dont think most folks had any idea that was going on"
Well remember a couple months back when people were complaining about noise coming out of no where around that area at night?
Wasn’t that in Brooklyn tho
I don't live in NY, but I visit here and there, and I knew something/some expansion was happening
@@Coffeewrld sound can travel at the speed of sound
@@thetacoguyy wow indeed. But that’s a sound traveling 4+ miles a city and across a body of water with ships and a dock. I don’t believe it works that way. Sound is quick in travel but doesn’t stretch. Especially in nyc. Let me know if you find anything that says the sound was in Brooklyn and Manhattan tho it’ll be cool to test this theory
I knew but if I told you I'd have to end you. 😶
It's crazy how this was below everyone's feet for the past decade and not many people knew about it, NYC's underground is so vast I wonder what else is hidden below the city
Cheddar here on UA-cam made a video on it. Lots down there including entire ships!

How does the weight of the buildings above not cause a problem? Could it collapse?
I’m sure they are trafficking children. Who knew, right? No matter how “they” try to dress it up, NYC is still the cesspool capital.
@@nofurtherwest3474 They're building under bedrock and engineers makes planning for tunnels and allowing enough support.
There are sections of I-95 that run directly under massive Apartment buildings, so trust me, using Bedrock as support? No issue.
Finally America is catching up with the rest of the developed in modern infrastructures and next is LaGuardia Airport
LGA Terminal B is mostly done and it's one of the best new airport terminals in the country.
LGA redeemed itself with Terminal B, now, they need to bring subway to the station.
I would call this expansion of Grand Central and other developments with Amtrak and other entities to be baby steps in the right direction, though there are some HUGELY negative steps in the beginning stages of being physical taken as well, at least in regards to Penn Station and the “updates” being brought to that station. It doesn’t take a genius to look at the current Penn Station plan and realize that it’s nothing but a glorified real estate deal that merely keeps the status quo with some added lipstick put on the pig when it comes to the track level and street level. ReThinkNYC’s plan is a far better alternative that rights the historic wrong of demoing the OG Penn Station as well as turning Penn into a more efficient through-running station rather then keeping it as the inefficient terminal it is now, though their plan does have some flaws that could potentially be easily remedied if the MTA, NJT, and Amtrak were to be collaborated with on fixing those flaws.
Wait till you see Dulles.
LaGuardia looking good now specially terminal B
Looks nice, clean, and modern. Let's hope it stays that way for years to come.

White was the dumbest color they could have picked. There's going to be handprints and worse all over it the first hour it opens. Especially when you consider where that new line is running to. Also, quotes by celebrities? Really? Nothing to honor the indigenous people? I'm not a celebrity hater or anything but celebrity comes and goes with generations. I kinda feel like they might as well put up a quote from Mr. Beats or something. I don't live there though so if the locals approve that's more important
What should be mentioned is that the project really started 60 years ago. The LIRR trains are entering Manhattan using the dormant lower level of a rail tunnel built in the 60’s. The upper level of the tunnel has been serving NYC subways since the late 80’s.
Better late than never!
So happy to see this. They left the iconic structure and spectacular main hall at the top but saw there was a huge opportunity below, replicating what so many great mass transit stations in Asia and other parts of the world have done.
As a railfan, this is pretty cool!
The main reason why this more exciting is the M3 Railcars making retirement non existent they are going to return 😀 I never actually rode one before .
Still, other countries would've gotten much more done for the same price.
Japan constructed their first intercity high-speed rail line for less. London's new Elizabeth line, which was criticized for being over-budget, cost like 10x less per kilometer. The US needs an opposition party that won't reflexively cancel public transportation projects.
As a helicopter fan, I guess it's alright.🤔
I LIKE TRAINS

there is really nothing to it for a tourist -- its for long islanders to commute.

As a tourist, I'm still awed at the incredible achievement that is Manhattan... It's stunning. Yes there are obvious issues with safety and such, but i feel like sometimes people seem to forget how absolutely massive NYC is. Every time i leave, i immediately want to go back. Americans should be proud to have such a monument to human perseverance.
Manhattan feels magical, it has such a special energy to it
I remember for weeks after 9/11, tanks at the entrances and military with long guns stationed all over the sidewalks not sure if that place would be the next target. What a difference twenty+ years make. Beautiful
And still not on time. And x 4 overbudget
If Grand Central Madison were a target of terrorists, the rest of Grand Central Terminal will be too.
@@peterstone6405 yea because we as a country don't build enough trains projects so people have to re-learn and retrain. Not to mention the bureaucracy that exists.
@@ayoiawe And the lobbyists!
You obviously haven’t been there recently . It’s a dirty mess .
Looks great, but keep people safe, and don't forget the subway!
While the subway is the MTA Grand Central Terminal is Metro-North.
@@SicilianStealth Yeah, I understand. Still, it speaks to the disparities between the two systems - one gets a total makeover/improvements, while the other is languishing in debt, low ridership and crime.
The subway is perfectly safe.
@@TheTimeForChange44 except the differences is that the subway system, our subway system is over 100 years old. One entity isn't responsible for the other. Crime is unfortunately everywhere and we simply have more of it because we have more people. I'm on the subway all the time and I was just out having lunch at Don Giovanni's and all I basically saw were people going about their daily business just like everyone else. While homelessness is an epidemic and the never-ending battle I was once briefly homeless myself but it got bad enough for me to change and now I pay my own rent. So whenever I see someone homeless if I can help out with a cup of coffee or sandwich that's what I do. So you are barking up the wrong tree as I commuted to Grand Central terminal over a 30-year period from Rye New York. I remember when Grand Central was a pit had it not been for Jacqueline Onassis the revitalization may have never taken place.
@@Tokkemon yeah. but crime does exist so be careful
between this and the Moynihan station at Penn, the LIRR and Amtrack have gotten serious upgrades. I can only hope they start focusing on Penn more and NJ transit cause that is still a mess and half of NYC commuters still come from across the pond
They recently announced the groundbreaking on new tunnels as part of a $22 billion transit expansion with Metro North, and renovation (and likely renaming) of Penn Station with new connections, while work moves ahead on the Gateway Project.
PABT needs a f*ck ton of TLC and overhaul. That amount NJT; Greyhound; Peter Pan; MegaBus; FliX... the amount of buses going through the terminal, it needs a $1 billion makeover
@@MarloSoBalJr Unlikely. All the big expansions for the next decade at least are rail and road. New NJ tunnel, metro system expansion and update, penn station expansion, BQE. PABT is very busy, and NY would like to make it much less busy. I've always felt that NYC has never been happy that buses go into and out of the city at all and would like them to disappear. NY is a train city in a highway country and finds it offensive it has to participate.
It's still not enough. The entire region needs serious upgrades and expansion. We seriously need modern infrastructure with new high speed trains not those slow Acela trains.
@@r.d.9399 imagine what could be if we had high speed commuter transit across the us... new infrastructure is needed throughout the whole region, and starting with transportation so we can get those upgrades throughout the northeast! hoping and praying for penn station especially to get the much needed renovation it deserves.
The energy of the MTA CEO about improving transit is exquisite. Also I love the fact the West Hempstead, Far Rockaway, Hempstead, and Long Beach Branches nor the existence of Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn aren't even acknowledged on the LIRR map at 1:18 lol. While NYC may not have a subway as beautiful as our Pyongyang Metro, there's no denying that when it comes to their commuter rail, Grand Central is absolutely gorgeous. And it's about to get even better with the LIRR there now too. Rail helped grow the United States, and building new passenger rail infrastructure is the respect that it deserves

Love how you can take Metro North from Poughkeepsie directly to an LIRR train without worrying about how to get to Penn Station.
I remember as a little kid watching an episode of "Extreme Engineering" on Discovery channel in 2003 covering the construction of the East Side Access and the new terminal. When I get the chance to visit New York City, this is definitely one of the destinations I'll check out.
I hope they don't tear down the old stations. They are so historic and part of the history of the city.
No it won't, because the old station of Grand Central Terminal is served by the MTA Metro North Railroad, this new station under it (Grand Central Madison) is for the MTA Long Island Railroad only.
So glad that NYC is modernizing. GCT looks beautiful!
Like they said this is HUGE for Long Island transit or just anyone coming in from Brooklyn/Queens. It will make commuting easier for millions of people
Brooklyn LIRR trains won't go to Grand Central. They operate between Jamaica Queens and Atlantic Ave Terminal in Brooklyn.
Good video. I've been there twice since it opened and got lost both times. I'll eventually learn my way around.
They unironically put a Jerry Seinfeld quote on the wall of an important train terminal...I love the timeline we're living in. New York's motto is Excelsior, meaning "Ever Upward", and this new terminal is a shining example of that. Did it take too long and a lot of money? Yes, but now many commuters will benefit from this change, so in the end it was completely worth it. And Metro North commuters will benefit from Penn Station Access once that's done too, as that is adding new stations in THe Bronx. The NYC metro area runs on rail. It's an example of what rail in this country COULD be. If you build it, they will come.
Seinfeld, Jay Z and Alicia Keys are important parts of New York culture aren’t they?
@@calebtheowl1516 Alicia Keys not so much, but Seinfeld and Jay Z are widely revered as icons of the city along with many other figures. I'm guessing it's a quote from "Empire State of Mind" that Jay Z and Alicia did together which became an athem of NYC.

Ironic that "Ever Upward" starts underground!
@@prof.ballabypikkalbhattham4507 You can’t build higher into sky without ensuring the foundation is stronger enough to support it.
I am so amazed how Manhattan is still standing with all the buildings that weights a tons on top of the solid rocks!!
thats what supports those buildings the rock outcroppings you see in Central Park are made of schist thats what New York City rest on so it supports all that weight of those buildings
Yeah you'd think all that weight would crack the rocks and the buildings would tip over!
Watch out for those mole people underneath the ground!
When you think about it, the buildings are mostly hollow. They actually weigh less than the material excavated to make room for their basements and foundations! So construction on New York’s bedrock doesn’t put any strain on it.
Bedrock is about as tough of Earth material as you could get.
The next step for NY is to make sure they don't become Venice if sea level rises
What a great CEO. Competence clarity and appreciation. Rare
I lived in Far Rockaway over a decade ago. This is monumental to go straight into grand central terminal.
Grand central Terminal, not station.

It looks great! This, and the new Moynihan Penn Station, are wonderful! I hope they don't slow down with all of these renovations and updates. By and large, America is behind most major countries with mass transit. Hope to see us finally join the rest of them in the 21st Century. I loved what they did with the Moynihan station -- utilizing the Old Post Office building, mixing classical old with the new and modern. More of this and less tearing the old stuff down just to build more concrete and glass jungle.
Rail should be the future in America, and expanding any mass transit in the NYC area is always welcome. We need it!
I get off at the grand central stop every day and had no clue this was happening haha. Right below us this whole time! Crazy. Excited to see it done.
The fact that empire state of mind is engraved on the wall is dope
If you're a New Yorker and didn't know this was happening, you've been living under a rock
How do they keep the water out?
they've been living over a rock, couldnt make these tunnels without the bedrock
Or they’re focused on paying bills you know….
There's always digging and construction happening underneath the city, every single year, every single month. Any true New Yorker should know that, even if they don't know the specific projects being worked on, but there's tunnels always being dug/built.

Dear New Yorkers can we keep it CLEAN
Now that is done They better put the money into updating the other track and making it efficient.
I’ll definitely give the new station a visit after it opens, sometime in January.
It was a long time in the making. Over half a century to say the least. Not as long as the Second Avenue Subway, but still, quite a long time.

Thank God Grand Central never saw the wrecking ball. If it wasn’t for the architectural catastrophe of knocking down the original New York Penn Station to make room for the current Madison Square Garden, the Landmark and Preservation movement as we known it wouldn’t have taken off which in turn saved GCT from demolition and probably would have made building Grand Central Madison far more difficult.

they can spend 11 billion and over a decade building underneath Grand Central but they can't get rid of the Garden and build a real Penn Station
Didn't they convert the post office across the street into the new train station? I worked at 2 Penn Plaza for several years in the 1990s.

I’m excited to know how this will make LIRR less congested, and hopefully much more open to LIRR rides at more opportunities for transit times, and hopefully even more express.
It’s still a travesty that New York allowed the razing of Penn Station. The one there today is an eyesore compared to the original that was built there until it was Razed. One of the biggest losses in architectural history.
MTA chair what about the College students!!! all this money and still no commuter discount and they have that for only H.S students and peoples jobs who cover !!!

It’s been over a year now since the LIRR began service to Grand Central. The terminal is bare. There’s nothing down there. Only small coffee stands have been serving customers for all this time. They need to put in restaurants and retail to attract more customers and it would make a lot of money.

Nice to see NYC still using tons of money to just funnel people into the City FOR WORK instead of focusing on getting people in the outer boroughs to OTHER BOROUGHS without having to travel through Manhattan.
I've lived in NYC for over a decade. How did I not know about this?!
JGLG it been planned since at least (correct me if wrong)the early 1970's. Construction started a couple of times in both the 70's and early 2000's with building under the current 63rd Street “F” Subway line Tunnel from the Park Avenue tubes. Then connecting to the "mainline" Penn Station LIRR in Queens.
However both times, it stopped due to severe national/international economic recessions. So basically this Grand Central extension is at least 40 years late.
Why live in a place as expensive as NYC and not try to find out the major construction infrastructure projects around you? Don't you care how they use your tax dollars?
@Phillip Banes I guess if you're not a Long Islander it doesn't matter to you. My parents didn't know about this project but I have since I take the LIRR every day. This will be a huge change for me.
Because you live under a rock. Probably lots of other things being built right now you have no idea about
@Phillip Banes The colloquial understanding of Long Islanders are those living in Nassau and Suffolk. And besides that, I think there are only three LIRR stations in Brooklyn on the Atlantic Terminal line, which won't be directly affected by the new GCM terminal besides schedule changes. Not as relevant to people living on that line instead of commuting to it. For Queens residents, there will be changes if you're close to the LIRR, but if you're in the parts of Queens closer to the subway, you don't really need to care as much about using the LIRR either. The fare is admittedly a bit expensive for those who have other options like the subway anyways.
Merry Christmas!❤
Great work
That looks mighty quality
The tunnels under the Hudson? Would be nice if they could put an additional one besides the 'new' one and THEN do their scheduled repairs to the existing old one so that it could be a bicycle/pedestrian tunnel (big enough for an ambulance/& or police cruiser). . .for casual upgrade to the Metro area.
