The correlation with spring openings and copper cyanurate is often the result of using an off the shelf "Closing Kit". They typically contain a Copper based algaecide and Dichlor, which when added together will react to form the purple precipiatate.

Thank you for the very helpful info. It is good to know the color will eventually dissipate if we keep pool chemistry balanced! I'm guessing it okay to swim in water once it is balanced but still has purple color on sides of wall. Please let us know for sure.

I just found this video...I had really bad purple on my walls of my 20 yr old fiberglass pool....the water itself was very clear after taking the winter cover off....the purple would not come off with just suction of the vacuum but with the brush vacuum and good pressure by me, the purple came off.....I did check my cya and it was about 100...I had a high cya a few yrs ago and dropped the water level and refilled and it seemed ok for about 5 yrs...the only problem is with fiberglass pools, it is very dangerous to drain the pool and refill it(even 2 feet down) because of the pressure on the walls from the dirt and stone...my pool guy told me about this when he installed it in 1999....the walls can collapse without proper reinforcing etc...anyway, I scrubbed the walls down for now and will wait for all the opening chemicals to work and then I will drop the water a bit and see what happens....one thing I did notice and you said was that the problem usually occurred when the pool was opened in the spring...I wonder if warmer water and water circulation has anything to do with the purple staying off the walls during the summer months.....I did notice occasional purple in corner during the summer but it would easily wipe off with hand pressure...any comments would be helpful...thanks for the video

try to get to more of the main points in and make the vid way shorter.. most people dont have the attention span to watch a 7 minute video.
