@mijalakis3 the only delusion here is YOU thinking its 100% live😭 a lot of it is live yes and we love that but its NOT fully live. you can literally tell when the playback comes in and out like come on 😭
She needs go back to using the same vocal presets and equipment that she used in 2004/5 for TEOM, her vocals sounded so clear in terms of the audio quality.
TTR on Shining Through The Rain was probably live, just heavily dubbed. It's the only time she lowered the key and you can hear bits of live vocals in places she would normally lipsync in later performances.
I think you're right. I always had the impression her facial expressions were a little off in that performance but looking back at it it might not be the case. I still think it's partially lipped though because it's pretty suspicious that she would actually attempt the sustained F5
Mainly because many artists lip-sync but you don't see their respective fandoms yelling from the rooftops "this isn't live" "it's 59.872% live". Eg. Beyonce and Celine Dion also lip-sync a lot but their fans know to be tight-lipped and mostly discuss it amongst themselves and because of that the masses think their mics are almost always on. Self-proclaimed lambs will go any and every where taking any opportunity they can to talk about how Mariah is not singing live... Sure she's not great at lip-syncing in a manner that looks believable but her fandom has played a great role in her being perceived as a "lip-sync, studio manufactured artist" who can barely sing live. To the point that you have gen z and gen alpha wondering if her 90s performances are lip-synced too.
Charm was mostly live but out of all the eras it was her most heavily dubbed era…. Also her lipping was so easy to tell cuz the mixing for the playback was so bad. It sounded like two different people idk who was on her team but 😭
I mean, she literally used pitched-down studio vocals from the 90's when she lipped her older songs. Of course it wouldn't sound natural to switch from live to pre-recorded to live vocals again because her voice sounded different during those times.
When she pitch down her voice, her tone become much fuller than her actual tone. You can see this happening in Hero when she used the lines from the Studio version. Such a wonderful and complex voice she have
I like her approach to lipping in this time frame because even though most hard parts are lipped there is enough live vocals that she can improvise and make each night feel special for the audience. I do wonder if she hadn't become so reliant on lipping harder parts if she would have worked on her reforming her vocal technique to her lower voice or if she would have just lost her voice faster trying to hit the high notes.
I love this analysis! Several miming giveaways included the contrast between the smooth playback and the comparatively breathless live vocals at times, her whistle squeaks when she pinched her chords whilst attempting to mime to playback, and sometimes awkward body language and posing.
Her lip-synching system is so complex like I can’t even comprehend sometimes how she knows where she’ll go live and when she’ll lip, sometimes it’s just so randomly picked for example in Fly Like a Bird, I wonder if she sees it somewhere like in a teleprompter or something, sometimes (especially in her 2024 Las Vegas Residency) she’s looking down too much like she’s constantly looking at it.
I love the changes she made from CWT to TAOM. The playback with the recent vocals is way more believable. She also did the same thing for the Vegas shows in 2009 I believe.
I dont know if its intentional in this video but thank you for adding just a few more seconds to the captions so I can read and comprehend them without pausing with every paragraph. I get distracted with Mimis vocals so I always have to start over when I read your excerpts. Which was weird coz I use subtitles for everything but your other videos I struggled with reading fast enough. 😂
Great once again. Loved that clip used for the introduction of TEOM era. As usual, unbiased, undelusional and well-informed. I normally wouldn’t watch vids like this, but I am, this series of yours.
"It's kind of a similar to what she's been doing in 2024. But whereas 20 years ago it was a couple fully live songs, now it's been reduced to a couple of fully live lines" 😔
Most people can't sing like Mariah for even one night of their lives, she can't sing like her nightly without destroying her voice. I take nothing away from her for lipping here and there while on tour or performing live people have an unrealistic expectation of her and when she does have errors people never let her live it down. Jesus she is still that chick!
I think it's safe to assume that the WBT climax was live because her breaths match, the last C5 was noticeably shorter and it had a faint crack in the end with some mic noise and she actually looks like she's singing because she's usually very excessive with her hand movements, facial expressions, and even moves around the stage when she's lip syncing. But here she looked a lot more focused.
I feel like she might’ve sung it live, but there’s no way the C5 sounded like that compared to the one in vol. which makes you wonder why she would dub so differently for different songs- but probably people were used to that WBT climax lol
@@outsideskippy1997 There isn't a sustained VOL C5 in that concert, which do you mean? And I think that the dubbing and her voice are really consistent in that concert compared to Tokyo Dome 98, Homecoming, etc.
Honorable mention for the next video, during the memoirs tour she performed honey, and the play back did NOT kick in. The “baby I can’t hardly wait” part. She improvised and sung it live. You should talk about some moments where the playback doesn’t work and she’s forced to sing live
11:56- I guess that this is the very reason why she has used prerecorded new vocals in the recent live concerts and almost all of the songs have been performed lipped. More and more people record the live concerts, upload them and the live concerts have become "televised(youtubised)." Mariah, the perfectionist, seems to me to be very sensitive and nervous about that.
😂😂😂😂 I liked the Charmbracelet Tour where she used to introduce the band by singing...."And I'm gonna do the best I can, with what I got". That should be JLo's mantra 👀
THIS is what the Mariah Carey-Fanbase needs! Objectivity. In today's world we only have the extremes. You are either a fanatic ("She always sings live") versus the haters ("She cant sing anymore"). And the true and most hurtful problem is, the haters have a point. This woman exudes talent - so why doesnt she rearrange the songs to her current vocal form instead of relying of lip-sync? Her art of impromptu changes is incredible (just look at the spontanous inventions of "new" songs such as the mob-song). She can do it. She COULD do it.
I love how different are international lip-syncing standards from lip-syncing standards in my country, Greece. Here no-one ever lip-syncs, apart from some television show performances where the show demands it. Other than that, everything is 99,99% live!
Thank you for making these, I had noticed this for years but couldn't explain the complexity of it all. Or why she would only go in and out of it. Really enjoying these.
Yea totally agree with the fact that TEOM is such a high profile and successful album, thus she had to give it all out and sing live more then. But then you'd hear the unusual hoarseness/raspiness in her voice like the My All performance where she'd have those breaks in her voice especially doing the transitions, which is actually a sign of her live singing. I wish you'd do more analysis on the singing of WBT on the TV shows, as I was actually skeptical she'd done the climax live. The only performance I think that she had sung live was the intimate BET show.
Sorry for spamming😭😭😭. I wanted to say that I doubt any era prime or not would be able to sing Fly Like a Bird in the original arrangement even in the -1 key. And she would've lipped it like she did here, just a little less around butterfly. And I think that Glitter and Rainbow would've lipped more considering that she was hitting Eb5s and some E5s with no rasp and with ease in 2006. The shakiness in her voice was most likely from being nervous. I wish you would've included the performance where she did the " keep your head up" sustained Eb5 live.
Thank you for so perfectly analysing this and presenting it this way. there is always so much debate, and people get hurt and defensive, but you can’t really argue with this! Well done!
I believe her older songs were easier for her to perform because she made all types of different efforts to adjust them for live singing (some adjustments carrying over from her prime days since in those days making these adjustments was more necessary since she was singing fully live). When she performed new material, she wanted it to be closer to the studio version and she could rely on playback to achieve that. When she made new arrangements to old songs, it could’ve also been due to her wanting to keep it fresh and change up the set list here and there. Her newer songs were being performed for exposure purposes, unlike songs that were already signature songs for her e.g. VOL and hero, so it made more sense to stick to the original arrangement and maybe just take it a step down.
Lets give it to MIMI she put efforts to this shes a perfectionist yk i dont blame her ppl are just so mean hard and always drags her when a simple mistake is done. Can we talk abt some transitions tho it sounds real
i just want to say, this was one of the most interesting, in-depth, well described video I've ever watched of mariahs vocals. i would like to say nothing gets past me when it comes to mariahs lip-syncing, i have studied that woman like the back of my hand. your analysis of her "fly like a bird" performance was SPOT on. your analysis of everything was so beautifully described (with amazing vocabulary may i add, you know your shit), while staying respectful but truthful. i adore you and have subscribed - i genuinely look forward to your future content
I agree that when she is recording a song she pushes herself too much that it makes it impossible to sing it live. But I love her for that. I hope people would realize how a great musician she is. To anyone complains about her lip syncing, I challenge you to sing her song with the amount of time she sang it and let's see how will your vocals would turn out
With all that sweating she was SANGIN still lolllll in many of these she still had VOCALS during the non lipped as she did later too. Her voice is just delicate. Also you said FLAB 2006 was the only live WBT C5 but it was at BluePrint too!
I really don't think it was. the system was a just bit different this time. she sang "we belong" live but the "togetheeeer" is certainly not. or maybe the whole sentence was lipped and she decided to dub it with a live sounding "we belong", we can't know for sure since we don't have the undubbed performance
@@cristiandilella2337 BET is definitely dubbed but I think her face/body expressions look like lipsync to me. I mean we don’t realize how HIGH and difficult belts the climax contains. If she really belted those multiple E5’s, she would look like she struggles much more than she actually does in this footage…
@@mariahcareydaydreamera2526 considering that she did the last E5 and sustained the C5 in 2006 Grammys where her vocal condition was noticeably worse. I think it's safe to say that it was live. And if it was lipped, it's unheard of for her to never use that track again for that climax, since she usually does that.
@@PatchesNjosebut she even sang it’s like that climax live so…. why wouldn’t she suddenly sing wbt climax live cause clearly her voice was in a good condition
This is soooo entertaining to watch!! I'm glad someone's being truth and honest about what the reality is. I just saw her in Vegas and it's clear she's probably using AI now to help assist her with 95% of her set lol which is fair at this stage but people delude themselves into believing otherwise. Although I wish she didn't make it soooo obvious
AI? I don't think so. She'd still have to sing the same notes which at that point makes the AI redundant - unless she's AIing her old voice to her new one. Even then, AI isn't consistent. Even the "good" AI covers on UA-cam are flawed. They're just studio rerecordings. They sound the way she sounds on the Portrait remix or even the prerecorded It's A Wrap performance from LA Pride. And if she was using AI, she wouldn't be leaving parts of DFAU, Say Something & ABMB being the same parts from the studio version. AI is a stretch.
@@user-jq2fi1oc9c Lol I promise the regular person has no idea the kind of magic that can be made in the studio without the singer being doing much. Considering how ahead to the curve Mariah has been with her vocals and vocal production I wouldn't past it her.
I don’t think she’s applying AI to simulate entirely new note attempts because she probably wouldn’t wouldn’t be dodging so much if that were the case, but she probably did do something to smooth out her runs and tonal quality because the newest batch of playback does sound a little different from before. Also I have to say some of the whistles are quite suspicious
4:03 the humidity here in the Philippines is showing 😅 it's hot and humid. I hope the rumors are true that she'll be back here for a show later this year. I WILL DEFINITELY COME 😭😭😭
I can never get over the fact that to this day, there are almost no videos of her performances in my home country, Malaysia back in 2004 (2014 is kinda meh to me)
Mariah is known for layering multiple versions of the same verse… it’s her signature. Some can say parts of her live performances are uniquely her own style, voice, and placement.
Yaaaaas get that lamb analysis slay me C5 hunny. I'm surprised you haven't used the Canadian Idol WBT performance - I am very conflicted about that. I know it was a very common pre-recording of its time but it was the first time she'd used it and I questioned if it was live and then re-used. You can sort of hear her breath on the mic.
I just really wished that she preserved her voice from start in a healthy way. Though it's understood that she hit a record deal with that Guy and she really need to prove herself and work her ass up. I'm happy to see another vid why she do this! So other fans will accept that she lipped and dubbed. We all know when she is singing live.
i always give Mariah a pass for lip-syncing because she works her ass off. Honestly, i don't know how she got through the first half of the 90s. Especially while touring. She gave the world her voice. Not to mention all of the long hours that she put into the studio. Writing AND producing. At least when she does lip-sync, we all know it's her voice. She's not pulling a Milli Vanilli on us, you know? 😆
She’s actually using her voice compared to the other female entertainer WHOM I don’t know. Who never used her voice since she started her “singing” career later on…
I so much agree with you in everything you state here. Only disagreement is the line lipped in IBT: I think the whole song is live (it's always been until this year).
10:20 I believe she sang the climax live over the studio track (you can hear it when she says ‘rough’ in the full performance). It’s obviously dubbed but I believe she sounded good in real time.
Honestly her downfall in this era was the unrealistic studio vocals that she couldn’t replicate live. Songs like I wish you knew, circles, stay the night, yours, my saving grace, subtle invitation etc. daydream couldn’t even sing on her best day lmaooo. I think this is when she started using melodyne to pitch herself up as the leaked version of some of these songs sound so much more natural. I get she was probably trying to prove herself again to the masses but I honestly wish she was more mindful of what her voice ability was at the time
2:11 oh gag it im sorry but her lipping without you’s climax then adding a « reprise » as you called it will always be iconic 😭 6:33 fr. a forever mystery 😂
I think it’s very obvious this is made from a place of love and adoration for Mariah. For that I cannot say this enough, thank you for talking about this. I really do think this is so artful of her to do, nobody’s doing it like her lmfao. Do you think for your next installments you can make your text stay on screen longer?
7:30 good thing is she ad-libbed many whistles in songs like vol, and my saving grace 10:57 yes she has a history of adding imperfections (or pre-existing imperfections : raw takes in this case) to her wbt climaxes (or other climaxes) to be convincing ok ive finally finished commenting here i can move onto the next episode 😍 ive probably forgot what i wanted to initially comment lol it’s ok
Her lipping is a science 😅 the mixing of live and lipped is very complexed that in a way, lipping is a serious part of Mariah singing identity. It has also become her skill to really lip convincingly. The impact is that even if she appears to do crazy arrangements and belts here and there the audience has always been doubting if its truly live or not.. which takes away some of the hype.
Yeah she did get cought lip syncing when she was young and older no one is perfect right oh well I know she came out and admitted that when u get in ur 50s and 60s it gets harder to sing I can expect it idk whatever just be thankful u are still watching them and seeing them live and they are still with us performing instead of at home retired like some of them thanks mariah for a ll the music u made and gave us god bless u love u ur still the best and one of my favorites
the analysis is pretty interesting but I think it's such a reach, omg. I think she has many support vocals for years and years as any other singer to be honest. I can't truly see this lip-sync machine. Like a sentence live, a sentence lipped. With Mariah's level of energy we would've seen many bizarre moments, I don't think for a second she's that good of a mime... But anyway, impressive archive work and nice analysis. But it seems all a bit too much.
Omg so many remarks on the Charmie era, most of which I lived through so intensely as a supportive fan when we thought we had lost Mariah forever after the Glitter debacle. - 😅did she lipsync the national anthem for real? when she returned to sing the Star Spangled Banner, I saw it live, I had never been so mesmerized by a performance of hers because the times were apocalyptic and she embodied so much hope and personified resilience. I was all the more floored and disenhearted by the fact that she appeared to be lipping that one. It was peculiar. Who did lipsync this very song at the superball? It was not like Whitney’s legendary performance. I was so shocked that she made that choice and it was telling us she had zero confidence. - shortly after, I started to notice things during her performances and I had performance anxiety for her every time- I saw her try to hide her mouthing by turning her head away from the camera, her shaking inconsistent with the steady voice from the track, etc. - it was such a new way to lipsync, as you mention, it was an art for sure, but as an audience member it seemed unusual and it took some time to get used to. Also a major question I keep to this day is, if her performance is indeed so intensely segmented, who pushes the buttons on and off for her to intrude and stop the tracks? It seemed unbelievable that she could alternate between live and and recorded so many times in a live performance. I could assume that the mic has an automated volume detection to mute the track. In my mind I’ve always thought that a sound engineer has her mic feed in his ear and is in charge of turning on and off the track as she improvises in front of him. But that would be a hard risky job.
Wow, your insight as an og lamb is so interesting! To my knowledge, lip-syncing the national anthem at those big events like the superbowl is pretty common, but in Mariah's case she had planned it out very meticulously. Definitely she was still shaken by everything that happened in 2001. As for her lip-syncing system-I think for the most part the toggling is automated, in the sense that she plans beforehand which parts are lipped. Though in earlier years she would sometimes seemingly gesture to her sound engineers to turn on her mic at unplanned moments; I wonder why she stopped doing that later on, though.
ok fine im gonna start from here 13:46 this is her most iconic performance but a lowkey a scam 😭 she is literally acclaimed for this performance 💀 i mean kudos she mostly sang live. maybe dodging wouldn’t have been a good look on her 🤷🏽♂️ ok, aside from the lipped G#5 and other high notes, she ate 😩 the ensemble and hair were givingggg too 17:04 she either did them but didn’t keep em or realized the note changes were so good 😭 17:34 cause she can’t 🤣 projecting her vocal condition 19:32 🤔 you’ve been doing it for a month?? damnn
10:08 it’s not actually fully live Here are the live parts « When you left I lost a part of me » « So hard to believe, come back » « we belong » « Lean on when times get rough » « Sun comes up » « There ain’t nobody better » « we belong »
I wouldn't put it past Mariah to sing it fully live that one time if she knew for sure she could dub it later, but then again I also wouldn't put it past her to prerecord a special climax just for that one performance either and lip to it... It's definitely fully studio vocals either way though, either by dubbing or lipping, so there isn't really that much of a difference unless we get the undubbed one day

You can see this happening in Hero when she used the lines from the Studio version.
Such a wonderful and complex voice she have
I don't care if Mariah is lip syncing we all know that girl can sing and she don't have to prove something because she already proved it to all of us.
I'm so excited for this part, the complexity of charm bracelet era 😬
Her lip-synching system is so complex like I can’t even comprehend sometimes how she knows where she’ll go live and when she’ll lip, sometimes it’s just so randomly picked for example in Fly Like a Bird, I wonder if she sees it somewhere like in a teleprompter or something, sometimes (especially in her 2024 Las Vegas Residency) she’s looking down too much like she’s constantly looking at it.
It's on the teleprompter in purple vs white for live vocals
@@heeheeriah omg mistery solved! thank you
This is where it gets spicy 🔥
I love the changes she made from CWT to TAOM. The playback with the recent vocals is way more believable. She also did the same thing for the Vegas shows in 2009 I believe.
I love how the rasp in WBT - "I LOST a part of me" at 10:48 makes the lipped recording sound so good - I forgot how good that BET performace was
I can't get enough of your PERFECT transitions, lol.
Amazing video!
I normally wouldn’t watch vids like this, but I am, this series of yours.
charm tour manila really was one for the books! mother looked hot af and her confidence was extra!

Yes kinda sad at the same time.

11:56-
I guess that this is the very reason why she has used prerecorded new vocals in the recent live concerts and almost all of the songs have been performed lipped. More and more people record the live concerts, upload them and the live concerts have become "televised(youtubised)." Mariah, the perfectionist, seems to me to be very sensitive and nervous about that.
Keep the text transitions like this! You found the sweet spot
I'm really enjoying these videos. You've put into words many of the thoughts I have about Mariah's usage of playback.

Other than that, everything is 99,99% live!
and that should be it. MARIAH was never a live singer
@@odumosuolusegun2781not true, she has sang the hell out of vision of love many many many times live
This is a really good video series. Amazing Lamb.💕🦋
I wish you would've included the performance where she did the " keep your head up" sustained Eb5 live.
honestly I think she would have just avoided FLAB it was an era Rainbow or earlier, like made a remix or something like that 2000 AMA performance
and prime probably wouldn't even have made a song that difficult and complex in the first place😭
@@VMariahBecause Prime Mariah was intelligent and knew not to do something that dumb. 😭
I love this kind of content about Mimi. Finally! People will understand why Mimi are lipping❤
i just want to say, this was one of the most interesting, in-depth, well described video I've ever watched of mariahs vocals. i would like to say nothing gets past me when it comes to mariahs lip-syncing, i have studied that woman like the back of my hand. your analysis of her "fly like a bird" performance was SPOT on. your analysis of everything was so beautifully described (with amazing vocabulary may i add, you know your shit), while staying respectful but truthful. i adore you and have subscribed - i genuinely look forward to your future content
Thank you! I really appreciate this and great to see a fellow connoisseur🥰
Are we not gonna talk how deep You can feel the whistles on TEOM's Can't Let Go?
I agree that when she is recording a song she pushes herself too much that it makes it impossible to sing it live. But I love her for that. I hope people would realize how a great musician she is. To anyone complains about her lip syncing, I challenge you to sing her song with the amount of time she sang it and let's see how will your vocals would turn out
She saved me.
Waiting for the next part!!
I would die if I could watch the Undubbed version of that WBT
I am going to be soooo killed but I think Mariah never ever performed We Belong Together fully live (yes, not even BET Blueprint concert)😅
I think BET Is dubbed, but She sang live.
@@cristiandilella2337 BET is definitely dubbed but I think her face/body expressions look like lipsync to me. I mean we don’t realize how HIGH and difficult belts the climax contains.
I don't think BET WBT was fully live either. It makes no sense for her to do it there and nowhere else.
I WILL DEFINITELY COME 😭😭😭
For the next video there should be a solid 5 min segment analyzing the iconic Touch My Body performance on GMA 😄
I am just impressed at how she knows when to lip and when to sing live in any particular song.. how do you remember? It's insane
now THIS is an incredibly detailed video, congrats! ♥️
14:36 shoutout to 2016 E5! brave ssftriah
Why was she so sweaty on that Manila show? 😭 Is Philippines really that hot 😭😭😭
Yes
Oh Sweet the most objective showcase of Mariah's lip-syncing I have ever seen. Love you dhurling
5:07 subtle foreshadowing to 10 yrs later 😂
i always give Mariah a pass for lip-syncing because she works her ass off.
Something I find interesting is that after she gave birth, she replaced many of her re-recorded playbacks with the studio one again.
She’s actually using her voice compared to the other female entertainer WHOM I don’t know. Who never used her voice since she started her “singing” career later on…
I so much agree with you in everything you state here. Only disagreement is the line lipped in IBT: I think the whole song is live (it's always been until this year).
i hate how locals always put the Fly Like A Bird at grammys to knowledge Mariah live vocals and it's like 80% playback 😭😭
ikr they should acknowledge stuff like VOL and MIH more often compared to that performance😭
10:20 I believe she sang the climax live over the studio track (you can hear it when she says ‘rough’ in the full performance). It’s obviously dubbed but I believe she sounded good in real time.
It would be very strange if I opened UA-cam and saw a video about what a great singer Mariah Carey is.
Damnnn this is the moment of truth
I remember during this era there were reports of stage fright and she asked the audiences not look at her and be quiet.
To feel your body, feel your body, feel your body. Omg I love that change
12:34 the nodules comin thru ajajejsjsjsjheejeh
Your videos are so good and thoughtful provoking! And love the words you use sometimes like egregious lol
I get she was probably trying to prove herself again to the masses but I honestly wish she was more mindful of what her voice ability was at the time
This series is so amazing!!! 🎉
2:11 oh gag it
im sorry but her lipping without you’s climax then adding a « reprise » as you called it will always be iconic 😭

I think it’s very obvious this is made from a place of love and adoration for Mariah. For that I cannot say this enough, thank you for talking about this. I really do think this is so artful of her to do, nobody’s doing it like her lmfao. Do you think for your next installments you can make your text stay on screen longer?
Thank you! I’ll definitely try to increase the text length in the next video
7:30 good thing is she ad-libbed many whistles in songs like vol, and my saving grace
10:57 yes she has a history of adding imperfections (or pre-existing imperfections : raw takes in this case) to her wbt climaxes (or other climaxes) to be convincing

A certain early 2006 show 😂😂😂
Her lipping is a science 😅 the mixing of live and lipped is very complexed that in a way, lipping is a serious part of Mariah singing identity.
When She puts Her Arm over Her Face and walks around while belting You can tell She lipsync
the analysis is pretty interesting but I think it's such a reach, omg. But it seems all a bit too much.
ouuu I'm so excited for this one ❤🌟
Dhurlliiiingg! can't wait
Basically: The moment Mariah starts moving you know she is lip-syncing. :)

i still dont think WBT BET 2005 is live. Vocally almost impossible for even 2005 TEOM.
