Why Leaf Spy can be useful

  • Shows briefly why it can be useful for Leaf drivers, esp. those without the % state of charge display (all Leafs before model year 2013). This was taken against Leaf Spy Pro for Android against a 2013 US Leaf.
    AHr, SOH, Hx and visible capacity bars on the dash are NOT definitive measures of battery health by themselves. An unscrupulous person may have reset the BMS. When evaluating a used Leaf's battery condition, it is CRUCIAL to know how hot the climate it resided was before via sources like Carfax or Autocheck then validate whether those 4 things make sense vs. the previous location and service history (whether the big high voltage battery was replaced) on places like mynissanleaf.com. Some cars can be too good to be true.
    Hot climates like Phoenix, Arizona are murder on the battery while cooler climates like the Seattle, Washington area are MUCH kinder to it.
    Example of a reset can be found by Googling for daveinolywa buyer beware must read.
    Also, if you tap the area where the battery temps are, it'll cycle between that and the tire pressures.

    I purchased a Nissan LEAF 2017 3 days ago and just found out it has 99.3% SOH, 5 fast charge and 1728 Normal Charge. Very happy.

      What is your estimated range when fully charged. It sounds you have a recently replaced high voltage battery?

    Very informative video. I am using 2012 ZE0 for 5 years and it shows the weak cells when I go below 15% or so in SoC. Another useful feature for 2012 Leaf users.

    So, if the battery has had a BMS reset, there really is no way of telling what the health of the battery is?

    Nice Video! Lots of stuff I never use. I basically bought LeafSpy Pro to check on the battery health.

    Are the read outs on the Leaf Spy purely reading the cars computer or is it actually checking the real state of the battery. Bearing in mind the possibility of a BSM reset ie the memory or history data may have been compromised.

    What's the difference between Leaf Spy Lite/Leaf Spy/Leaf Spy Pro ?
    I'm getting my 2012 tomorrow.

      Lite is free and should be used to verify your phone and OBD2 dongle work before paying for the regular or Pro versions.
      Look at description of play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Turbo3.Leaf_Spy1&hl=en to see what regular vs. Pro offers. I feel the ability to read DTCs makes Pro worth it. Click on Turbo3 (developer's handle) to see the other versions.
      Do NOT buy the KW-902 dongle. Google for site:mynissanleaf.com warning kw-902 turbo3.

    My 2016 Leaf sl 30kWh when fully charged only shows 24kWh on leaf spy. It shows SOH at 87%. Does the BCM prevent charging above a certain amount or is 24kWh all I’ve got left?

    My 2017 has 10 months on it and 7800 miles. LEAF Spy says it has an SOH of 89% and an Hx of 84%. Is this normal?

    • @andrewc9442
      @andrewc9442  6 років тому +1

      Maybe. It depends on your climate. If it's a hotter one, I'm not that surprised.
      I haven't been following 2017 stats, but at least 12 folks with 2016 30 kWh Leafs have lost 4 capacity bars. See www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?p=519601#p519601. iPlug was #12 at www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=23606&start=860, lost his 4th bar with these stats
      SOH= 65.87%
      Hx= 62.84%
      Odo= 18,050 mi

      Thanks. I hope it degrades such that I can get a free new battery at about the 8 year point. Since I average about 10,000 miles/year my warranty should time out at 8 years. By then I assume battery technology will be drastically improved such that my new free battery will have no degradation issues and go 1000 miles on a single charge!

    Good info.
    Can Leaf Spy tell battery degradation without the battery being fully charged?
    Can Leaf Spy Pro?
    How much better is the pro version over the non-pro?
    Do they need a LElink plugin or equivalent?
    Hey, there are plenty of Bluetooth OBDII LELinks, but no Wifi versions.
    Is the Bluetooth version good? How much better is the WiFi version?

      It doesn't matter what the charge level is. You can look at SOH, AHr and Hx. However, unless the car's fully charged, you won't know the # of gids on a full charge. Pro has numerous other features like being able to read and clear DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) and changing some other settings on the car (e.g. door lock/unlock settings). See the Google Play Store listing for the Pro version.

    Anyone here have a good explanation of "weak cell"? Looking at a used Leaf, there are 10/12 bars which isn't bad ... but using LeafSpy SOH is 74%, and cells 1, 3, 5, 20, 24, 25, 27, 33,36, 39, 41, 43, 79, 81 and at least one more show up as "weak cells" during our short test drive. The pack wasn't fully charged before our test ride (LS says 94.6% SoC). Just how bad is this?

    • @Sanjayadon
      @Sanjayadon Рік тому

      judging by the amount of weak cells you have, it seems bit more alarming. I suggest you should do a full charge and do a gentle discharge by going a full capacity drive with AC on. Then re-charge and do another run till the dashes show up. Once you do the charge, LEAF's gom will show more precise range. you can also do a software reset using a diagnostic scanner. Just ask your service provider. Hx and Soh are the values to watch out for!

      My 2011 Leaf can get above 5 m/kWh in ECO mode, no AC/Heat, in day, 50 to 65 degrees, city driving. The 3 u report tells me: aggressive driving, bad tires, high use A/C/Heat, and heavy use of the go-pedal for high speeds, going uphill, perhaps binding brakes. Does this help? There’s more: quick acceleration, no coasting to red lights, hard braking, weight in the car, headwinds, high resistant road materials (sand), towing, roof top luggage carrier. More? Thanks

      On this Leaf (a used '13) yes, because it doesn't have a CHAdeMO inlet. My previous leased '13 Leaf (returned at end of lease) did have a CHAdeMO inlet and I used it ~16 times over the span of 2 years.

      As long as you live in cooler climate, quickcharge doesnt affect battery health too much. I bought used leaf with close to 7000 QC's registered on bms. Have a vid up about if if interested.
