    Drives me crazy that there are zero videos showing the process of actually recording onto this device. I have so many unanswered questions of about the User Experience. I cannot find if you can loop the audio or if there's a count-in feature.

    THANK you Zoom, for making these AA battery powered with the USB C power option. INCREDIBLY understanding of musicians and how this product would be used.
    I can get a pack of eneloops and a charger and have a dedicated practice/recording tool totally separate from my smartphone, so I don't have to worry about balancing internet browsing and talk time vs practice time. Or be continually tethered to a power cable to practice or record. Or have social media and text integral to my metronome/amp sim.
    I've seen weirdos interpreting the ABILITY to switch out batteries as "having to." Does not compute. You can get a pack of rechargeable eneloop AA's that last 8 hours to a set and you can instantly swap out for another 8 hours (and eneloops hold their charge for YEARS) and you want a lithium battery that runs down relatively quickly in between uses, will progressively degrade over time, the charge getting shorter and shorter, proprietary, not user serviceable, leaving you tethered to a power cable? Instead of simply swapping out ubiquitously available AA's? What?
    KEEP using user replaceable batteries Zoom. THANK you for being smart in your product design.

      This seems to be an update to both the PS02 and PS04 Palmtop Studio devices. Love those. I still use my PS02 for silent practice. I got a Boss BR80. Easy to record, BUT the device is a pain to use and the COSM effects are garbage. So hard to dial in anything decent.
      I'm selling the BR80 and getting an R4. I will never part with my PS02. It's still a wonderful unit despite using dead card format (SmartMedia).

      Had one of the first in the then fledgling Touchwood Music - then there were multiple versions - mostly running double speed causing intermittent clicks - plus the noise floor when bouncing but even in those early days finally mixing with a tiny reverb unit on top of the tv!!! some of those tracks became classic - I even bought an old Tascam Portastudio in last 10 years to remix and take the tracks over to various digital formats. Back in the 60s we were limited to 2x 2x track Revox's running in tandem for bounces with a giant spring reverb under the mixer to get Vox echo or guitar if needed. The quality of running 10" reels at 15ips and later to knock noise reduction units on the larger 1" & 2" 8-16 - 24 track machines at 30ips - cutting & splicing, reversing tapes for SFX... all gone now into that digital domain - is it any better? We were learning back then now it's all learned at least at 96 kHz 24bit and 192 kHz 24bit it's getting closer to the Analogue World I grew up in.... but and the big but I still miss those days - no speed - just learned knowledge by experience.... hey ho the world moves on and away from the 80s-90s Sticky Tape Syndrome eh! I've ordered an R4 arriving today 15 April 2024 in UK would be nice for Zoom to send out some units for my other work Field Recording Atmos using Soundfield ST250 Ambisonic Mics and other Stereo mics - I do use the Sound Devices MixPre6ii plus my still trusty Roland R-26 96Khz 24bit 6-track with its 4 on-board XY-Omni mics with inputs on Combi XLRs and 1/8" for Lavs or other from 2011. Be interesting to see what this little unit at this price can do in 32bit. Michael K Dixon OAK77uk

    Features the R4 probably, maybe has but I am not sure about
    --punch in/out recording
    --speaker/cab simulation
    --ability to record electric guitar and vox simultaneously
    --variable speed playback
    --loop playback
    --line level input (guitar friendly input?)
    --the "bounce track" stereo tracks play along WITH 4 tracks after bounce, or stereo bounce gives you 2 new tracks to record along with, 2 being taken?
    --save transport points to go to specific points in a song?
    --can guitar, while using internal effects, record clean/wet? Either or, or only one? Can monitor with effects while tracking but record a clean track?
    --tap to set tempo/metronome setting
    Looks like a fantastic product for students, touring musicians, and songwriters. Particularly, it looks like it can fill the niche of the Boss Micro BR and BR-80 or Tascam GB-10. I have searched exhaustively and nobody is even TRYING to make such a product, which is why guitarists STILL purchase the 10+year old BR & BR80.
    Seems like more of an excellent practice tool (AA batteries, metronome, tuner, amp sim? hopefully variable speed playback and loop playback? how does a guitarist or bassist NOT buy this at $199?) and scratchpad than anything else, with no competition in the market and Zoom doesn't seem to be able to articulate this on their website, product info with online sellers, or on videos. Really weird because you should be winning all day long with this awesome product you've developed. Like, you guys actually seem a bit confused and stuck on selling it as close to being a "field recording" device as you can. What's wrong with you?

    Hi @ZoomSoundLab , this is a very cool looking recorder! I am trying to decided between this and the H6 for a portable setup, and wondering a couple of things about the R4 to help make this decision.
    - The manual makes no mention of line level inputs, but I assume it can handle these, from a keyboard/synth/guitar multi FX?
    - Is the headphone/line out suitable to be connected to powered speakers to monitor the recordings/live input?
    - I assume you are able to play back the bounce track, to play along to as you record a new set of 4 tracks?
    Thanks,
    Sam

    Only just received: some notes: I come from a tape background starting back in late 1960s: I understand the potential RTZ is Stop x2 back to head of tape - Return to Zero: but if laying individual tracks that go wrong it would be useful to have a Return to new record start rather than to Zero (unless I've missed something): When Bounced the Bounce plays back yet the 4-tracks available is there a way to stop the Bounce playing back it annoys laying down a new try but not an Overdub for comparison after. A 4-Track Visual would be good to see the effective tape running from or along with the new track points laid down for quick sight of where along the effective tape. Plus would be good to see the Waveform whether switching to see this: I do like to have a Menu if not only to see what is available: I have downloaded the Full Manual and Printed it A4 size it has many sketchy points without answers. I like to lay new songs/tracks in sections as a single person playing all on own - different when in studio with engineers and or other musicians to play as we did in the 60s in one take - forbid the person who messed up and the band having to start again! Another awkward mute point is when recording coming up to a point to track there isn't always time to lift the faders from zero to the level needed without the switches clicking these need soft buttons: I'm sure I'll find a lot of other points including why couldn't they add a Stereo on board Mic not a Mono as it's not a bad mic and for quick Song Ideas would be very useful as well as using in the Field as I also record Atmos for Film/Radio and Music - just to have along as a snap shot that might be missed with XLR's being set up although this is another mute point being made for Musicians. I'm finding I'm having to slowly transfer to Logic the track and it is slow transfer as I'm not sure how long the Micro SD will take being taken in and out plus the chance to lose especially if it's a large 512GB upwards Micro SD - hope others can help if I've missed any of the points - BTW is there an external Visual Midi Controller showing Waveforms etc and external knobs/faders to use away from the unit aka Roland R-07 with Bluetooth and Sound Design MixPre 3ii/6ii? Music is a never ending learning lesson even at my age - music keeps us young of that I'm sure.

    32 bit float is definitely the way to go for unpredictable audio level inputs. I hope Zoom releases a new H6 with 32 bit float, or an equivalent, as some of us have invested heavily in the versatile proprietary microphone capsule system ( XYH-6 X/Y Mic | MSH-6 Mid-Side Mic | SGH-6 Shotgun Mic | SSH-6 Mid-Side Stereo Shotgun Mic | EXH-6 Dual XLR/TRS Input Expansion ) for field recording.

      The P4 has 4 inputs for 4 tracks. This has 2 or 3 (if built-in mic records to a separate channel). What does the 4th track do?

    • @ZeginMakesMusic
      @ZeginMakesMusic 7 місяців тому +1

      @@iuutoob There are only 2 inputs. A and B. A is either the built in mic or line in, controlled by a toggle switch. There are 5 tracks. 4 standard and one bounce track. The tracks are not linked to an input. They are there to add in additional instruments or overdubbing. My use case: I record vocals and guitar on 2 tracks. Then I record a bass on channel 3 and a bass/snare drum on 4. I listen back, adjust my levels, bounce the 4 tracks to the bounce track, then use the fresh tracks for hi hats, cymbals, harmonica, etc. Another example is harmonizing with your own voice. You need to record the entire song, one or 2 inputs at a time, until you layer yourself up a gold record. I hope this helps.

    • @iuutoob
      @iuutoob 7 місяців тому

      @@ZeginMakesMusic When the tracks are bounced, they are reduced to one track, so then the only chance to adjust the separate tracks would be leveling the volumes before bouncing? Or else save every pair of tracks to the DAW rather than bouncing them?

      Bouncing is saving the track as is onto a separate wave file. The original wave files are also saved. Bouncing not only frees up tracks, It saves any pams, volume scoops, effects you dial in. If you would like a combined track without any effects, You can bounce without effects to add in post production. What I would recommend is just bounce it twice, One with and one without.
