I'd love to note then whenever a movie from China with Michelle Yeoh gets dubbed in English, she always dubs herself. I always love that little detail.

It sure doesn't sound like Michelle in many parts. I know the three main characters speak english now, but it would have made it better if they all dubbed their own parts. It's very hard to watch it dubbed. I'd rather watch it three times to get everything in Mandarin and read the subtitles than listen to horrible dubbing.
@@evilcartmensolo7198 Agreed on horrible dubbing, my thing has always been that I 'hear' the subtitles in my head in the tone and sound of the original language...my only exception to my dubbing rule is the Cowboy Bebop anime, since to my ears, the original voice actors for Spike and Jet sound too similar to differentiate between them, while the English dub makes them distinct...
Then, there's my total mindfuck with the movie Ninja Scroll...again, watched it (ala CT,HD in my initial comment) so many times I don't need subtitles, so one night while flipping the dial (pre-digital TV, ask your parents 🤣), I came across it playing on TeleMundo (Spanish broadcasting) with a Spanish dub...on my 10th anniversary edition, I discovered that, yes, it also has the Spanish dub, so from that point until I recently bought the Blu-Ray Special Edition (which only has English and Japanese dubs/subs), I watched NS *in* Spanish, with English subs, for the sheer lunacy of it 😎
And she still got paid less than the other male actors. #MEFLEW
I love Michelle but how do you know she dubb her own voices? She retired from martial arts to have kids, no man will marry a bautiful woman who can kick his ass in bed
I know they're just jokes, but this movie is telling a story in a genre called wuxia, and in those stories, flying, floating on air, etc etc are normal traits for truely powerful characters, set in a mythical no age where gods, demons and heroes all walked the earth, and kung fu was half magic. The genre started as a series of novels by one writer (I forget his name) but has since become as common in China as SF is in the west. The mythology was adapted into the filmic style starting with the Shaw Brothers movies in the 1970s. Crouching Tiger is probably the most famous of them in the west, but there are hundreds of amazing films made in this style including Hero (Jet Li) that I highly recommend. The storytelling style can seem disjointed and slow to western audiences because of many cultural assumptions that the writers make when they create these stories, but once you get the hang of it, it can be really fun, sometimes very moving and always beautiful to look at.

Hero was an amazing experience. By far my favorite in the genre.

@Nate stokes not exactly. Wuxia mean mortal Heroes. Those Heroes hadn't no military power, serve no Lord, in primarily was at the lower class righting & misdeeds, similar to the knights chivalry code or the samurai Bushido. Wuxia has it's roots from Youxia, which is a code of conduct 300 200 BCE, no one writer put it in literature but many, None has anything to do with the gods, demons, or magic. Two early philosophers that developed youxia into Wuxia are Han fei & Sami Qian. And they span from ancient China (3 kingdoms) time to post-modern time.
A thought: can you sin a dub? Crouching Tiger is the movie I use to show people the difference between watching a movie in its original language with subtitles and watching a dub. The movie is waaaaay more impressive than the absolutely terrible dub it got.
READING SUBTITLES WON’T KILL YOU, PEOPLE!
I mean...he does read subtitles because he's hearing impaired. Heck, in several movies, he has given sins because the dvd/bluray subtitles sucked or were inaccurate.
I would guess this has to do with the dubbed version being the only version he had access to watch.
I've yet to find dubs that justify themselves over a subtitle...
I didn't realize this had even been dubbed.
Back when it came out, we still bought movies on VHS, which meant there was no option to change the audio track.
@@karl_alan this wasn’t a shot at Jeremy. Moreso a shot at crap dubs. Most of the time, dubs don’t do justice to the film, and not only that, a lot of times, the whole movie gets recut to fit someone’s idea of what a particular region wants in a movie.
@@Amadeus8484 there are some that are passable. Not great, but they at least don’t butcher the intent of the dialogue as badly. Usually, for me, it’s one where they bothered to get a solid set of voice actors in for it, and even then, it’s more in appreciation of their performance than the quality of the dub.
I went very quickly from "Man, I remember Crouching Tiger!" to "I do not remember Crouching Tiger."
Being freaked out as a child by that guy getting that impractical weapon thing planted in his head might be the only distinct memory I actually have of it.

Chinese didn't wear wedding rings. And headgear/ hairpins/ combs are the equivalent of engagement rings. You don't give personal stuff like that unless you are serious. So some of these things are kept and never actually used.

I'd like to address the sin you gave when referring to (what I call) the "not sisters" fight when paralleling it to an MCU fight between two good guys. It is made expressly clear during the fight that Yu is a FAR superior fighter to Jen in three ways. 1.) Over the course of the battle, Yu showcases her mastery of weapon fighting by constantly switching between styles and disciplines multiple times by fighting with nearly every weapon in the room save for the monk's spade which she comically dropped due to its weight. 2.) It's heavily eluded to that the Green Destiny is magical in nature and imbues its wielder with a level of skill that they wouldn't normally have without it. Yu even outright states that Jen "would be a novice without it". 3.) Despite the Green Destiny's (possibly) magical nature and its ability to stay ever-sharp and decimate any weapon that it impacts, Yu still manages to break Jen's defense with the final swing of her greatsword and stop before dealing what would have been a killing blow...definitively showing that she would have ultimately won the fight had she wanted to.
It's really not that hard to tell what's going on in the fight if you're paying attention, which Jeremy honestly didn't seem like he was. Yes Asian cinema, especially wuxia and Yuen Woo Ping, likes to be a little bit more subtle about demonstrating who is winning at a particular moment and often likes to have more than just that going on in a scene. If you actually watch the scene you'll see that Yu is putting the pressure on Jen hard and trying to find a vulnerability in the Green Destiny by utilizing all of the weapons she possibly can, but the Green Destiny constantly comes out on top. After several rounds of this, Yu takes advantage of Jen's pride and comes up with a quick strategy to turn Jen's reliance on the Green Destiny against her. Brains defeats power, experience defeats raw talent, clear thinking and strategy defeats anger and pride.
while the Green Destiny is definetely meant to be a magical sword that is able to cut apart every other weapon, I don't think the Green Destiny does not imbue the wielder with extra skill. In the first encounter between Yu and Jen, you can tell that Jen is able to keep up with Yu quite well, even if Jen is able to get the upper hand in the majority of the time.
In this encounter, the power of Green Destiny is giving Jen a much needed edge to keep up with Yu as it will destroy each weapon Yu uses.
You can even see it at the beginning of the fight, Yu looks at Jen and then at Green Destiny, she is more wary of the sword then she is of Jen.
you can also see jen looking much more tired and pressed than yu during the fight
In Australia it was released in Mandarin with English subtitles.
Watching it dubbed into English gives me a 1970's kung fu vibe.
I think that goes for the default worldwide release (mandarin). The dubbed version is crap, obviously

I dunno if it's different in the English dub, but the one thing I felt sure would be sinned is just how long Li's dying monologue goes on for, on what he repeatedly tells us is his final breath.
Michelle Yeoh was for me the image of perfect beauty when i was teenager. Still beautiful.
Watched this movie again and again. Just amazing.

I think she had to learn Chinese for this film. She wasn't fluent in it before the film.
It's worth noting that the subtitles for the bit where he says "Real skill comes without effort" say "Real sharpness comes without effort"
Zhang Ziyi and Michelle Yeoh worked together again 5 years later in 2005's Memories of a Geisha. A beautiful film if you ask me!

The only thing I didn't like about it is that they decided to make the movie in English. Then again it is fairly well known that the historical accuracy in Memoirs isn't all that great.

@@Djoarhet001 I'm glad it was in English. I mean, I know it takes place in Japan, but the book was written in English, and that's what pretty much anyone who'd want to see the movie speaks.
So many people get Geisha mixed up with Oiran because of the Kimono and wet makeup. But the difference is quite clear if you know what to look for.

I saw this movie in theaters as a kid. The Subbed version. This movie is a masterpiece. The Dub takes away from the magic. Watch the Sub folks.

I saw this movie with subs when it came out in theatres. Was the best kung-fu movies I'd seen. The story, the cinematography and the fight scenes. OMG! I was so pissed it didn't win best picture at the oscars.
@Brohim, it DID win the 2001 Oscars for Best Foreign Film. So that's a win - of sorts.
Agreed, this one of my favorite movies of all time. The soundtrack and cinematography absolutely blew me away. I still listen to the music of this movie sometimes.

I love how there are supposed to be spiritual/mythical significances to flying and jumping high in the air, that have some deep roots in Chinese folklore, and Jeremy is like "she can fly??" *DING*

The fight between the two is one of the best choreographed fights in the history of movie.
You can clearly see the level difference between the two, one is a clear master with skills beyond her opponent's level...
And she goes full circle in all weapons of kung fu, saber, spear, staff, sword.
And the hook swords!
I'll always remember seeing this in theaters. There was a guy in front of me who let out a loud "HMMMMMMMMM" for every single plot/character turn. And then would laugh hysterically every time they "flew".

Calligraphy is like Chinese fencing. Extremely similar wrist movements and the training to do both actually have similar exercises. Albeit the sword training is of larger versions of these exercises; drawing characters with a large brush was/is actually a technique used to build the same comfort of motion for the fluidity of movement. Also, damn, this movie is rough in English lol.
I taught (and competed in) saber fencing for over 10 years. You're exactly right: this is definitely one where Jeremy's (fun, yet flawed) assumptions don't always work so well. :D

Dunno if someone said it before but at 2:09 Sin13: Servants are to put there hands in warm water before touching their masters, so they don't feel the cold hands/fingers. The fact that the director/screenplay put it in is actually amazing detail.

Thanks for this video! I absolutely loved this movie when it came out. No BS, I saw it three times in the theater (always subtitled). The best way to watch this movie is in Mandarin, with English subtitles.
I saw it on opening weekend in Manhattan, and then again the next weekend in Durham, NC..and I remember the NY Audience applauded and laughed at the appropriate scenes, while the Durham audience was just weird and quiet :o
Saw them both subbed...and when I bought the DVD when it was released, I had a hard time watching the dubbed version- very jarring difference!

The jokes have been killer lately. I find myself having to pause videos just to laugh.
The fight scenes make the Matrix look like a playground scuffle in comparison.
The same fight choreographer did both Crouching Tiger and the Matrix films. Yuen Woo-Ping. He did a bunch of martial arts classics before the Matrix, and he also worked on Kill Bill.
@@jdzlHowever, if you compare some of Yuen's work on the Matrix films where he's working with non-martials artists for the most part and compare those with a film where he's working with real martial artists (like Jet Li), it's like night and day.

I've never watched the English dub... pretty glad I haven't.
I think something like 25% of these sins could be taken back with the subtitled version. Also, a fair amount of the references have to do with martial arts tradition. Eg. calligraphy is like swordsmanship. The straight sword was the weapon of the scholars and the elite and it was taught that penmanship and swordsmanship are supposed to be intertwined. Michelle Yeoh's character is a common mercenary from the "Jiang Hu," so she wields the broadsword and makes those observations.
Just giving some context. Please resume your normal sinning.
I've heard the original, undubbed film is pretty sin-worthy so to say because all the main characters speak with wildly different accents (Chow being from Hong Kong, Yeoh being from Malaysia and Chang being from Taiwan)
Most of these sins are not sins; just things the narrator doesn't like or thinks is funny. Most sins videos have actual sins (plot problems, continuity, etc.). That is how awesome this movie is.
I love that they show just how absurdly sharp the sword is by cutting the pottery in half. a regular sword would have just smashed it, but Green Destiny is so sharp that the pot doesn't shatter, the sword just cuts through it like a hot knife through butter, with a clean slice. and with pretty much no effort on the part of the old man subtle but cool example of show, don't tell.
Last night on HBO was a Beverly Hills cop marathon. I immediately thought of you and the ripping you could give the whole set of movies.
For anyone interested in the Wuxia genre, I recommend watching Thunderbolt Fantasy. It's written and created by the Gen Urobuchi, the writer from Madoka Magica and Psycho Pass, it has similar action and elements, and the characters are PUPPETS instead of humans or drawings. I know it sounds silly, and it takes a bit to get used to it, but it's an incredible series.
That show was fabulous. I've seen at least one prequel movie & I think there's maybe 2 more movies. There's also War of Dragons on Netflix by the same puppet company. The costumes & character designs are just so good. I've loved all of them.

12:51 - wooden pillows, that's crazy. They clearly have covers, blankets that are made of softer material. Shit man, they wear clothes that are made from material softer than wood! So they telling us that they could think of or find nothing but wood to make pillows out of!?
It was the custom. Both men and women had often elaborate hairstyles and spending hours each day caring for them was tedious. So wooden "pillows" were used and people often slept using them as neck braces or rested just part of the back of the head. This supported the neck, but allowed the hair to be un mussed by sleeping.
Many people were also "trained" to not move during sleep by rather harsh methods as children, so they tended to remain still and not roll over much. It was also somewhat modified by the fact that bed space was smaller (single sized pallets on the floor as opposed to double, queen or king sized beds), which meant if you rolled about a lot, you'd fall off your pallet and hit the harder floor (not to mention rolling off the pillow) for a thunk that would usually wake you. A few years of this and you tend to not shift much. Similar stories can be found in modern military folks who use bunks beds, hammocks, and other small bed berths: too much movement can drop you out of your bed.
For what it's worth, some people in East Asia *still* use wooden pillows, though the custom has mostly died out.
Europeans tended to use softer pillows, but we also tended towards simple haircuts overall and more hats/head coverings. When elaborate haircuts became the norm, wigs started to dominate and people just shaved their heads or clipped it short.

You have to do 90’s Jackie Chan movies, Jet Li’s Hero, Iron Monkey, and Shaolin Soccer to name a few.
As a person that does not frequent going to the movies i seen crouching tiger twice in the theater, I remember it being an amazingly moving film.
My family decided they wanted to see it in the theatre. Our mistake was going to the midnight showing.

Contributing one extra sin for watching the dubbed version (cringe) and another for reminding me that 2001 was 21yrs ago.
This movie was a beautiful adaptation of a historic Chinese series of books. I am sure the book adapter, is far more talented than you ever shall be. The story is lovely and tells well the interactions between others, while turning the entire thing into poetry. This film won many awards. What have you done frankly? This film is brilliant.
maybe relax? this channel and what he does is for entertainment innit? I LOVED the film but these hot takes made me lul as well. Also, I love how unabashedly feminist this story is (literally three blind men and the elephant here) but this entire story is wrapped around ShuLien denying her own agency out of loyalty to her late husband, Jen fighting for her own against the shackles of her privilege and station and the JadeFox pushing against an anti-female culture and being fucked up for it. In the end, these three adversaries had more in common with each other than their stated reasons to fight one another.
Lady, this channel is a film critic and satire channel. Most of the criticisms are exaggerated for comedy and some are truths.

My initial reaction was "don't you dare" - But having clicked the video and seeing it nice and concise 14 minutes. I'm sure this'll just be a fun one :P

It's the best part of the movie for sure! The golden club was a metal covered wooden rod used during sword practice. The teacher holds it and the students hit it. You can see all the nicks and cuts in it.

I remember watching this movie as a kid and thinking “someone really needs to get this girl a PlayStation or something!” All the havoc she causes because… boredom?! She stresses me out.
I just watched this movie for the first time 2 weeks so this going to be good😂
This was pretty fun! Only two things: According to the original dialogue in Mandarin, Sir Te only accepts to be the sword's custodian/guard/keeper and defers ownership to Li. So it is still Li Mu Bai's sword, not Sir Te's. Also what happens in 2:08 is not washing hands but warming hands so your master doesn't feel uncomfortable when you touch her ears.
I'm TRIPLE sinning this whole video, for the first sin being that the dialogue is in English...I understand you're really going into this with earnest intent, and using the English dub to show why you're sinning what, but don't fall into that inane cul-de-sac of "'Muricans don't want to watch *and* read when viewing a film" cliche...I have watched the movie enough times now I don't even need the subtitles anymore, and no, I neither understand Cantonese nor Mandarin 😆

When I was younger (like less than 4 years old) I watched a lot of Kung-Fu movies and I genuinely believed that the continent of Asian had a lower center of gravity that is why they could do these stunts; I also briefly thought that when someone died on screen it was a sacrifice that person made for the movie. Oh the naivete of being a child.

You won't regret it. I remember watching this a little after it came out when Dad finally got a DVD player and I didn't have to hit the rewind over and over to watch my favorite scenes. It's crazy that I grew up watching the dub version since I could not read fast enough to keep up but I finally watched it a couple years ago with everyone speaking their native Chinese and it is beautiful. I'm of the opinion that every foreign film should be watched in its native tongue at least once just so you can hear the performances. It's a great movie either way though

Damn lol I was hoping this wouldn't show the dubbed version, it's painful to listen to imo but I understand due to needing Jeremy's subtitles. Ironically Mandarin speakers have said they can't stand some of the accents in this movie lol.

I agree. Jeremy is perfect for Cinema Sins. Dartigan is really good imo at Gaming Sins, too. They both have a really funny sarcasm in their voices when they want to. It's like an instant classic.

I still remember my 7th grade teacher seeing this movie in the theater and praising it. He was a white guy and this was new to him. For us Asian kids we've seen Michelle Yoeh, Chow Yun Fat, and all the well known actors since the 90s. And 20+ years later and I've finally watched the movie. Such a poetic film.

The dojo fight between Yu Shu Lien and Jen deserved at least 10 sins off; it so was beautifully choegraphed. Still my all-time favorite movie sword fight to this day.

You do realize this movie was shot in Mandarin, right? Michelle Yeoh spoke all of her dialogue in Mandarin and did the English dub as well.
Also, some of the English dub was hilariously bad. For example, during Jen's big fight with the goons, the English subtitle read, "Gou? I hate that name. It makes me puke!" The English dub said, "Gou? A name I abhor. When I hear it, my ears start to ache. I feel like vomiting!" Who talks like that?! 😂 I prefer watching CTHD in the original Mandarin with English subtitles by far.
In contrast, the crappy CTHD sequel released on Netflix *was* shot in English. And they used a totally different sword as The Green Destiny.
In Canada in the theatres I checked out, I'm not sure the English dub was even available. The showings were all in Chinese with subtitles, as they should have been.
This came up on my timeliness and I was mad but I love your videos so I watched. And I have watched this movie many times. I love it. I guess I've never watched it with English dub because the voices sound weird to me. And this movie is amazing regardless of your silly sins!! 😜 It's not supposed to be reality. I believe the romanticism of it all.

This was the first movie I watched that was dubbed, and even as a child I could tell dubbed movies are terrible. I tried to watch it subbed, but the DVD I had didn't offer that as an option. Either way, I've never watched movies dubbed again as long as I can help it. Subbed is so much better.
I was born in South East Asia and we grew up with all kind of kung fu tv show well know everything in the movie but seeing the opinions from western about how wonder in anything like flying and more giving me a refreshing vibe.
