MTD is a great lawn tractor. Bought mine at Lowes in 2000 17hp 42 inch cut . After first oil change go with Full synthetic oil. Mine is a work horse. Two sets of tires later still runs great. Brigs and Station twin engine.
Sounds similar to mine , 2002 18hp V-twin Intek 42 inch cut . Just did an oil change ( SAE 30 ) and cleaned the air filter , ready for another summer of mowing ( Australia ) One big thing I like about the engine is how much oil it takes , nearly 2 litres or 1/2 a U.S. gallon . I've had 4 cylinder cars that hold less than 4 litres .
Got the MTD Gold (same one?) 3 yrs ago. Awesome machine. Better than the Deere. Fifty inch cut, and faster driving makes for a huge time saver. Goes through a lot of gasoline. At 24 hp., it's more powerful than my Massey Ferguson compact loader backhoe. The 22.5 hp. Massey is diesel, so it has far more brute power.
Nice tractor . Just be sure and run a good battery . Most of those charging systems do not play well with bad batteries . And most pto clutches need min of 13.2 volts to survive . With proper maintenance they will last a long time . I use my 1971 sears a lot , but have a few well used MTD tractors from 2000 - 2005 , and they still do well , Had to replace a few pulleys and bearings , but they are cheap and easy . The 50 inch deck is nice .
MTD is sending me a check for the new battery I bought yesterday. The electric pto is different than all my other ones I used that were a manual deck engagement. I hope to get many good years out of it. Cheers
@@SteveRobReviews Cool that they helped replace the battery . As long as the charging system stays charging and run a good battery , most of the pto clutches do well . Nice tractor Steve! What do you think of the Kohler engines? I heard they are starting to import engines from China. How do you think they compare with other name brand engines like Honda or Yamaha?

MTD didn't have much to do with the build of this model. It's an ancient style of chassis made by AYP (American yard products) the seat is an Asian import. The fuel tank is made by Briggs and Stratton (take really good care to empty it every winter) Since it's a Briggs,it's patented and copyrighted and they ar over $80 from Amazon.
