I love Russia because of how complex he is. His backstory is saddening and painful; the horrible actions and behaviors that stemmed from it make me question his integrity; but deep down, it seems he really is trying his best to live how he can, cruel or otherwise.
I can understand why the characters are scared of him, especially the Baltics. Which is why I cannot accept the RusxLith ship, at all, because of how terribly cruel he is toward Toris. At the same time, however, a lot of the doujins I've come across of him are depressing, which then made me realize how confused I am about all of them, making me wish that he'd find some semblance of true happiness someday.
His character is pretty much a great example of a tragedy. His country's culture is beautiful and colorful and he seems capable of being a sweetheart, but the political side has been a shithole for as long as he's lived, making him incredibly prone to psychotic tendencies.
'Just because he's cute, that he could get away with his crime' YES. So true. This fandom, especially Russia's fans kind of turn a blind eye with fact that Russia hurt Lithuania.

Russia is indeed a fascinating character. However, I was always puzzled by the Bloody Sunday strip, in which he says that he had "worked hard to make this nation stronger and more prestigious than others", and that the demonstrators were getting in the way of that. While I'm sure that he did work hard, shouldn't he as a personification have been able to feel the deep suffering his people were experiencing due to the incompetency of Tsar Nicholas II? As someone who suffered through hardships himself, shouldn't Russia have felt empathy for the plight of his people? In addition, the demonstration was completely peaceful. Instead, he then said that he "didn't want children who can't play nice" and is implied to have started gunning his people down. I have been trying to write a fic where Russia is involved in the murder of the Romanov family, which is why I started trying to figure out why Russia gunned down his people that day. I speculate that Russia believed that things would change for the better, and that his people were obstructing progress, but that he was later convinced by Lenin that Communism was the answer to Russia's problems instead. I'm not sure if this really makes sense. (Another issue I have with the Bloody Sunday strip is that Lithuania tells Russia that the Tsar was having tea in the palace, even though Nicholas II had actually moved to a different place to avoid the demonstration, meaning that Lithuania would have had to accompany the Tsar there, and then return to talk to Russia, which strikes me as rather strange, but this doesn't matter here).
I think the name is actually pronounced "E-vahn".

Not everyone pronounces things the same. This must be a case of that.
+Hetabee he's Russian, in Russia you don't say 'Ai-van', you say 'Eeh-van', it doesn't matter if people say it differently, if it said as that, it is that, that's like saying the name 'Maya' as 'Mei-ya' and not 'May-ya', and he also kinda messed up his last name (Russian last names aren't hard! Why do people always screw them up? xD)

Honestly Russia is the most deadly/adorable character to me
It is mentioned that industrialization for Russia is like playing a game on the hard setting.This is the same for much of Russia's logistic challenges because geography is cruel to him. Russia is playing the game of International Relations with a poor hand. to survive he adapted to accommodate that creating what he is now.

if you want to say it the russian way, you have to say "eeh-van", because it came from the name "ioann" (which is the russian form of "johannes"[

Ok, I just found out this video exist. It is really good! Being a Hetalia fan and a russian myself I can also add that there are a lot of aspects of Russia's history that Himaruya didn't mention (he is japanees and it's not like bad or surprising) and that make this character even more accurate for us, russians.
For example, Russia actually never wanted to become friends with anybody in 13th century. He wanted a military help.
Ivan 3, who put an end to the reign of Golden Horde, made another friend - Crimea. Lithuania was one of the greatest obstacles for Moscow while it was trying to get rid off Golden Horde. So I guess Ivan never wanted to sleep with Thoris or smth, he simply enjoys making fun of him.

English and Russian fandoms are always exxagerating when it comes to Russia. But, remember, it is also a very funny character (Our history classes are sometimes really funny, russian politicians loved (love) doing stupid and funny staff)

Russia is such a hard character to write... you don’t wanna sway to either extreme because he’s not a black and white character. He’s riddled with contractions and gray areas that keep me guessing on how he would react to things.
I find him easy to write in comparison to other characters, but thats because im russian :P

Historically, yes Russia and America are friends (actually Russia would be America's 1st friend as a nation) but their friendship is more like two guys who are constantly competing with each other. There is a scene in the comic where the two get together to play a prank on England
They're more like "frenemies". They are sort of rivals and annoy each other, but their similarities can't be ignored. They are both powerhouses that are young at heart. Pretty dangerous combination.

I grew to love Russia because I see myself. I had an extremely hard time figuring out how to make friends growing up, and often resorted to violence when I was frustrated. I wanted people to notice me so bad, that I was completely unaware of how the damage I was doing to people. Kids were leery of me, and they had every right to. So, a character like him breaks my heart so much, because that’s exactly what I went through. It makes me want to crawl through my phone and hug him and tell him I am his best friend. Frick- 😭
