Making a TINY BOWIE KNIFE From an Old Wrench

  • I made this miniature bowie knife from an old wrench, a brass buckle and a piece of dowel. it's perfect for chopping baby pickles!
    I did most of the shaping with my cordless rotary tool (link below).
    I heat treated the blade with a Bernzomatic MAP torch. This was a three step process. First, I normalized the steel by heating the blade until it was no longer magnetic (critical temperature), holding the heat for about 20 seconds, and then letting it cool to room temperature. I did this three times, and on the fourth heating, I quenched the blade in preheated canola oil to harden the steel. Finally, I tempered the blade in the oven at 425°F for 2 hours. I tempered the blade three times, letting it cool to room temperature between each heating.
