Loved this episode! They had issues but were able to work them out because they had love too. A great message. One issue I have is why they ran the laugh track during this very serious episode.
@judyjamison9860 Donald Never had any intentions to marry her. I did it a guy for 3 years and I asked. Should we start looking for a place together? He got agitated and said I don't want to live with anybody and I said well. I don't think we're on the same page. He stalked me for 6 months because how dare I move on. A year later I was engaged. If I would have stayed with my ex-boyfriend. I would have never found my husband.
@@Belluser-we1uc5cb2l you can't judege everyone's situation by your personal experience.......we are not all the same nor is every situation the same as yours
@creepycrawlers6950 i was just explaining what I went through in my situation. I'm not saying everybody's the same and i'm not judging.Where did that come from?? Don't jump to conclusions, you're the one judging. Also, you spelled Judged wrong. You sound like your 13.
I really loved this show when I was a kid. I pretty much only remember the later period with LONG haired Ann and the groovy silly theme song. The show was on Thursday night back to back with Bewitched. I loved the apartment !
The way the show ended was very dissappointing, looking back on it some 50-60 years since (Geeze) some of the situations she was in were ridiculous at times but it was the 60s and early 70s, I did like Ann's hair and clothes, thought she was a trailblazer when it came to those, RIP Ted Bessell, gone to soon, it would have been nice to see what happened to them in the later years, Bessell was the best TV boyfriend/ fiance ever on TV, he is missed and forever remembered..
Desilu found out in the 60s and Paramount already knew that hard ends for shows planned or currently in syndication hurt the syndication contracts. Why Gilligan didn't get rescued on the series, why the Robinsons never got home or to Alpha Centauri, why the Captain didn't get relieved of the command of F Troop, and why The Enterprise didn't complete their mission. Afternoon TV liked loops as a season only lasts 5 weeks if shows 5 days a week
I'm completely new to this show and Marlo, never heard of it before. Just watched the first couple of lovely episodes and skipped forward to see how things look later on. What an amazingly beautiful woman! Surprised this show isn't more well-known. I don't think they even showed it here in England.
Thomas refused to conclude the series with a "wedding" because she felt it sent the wrong message to young girls that marriage was their ultimate goal. Yet this 5th season of That Girl had a proposal, a visit to St. Louis to meet her future in-laws and family, Don and Ann apartment hunting, and this episode (bachelor party/shower)---so WHY have all these pre-wedding themed episodes and yet not have a wedding.
I'm a very unusual woman. Prior to marrying my husband over 39 years ago, I "stood up" to 5 weddings. I didn't care about showers or caterers, or a special wedding dress---or anyone "standing up". We married at City Hall in 1985 with no ceremony, and I've never regretted it. We never had children, and I never wanted to be a "star". In addition, I've ALWAYS HATED "hen parties"---so here we are 39+ years later. I'm happy as a clam.
Marlo Thomas did not want Ann Marie to give the impression to girls that marriage was the be all end all to a happy life. If Ann Marie had been the one hesitant to marry...they'd both move on. In spite of the character's possessiveness and occasional idiocy, he had to be the fall guy.
A strikingly sad episode for a cute and cuddly comedy ( CCC ). Quite a switcheroo. But I enjoyed it. Her father actually made her feel better. Great father-child relationship, Yet my favorite is Jim Rockford and Rocky. But I digress.
How about the episode where Donald and Ann get engaged, at Citrus City? Much happier than this one. This one is very sad. Don losing his temper and raising his voice to Ann is a bit hard to take. Ann is being super pushy with Don but she is in panic mode about their future.
This irritates me.She spent what, four years with this guy. All this social pressure for a woman to get married. We should just be left alone l o l. He should have been honest with her and said he didn't want to get married. But a lot of men don't want to say that in fear of losing you so they don't care if you wasted 2 or 5 years with them.I wasted three years with someone. And it was like pulling teeth trying to get the truth.I don't and he said, I don't want to get married so I left and he stopped me 46 months because he thought I wouldn't leave and he wanted his cake and eat it too I found my husband ten months later, we were married within a year and a half he contacted me.On facebook like x boyfriend never married living with his mama and no kids. What a loser. I dodged a bullet.
They get back together after this episode. The last episode is when they went to the women's liberation meeting. Kinda of a disappointing way to end the series.
I understand Marlo’s reasoning that she didn’t want to end the series with a marriage. But since the show was about Ann moving it to NY to make it as an actress, then the last episode could have had Ann finally get her big break, landing a major part on a TV show or on Broadway.
They should have had a peaceful breakup at the end of Season 5. That Girl could have gone on to more meaningful episodes to reflect what happens when relationships end and new ones begin. It was clear that neither of them were ready to get married. Marlo was capable of better things as we saw in her later movies and dramatic roles. It would have brought back the audience that was lost at the end of Season 4. All in all, the show still manages to stand up among the best shows of the 60’s. It would have been interesting to see the direction she went into the 1970’s. Maybe, one day, we will know.
This marks the era of: "Cancel marriage; begin living together. She pays her way; he pays his. I had hoped that arrangement would have prevailed in the early 1980s with Michelle & I. As an alternative -- I moved out-of-State. Eventually I paid for "clothing optional fun" with females. Then I visited Maui & Canada. What fun I had! Love from Cav = U.S.D. Class of 1980! *
Ann is a pain in the ass the longer the show goes on. I don't know how Donald stayed with her past season 2. She becomes more unreasonable and immature with every passing season.
I haven''t noticed that so much as I feel they've really dumbed down her character over the course of the show. That episode where she filed the false income tax return was pretty ridiculous
I usually like Donald but this episode makes him look pretty bad! He couldn't even properly apologize and instead played the whole thing off as a joke done by someone else? And poor Ann totally blamed herself :( Imagine how Lew felt coming back and suddenly they were back together!
To bad they didn’t have the guts to see the plot through. People break up all the time. It would have been interesting if they took that road. I think a reunion was in the works before Ted Bessell died. The plot was they never married and Donald was now divorced. I always felt one of the strengths of the show is that she never made it in showbiz. Too bad the show never tackled the reality of the entertainment business. Some people never make it. Even super talented actors.
Too bad the show like Sanford And Son didn't had a good series ending. Ann and Donald never got married after all before the show ended in the spring of 1971. The end of That Girl sucked.
Actually, many women did, back in the day. A lot of women never wanted their husbands to ever see them without makeup because grooming and beauty standards at that time were much higher
For Ann, this is the happy beginning of a new life. For Donald, this is the sad end of his current life. She can't wait for the change, and he is dreading it. Surprisingly, Ann has emotional maturity (in this episode, anyway), and Don does not.
The outfit she wears with the black coat is fabulous!
I like to watch for the fashion
A la mode late 1970 or early 1971. Season 5, Episode 16
Keep watching ! Sometimes there can be up to 4 changes of outfit in one episode !!
Made me cry. Love these two characters together so much! Hadn’t seen this episode in years. Ann & Don forever! ❤️
@bigbandsrick1, Hope you grew up since posting this. "Made me cry". How weak!
It was Marlo Thomas who decided that they should not marry. I just found that out a couple of months ago, and I disagreed.

Me too!
Same here!
They should've done a " That Girl Again " like in the late 70s into the 80s Ann Marie and Donald having a family that would've been great.
When someone says they have to talk to you about something but it will wait until the morning, just break up with them immediately.
Yep.
No, cold feet. Not a reason to destroy a relationship!

25:22 the music brings back a flood of good childhood memories of watching this every week on ABC in the 70s.
Luv the blue phone and her plaid wrap.
For one Christmas I received That Girl paper dolls from my father, it was one of my favorite gifts.
