got 6 Medaka (3male+3female) in a planted aquarium. They behave completely different than in your tubs... the males claim areas of the aquarium that they defend from the other males. You can even see that they form pairs. the females pick favorite males and swim away from the others... i guess that they dont "LIKE" swimming in the open space, it is more likely that they are conditioned to get food there.... but what do i know.... just guessing... 😇
As I think I said in my first video, I'm very far from being an expert ... so I'm just guessing as well. But, from looking at the tubs from a distance when the medaka would not be expecting food, and, from observing the medaka behavior in my pond, I'm reasonably convinced that, given the choice, medaka prefer staying in open water areas rather than heavily planted areas. However medaka are highly adaptable and, in the wild, medaka can thrive in small populations in small ponds to large shoals in rice fields which have large open water areas when the rice is not full grown. I'd not be surprised if 6 medaka in an aquarium exhibit different behavior than 20 medaka in a tub or 100 medaka in a pond. Another couple of points ..... medaka are surface feeders with an upward turned mouth so would usually try looking for food on the surface of open water ..... also their eyes are towards the top of their head (I've seen it said that the name "medaka" may have come from "top eye" in Japanese) ..... so they are perhaps better equipped to look for predators attacking from above in open water rather than predators attacking from the side in planted areas. For example, in my pond, platies (with eyes at the side of their head) always hide away in planted areas but medaka always are swimming around in open water. But as I say ..... just guessing.
