- Arriving at Ho Chi Minh City Airport called Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN). If this is your first visit to the Ho Chi Minh City Airport (Tân Sơn Nhất International Airport) you should find this video helpful for getting an idea of the airport procedures when you arrive at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Vietnam.
This Ho Chi Minh City Airport footage is filmed from the disembarkation of our flight, through the walk to Immigration / Passport Control (Vietnam Visa clearance etc. is not included in the footage as filming is not allowed in this part of Tan Son Nhat International Airport - quite normal at all airports in the world), from Immigration to the Baggage Claim Area (in the Baggage Claim Area of this airport we explain how to find out from which baggage belt you flights luggage will be offloaded on), after we receive our luggage we proceed towards the airport customs area. There is not an area of "Something to declare" "Nothing to Declare" like most other international arrivals customs areas at airports. At Ho Chi Minh City Airport all passengers instead have to run all their luggage through another security scanner from where airport customs officials van see what the luggage contains. After clearing customs we reach Ho Chi Minh City Airports main arrival area. From this area we recommend travelers to use the money exchange desks, Telephone card desks (SIM Cards) and taxi services, airport shuttle services and limousines or get information about Airport buses to Ho Chi Minh City. We advice that you shop around for the best exchange rate as exchange rates are negotiable and there can be a large difference in pricing. We also ordered a taxi to Ho Chi Minh City from the airport. The taxi service from the airport was a fixed price of 200 000 Vietnamese Dong which is a fair price although the taxi trip from Ho Chi Minh Airport to the city would probably have been cheaper by taxi meter (we did not want to take that chance as this was our first visit to Tan Son Nhat International Airport and Ho Chi Minh City and we had been warned that some taxi company taxi meters could not be trusted. The video footage from this airport ends with us walking out of the Airport and finding the taxi that will drive us into Ho Chi Minh City.
Wiki writes about Tân Sơn Nhất International Airport, "Tân Sơn Nhất International Airport (Vietnamese: Sân bay quốc tế Tân Sơn Nhất, Vietnamese: Cảng hàng không quốc tế Tân Sơn Nhất) is the busiest airport in Vietnam with more than 23 million passenger movements per year. As of November 2016, it had a total capacity of only 20 million passengers, which has caused constant congestion and sparked debate for expanding or building a new airport. It was also among the top 50 busiest airports in the world in terms of passengers handled in 2015, serving Ho Chi Minh City as well as the rest of southeastern Vietnam. Its IATA code, SGN, is derived from the city's former name of Saigon. The airport is expected to handle 32 million passengers in 2016..."

Vietnam was a good experience although we only visited Ho Chi Minh city on this journey (we like to focus on one area), we will return to other parts of this country in the future. There is no substitute for actual feet on the ground and touch feel and smell of the destination but we do also enjoy watching the YT vids when we plan a new destination, those are what make us motivated to go to a particular country/city and what sights/attractions we may want to see. The flight footage from this trips has been filed in the archive and will be released in the future (there are many flights to be edited and uploaded before the flights we took for this journey. A new trip report is on the way and we have now been working on it for more than two months (they take very long to make). Hoping that it will be done within the next two weeks! Brings back memories of of trip last year, we flew Vietnam Airlines from Melbourne and when we arrived at the baggage pick up, our bags were off the carousel waiting for us. We flew premium economy(first time), but just one of the nice extras you pay for.
Nice to hear that you have also experienced this airport and that the video brings back memories. We have tried Premium Economy once with China Airlines and that was one of the best flight experiences we have had. We had booked and paid Premium Economy on another airline on our trip to Thailand which was cancelled for June 2020 - we look forward to flying Premium again in the future.

Nice tour of the arrival process at SGN, hope you guys had a good time there! Vietnam is a country I've always wanted to visit, and will have to start planning a trip there soon.

And next time if you have a chance to come back to VietNam, I recommend you to visit DaNang city. HCM City is in the South, Ha Noi Capital is in the North and DaNang is right in the middle. its my home town :)
I highly suggest for the Intercontinental DaNang Sun Peninsula Resort in DaNang. Its the heaven on earth. And the city is so much better than HCM and Ha Noi. Less people, more incredible and stunning sightseeings (Ba Na Hills, and Marble Mountain, Son Tra Peninsula, My Khe beach). its also very close to the ancient town Hoi An. Plus, we have more delicious seafoods. Let me know if you wanna get more info. :)

Tan Son Nhat airport in Ho Chi Minh City looks like any normal, modern international airport. Travelers should not have any problems getting through the airport nowaday. Back when I first traveled from the USA to Vietnam 20 years ago everything was a lot more different. Back then we had to depart the airplane using the stair and then get on a bus shuttle to get to the main airport terminal. There was no air conditioning in the airport terminal.

My how things have changed. I arrived at Tan Son Nhat on December 24, 1971. I remember thinking, This is not going to end well, when the stewardess (we didn't have flight attendants then) announced that we should not delay getting into the terminal in case of incoming fire. Returning to Vietnam is on my Bucket List but time is flying by and I may have to just be happy with UA-cam videos. :-)

Good intro to Saigon Airport. My advice is only exchange a small amount of money at the airport, you will get a better rate at the gold shops in District 1. And never book a taxi at that counter, go outside and catch a taxi (only use vinasun or mai linh), or better still if you are staying in District 1 use the airport shuttle bus for 40000 dong
Thanks for your feedback Stephen, we got a pretty good exchange rate after negotiating at the airport (the same as the currency converter (XE) indicated at the time. As we were first time visitors and came in late at night we did not have the energy to begin negotiating taxi prices or to take the bus and we found (in this case) the price at the counter to be fair. Next time we visit Ho Chi Minh and know the airport (and prices) better we will probably use the taxi option or if it´s early in the day, the bus. Thanks so much for your feedback, much appreciated. You may have to buy a phone in Vietnam-depending, as many foreign phones will not work with a Viet sim.

It was a really useful video for first timer to ho chi minh city. How did you know if the guy who approached you was from the same taxi company? I read some stories about people approaching you at the airport could be scammers.

Nice going back :-) Clean , pleasant and very cool . My first time connected to Hue . Also did the taxi voucher last time , found prices can vary too . Slightly cheaper outside . As with any taxi anywhere in the world , be aware :-) Have a good idea of the route you should be taking . As a budget traveler , I use a small cab , or share .I did . I stand to be corrected here . ...Bigger taxi , higher cost . Meter should be easily visible with the rate . Have not tried Uber or Grab , so no comment . Heard they are ok :-) If in doubt , get out :-) Any mention of police and reporting his number and registration plate number will get the drivers attention .
Back inside the airport ...yes ...keep your eyes open for short lines , thankfully not much of an issue here .
Was looking for something about 'visas' , depends on your passport I guess .
My previous 2 visits had me mailing away my passport up country , at considerable cost .
For my first visit , my concern was time , with a connecting flight .
Not with the 2nd trip, got lazy .
Next time , get online application and stand in line , completed forms go straight to line .
I am used to Africa time :-) so 30 mins is not an issue , and at about 1/3 the cost .
One thing that never ceases to amuse .....all the action when plane stops , or before .
The rush to stand and wait , hilarious .
Here you walk off the plane , no waiting for bus.
Rush to carousel for luggage ...it might say one number ......look for others on the same flight :-) All aliens , wrong place.
Currency , mine is not worth much anyway , just plug into an ATM and pay later , at least you know who is robbing you :-)_
