I'm super into tumblr, (www.ItsAkilahOb...) but I just never understood their dramatization of introverts. Like, there is actually a big difference between being introverted and having crippling social anxiety. Learn the difference. Do it.

This is fantastic. I'm an introvert, but the way Tumblr fetishizes and praises us is ridiculous. I don't drink gallons of tea, I'm not always reading books, I don't think I'm smarter than extroverts, and frankly, tons of introverts are just using this victim card as a crutch to excuse their social ineptitude. It drives me mad. You can learn social skills as an introvert. Seriously.
Also, I prefer coffee over tea. You're allowed to like coffee as an introvert, and I can't believe that has to be said.
I'm also an introvert and it can't be stressed enough, we can be social.
I can go out and meet strangers, talk to them like they are my best friend without problem. But afterwards I am drained. I don't even want to talk to my girlfriend. Just want to relax, alone, think and regain my energy.
And there are extroverts out there that have social anxiety, that feel like shit because they need the energy from other people but are afraid to go out and meet them.
And coffee is meh... I prefer hot chocolate myself.
i'm an introvert and have social anxiety. But hey, look at me, learning how to deal with society. I do like to hang out with friends, but only in small groups. Inviting complete strangers suddenly without warning really throws me off and makes me want to leave, but i'm getting a lot better at it.
Yeah... Introverts can be social, and good at socializing at that, but just would prefer not to if given to choice.
JoshSaysStuff So I am also an introvert, but I'm antisocial and I have very severe anxiety. What tumblr describes as being an "introvert" (other than the tea thing) is basically what I go through. Hiding from people for months, not talking or communicating with people unless completely necessary. Hell, I play MMORPGS and SOLO them. They make up all this quirky shit "I'm an introvert nerd HAHAHAHAHA!" and GOD. It's so annoying.
I am in total agreement! I am an introvert and I have really bad anxiety to the point where it serves as a hindrance in large social settings. This doesn't mean that I can't hold a conversation when in small groups or that I am unable to inhale any liquid that isn't tea or that I constantly have a book in my hand. Tumblr definitely romanticizes the concept of introvertedness (so not a word but yeah) to the point where people aren't allowed to be introverted without all the other 'cute stereotypic quirks' that come along with the title.

I feel like you've clarified so much for me lol!
I don't think Tumblr makes us look smarter than everyone-I think it makes introverts look like maladjusted people, which is my issue. Society already says loners are bad and quiet people are scary so why add to it by saying we're all socially inept cat worshippers? Seems backward.
Don't forget talking to cats and talking about how quirky your book reading positions get.
As an introvert, I can assure you I was lying upside-down comically holding my laptop over my face with a cup of tea and my cat nearby. :P

Lol... Call ya mama. I'm an introvert/loner too but I gotta call mom and dad at least. The guilt is too much. But sometimes I swear I'm being punished for all the friends/family I've ignored in my life with my extroverted child. He's always trying to invite people over, and begs to go to every damn family reunion/party/wedding/dinner. Can't wait until he's old enough to go by himself.

Tumblr is like the total opposite of real life. Real life: introverts seen as weird losers. Tumblr: introverts romanticized. Real life: people shunned for not believing in God. Tumblr: people shunned for being religious. Real life: rampant homophobia. Tumblr: everyone is an ally. In some ways Tumblr is great.. In other ways it totally sucks.

Yeah... I'm honestly really frustrated with how overly romanticized and "superior" Introverts have been made out to be these days. And I swear, if I read one more description about introverts about how they "just wanna stay home with a good book"... God I swear. Reading isn't only enjoyed held by introverts!

Buzzflop's video has nothing on this, I was taken aback by the sheer amount of effort gone into the visual quality of the video let alone the content! You can't really get mad at them because no matter what trash they upload people will still watch it. You just need to know that what you're doing is quality, entertaining content, and be proud and happy you have the creativity to be able come up with these ideas and execute them so beautifully.
Being an introvert isn't bad. But try being an awkward introvert...it's agonizing lol. And that doorbell thing totally happened to me yesterday. I was like "who is that?! I never have unannounced company!"

I love this! extroverts are not the enemy of introverts! being introverted doesnt make you better than people, and neither does being extroverted! we can all be friends and muddle along together. also a person doesnt have to be exclusively one or the other, everyone can have elements of each in their personality :) great video xx

To all the people in the comments section calling yourselves "antisocial"...that's probably not the right word you want to be associated with lol!
Unless you plan on running over everyone in your sight with a 16 wheeler truck, I don't think "antisocial" is the right word to describe yourself.
"Asocial" is a lot better...and less misleading.
6 years late for replying, but yes, antisocial has a very different meaning in abnormal psychology. There's the colloquial definition of antisocial (not wanting to hang out) and the clinical definition referring to antisocial personality disorder (characterized by having no regard for others, sometimes resulting in violent/criminal behavior). There are some in psychology pushing to change the terminology because of the misunderstanding. That's probably the right thing to do because the colloquial definition has become so much more prevalent.

Lol but this is true ! I'm not overly social but I've been turned down for jobs just because I was I wasn't as outgoing even though the boss's knew damn well I was more than qualified.
The one about the door bell is true for me, but I can imagine it being an extrovert thing too especially if you live or are home alone.
Yeah, I hate people coming to my door. I yelled at a sales/scam artist at my apartment door the other day because it was 8pm and it was like two big dudes. WTF.

I have some pretty gnarly social anxiety and even I get out more than those Tumblr 'introverts'. It's not fun or glamorous, it's a nightmare. But this made me laugh so thanks for that! You always have the greatest stuff on here. :)
Love your videos! So true about Tumblr. I’m pretty extroverted, but during university I lived in a neighbourhood that had excessive door to door salespeople, so I got the 'lying on the floor as soon as the doorbell rings to avoid being seen through the bay windows' down to an art.

As an introvert who Tumblr has somehow managed to categorize as an extrovert because the only way to be a TRUE introvert is to read 15.2 million books a year and lay in bed 25/8 with no apparent need to work for money or have any social interaction whatsoever even in the event of needing to purchase or order food... this speaks to me on a spiritual level...

I like the idea behind this video but I wish you'd acknowledged the whole 'spectrum' idea and how "making [introversion] your entire personality is boring" (you mentioned in the comments) because to me the message of the video just comes across as making fun of introverts and those who find solace in Tumblr, and I know often people like this can be eye roll inducing but there are next to no introverts in mainstream media and I only learnt of their existence via UA-cam, and always thought I was a freak, so it's important for people to have a space where they feel welcomed, even if they don't always do it in the best way (which I think could have been explained at the end of the video*). I have social - and general anxiety - as well as being an introvert but understanding there were people who needed 'alone time' etc. too and it wasn't a fault was really important for me, and people need spaces online because there aren't any offline really (that I've come across).
*I love your videos usually (and seeing you in such HD!!) but I just wanted to add this, for constructive criticism more than anything.

cordeliaistheone My only reply is that there are loads of introverts in mainstream media. An overwhelming majority of the most popular youtubers are introverts. It's this deluded Tumblr ideal of crippling social anxiety that makes you think otherwise. We all can be introverted and extroverted, but no, neither personality makes you more desirable or interesting or unique.
Smoothiefreak I can't think of any characters on mainstream TV and film being introverted except maybe Katniss Everdeen? but idk. I get that it doesn't help to think introverts are so unique and special but I grew up seeing mostly extroverts and in an environment where we're made to feel weird for not clubbing/partying etc. which sure some introverts like but I think most don't.
Bree Bridger Your comment has helped me see the video as more joking and about the 'mythical introvert' and how it's not a healthy thing (the black-and-white-ness of it), but I feel like Tumblr gets a lot of flack when it's actually a really valuable place for people who feel alone in offline life to find people who are like them, so I think there could've been more explanation (which can still be done in a comedic way - as Akilah shows in many other videos). I see that apparently this "According to Tumblr" is going to be a series, but I think in the SAME video there could have been some making fun of the way extroverts are portrayed on Tumblr too, to show that ridiculous and false dichotomy.

god bless you for making this. i've realized that tumblr has this fascination about being an introvert and if you're an extrovert you get shunned. being both or being an extrovert is not a bad thing. i like going outside. i would rather go outside than stay inside because going outside makes me feel free but that doesn't mean i hate being inside and just chill for a while. like jesus. GOING OUTSIDE IS NOT A BAD THING !!!!!!

From what I've experienced it's not just Tumblr, but the general ideas of most people that confuse introversion with anxiety or dislike of people/socializing. Which is not to say you can't be introverted /and/ have anxiety or a dislike of people/socializing, but that those two things aren't the same and don't have to come hand in hand. If anyone wants to read a great book about introversion (specifically how society is geared towards extroverts which is how we get these stereotypes) I highly recommend Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking by Susan Cain. It's an interesting read whether you are and introvert or an extrovert. It really helps you see the value of having different sorts of people who gain their energy, think, work, and socialize in different ways.

I really got to learn to not take everything on tumblr as something that is god-given and oh-so-right, because for all the problematic things that tumblr has exposed to me, there has also been a ton of problematic things on tumblr itself. With that being said, I consider myself an introvert.
I like coffee, I like social interactions (but I trail off often and overthink things... but I'm learning), doorbells scare the shit out of me (but more because it's like childhood phobia that I can't seem to get rid of, and not really anything pertaining to my introversion), and I'm learning. I dunno, I think every introvert is completely different and the overglorification that tumblr has given on this subject is unnecessary and even hurtful to people who consider themselves introverts.

OMFG this is great
I always thought this kind of thing was silly. I read a lot, but that's just because I learnt to read when I was only two or three, and I'm bad in social situations but that's just an anxiety thing. Introversion isn't my defining trait, it has almost no effect on my life. I CAN go out and do things, I just can't spend hours and hours with other people without getting exhausted. It's not fun or cute to be an introvert, it's actually kind of frustrating. I like my friends, obviously, and it's kind of annoying that I can't spend as much time as I want with them without feeling horrible the whole time. Being an introvert isn't sitting in your cosy fairy light-covered bedroom, clutching a hot mug of tea and reading a novel, rolling your eyes when someone acts like you might want to talk to them, it's just?? getting tired after being around people?? it's not a big thing??
