I think actually their different accents in this contribute to their character roles - showing how different they are = Galinda - the posh Upland, and Elphaba the more rugged Munchkinlander!
A lot of people seem to not like the different accents, but I actually feel like it was a really simple and convenient way to both cut back pre opening rehearsal time and thematically emphasize the otherness of Elphaba
Well yeah, but other people who have not only american accents but irish, or scottish or even a different english accent from the one the choose for the show had to talk differently from their natural accent. But idina got to be american because she's idina menzel
Eliza NoYouCan'tSeeMyRealLastName Number one, she chose to have an american accent, she still has to follow rules! If the producers in London said to her, "You have to have a British accent, she would proabaly have a British accent! Just because she is Idina does not mean she doesn't have too follow rules, she doesn't get to bend them either! Yes she is a huge success, but in no way does that mean she gets to act anyway she wants!
I saw it five times in London with Idina. The accent difference really didn’t matter because it added to Elphaba being different from all the others. The original West End Boq was Scottish and used his own accent too.
@Whiz And Friends I was saying it as a turn of phrase. Normally all Elphabas in the West End Production do an English accent., Idina was the exception. And while there are many rumors floating around as to the way she was given this privilege, I think it has more to do with the fact she originated the role and got a Tony for it, more than anything else. So yeah, she gets to do it just because she's Idina, and the production will probably never let anyone else do that
Ffion Lloyd They we’re both singing in english but Indian Menzel is american and you can clearly tell the two different dialects of who is british and american when they sing.
Idina was wonderful as always, and taking into account her accent, I thought Annalene did a fine job. I agree that this musical was not made for an English accent, but they rolled with it and made it better than I was expecting with all these comments about it.
In England, it's more common for children to call their fathers "papa". "Pop" is sort of unusual when used to refer to fathers. So it's more like "papa-psical".
Idina's one of my favourites, although I've never seen her perform live, I've seen Rachel and Rachel's understudy, but I still seem to favour Idina over anyone I may ever see. :)
it's for a charity tv programme called 'children in need' in britain. it happens every year to raise lots of money for deprived children around the world, people phone in and donate money, and in return, they throw a big long tv programme that lasts all night and lots of musicals and singers and comedians perform :)
I think this was one of Idina's better performances for this song. The riffs and everything were sooooo good compared to the soundtrack. Also, I love the British chorus in the background. They enunciate every word so well!
I think they were both phenomenal! Personally I think the real problem is the mixing of the two accents. They don't sound all that great together because they're singing the song two different ways really. But they're both really good
Remember seeing this and fell in love with the story musical. For people saying the accents don’t suit it’s because it’s not the accent your used to, I remember seeing this in New York and accents ruined it for me as I wasn’t used to the voices but I love it outside of the New York accent
I loved it but the accent kinda didn't fit together. The British was very powerful while the other one sounded more American and that kinda didn't fit together. However this was amazing!
when you hear it when both characters have english accent it sounds so much better i saw it on wednesday with nikki davis jones and gina beck they were really good!!
my childhood best friend and i practiced this song and popular for weeks and auditioned for our elementary school talent show. they wouldnt let us do loathing, but they let us do popular. as if telling someone theyre not good enough and you're gonna teach them how to be better liked is any better than an equal hatred, lmfao
When I saw this just two weeks ago, the cast were finding it really hard to keep a straight face at the scene just after the flying house appears! It was really endearing and funny! XD
I loved Helen but I aaadore Annalane. I am sooo sad Louise is leaving. I've seen her twice this year. Once for my sis's birthday and again for mine. I may be seeing her on leaving night for christmas
@d0ggylover21 well to the start with, it's the london production and kristen never performed in london. the original (and at the time - current) glinda, helen dallimore must have been ill or away which is why the understudy, annalene beechey performed tonight :D
@DEFiiANCE yes there is :) haha...click on the box bottomright of the video which has a pointing up arrow, then click on the 'cc' box and then you can turn on or off closed captioning x
She doesn't have a bad voice, really. It's just that the accent doesn't really go well (well, to us) with how it should sound like. I agree Idina's amazing though. :D
This Galinda look like she doesn't know the lyrics that well... I think Kristin Chenoweth's Galinda was by far the best!! ...and Idina is perfect like always! ;)
:( I didnt get to see the one in Rochester! I just didn't/don't have the money at the time. Did you know they're back? I got an email from DanCap bugging me to buy tickets with the money I don't have lol.
For ages I thought that this was Helen Dallimore as Galinda! Then, I actually got to know the London cast & finally realised! What a plank! :L Now, I think I've watched Wicked a few too many times (well, okay, twice) 'cos I love watching videos just to spot old ensemble members or whoever! Oliver Tompsett + Sarah Earnshaw :D Was it James Gillan as Boq in this? I can't make it out. Long comment :] Is there any way to turn off the transcript? It's driving me crazy!!
I think actually their different accents in this contribute to their character roles - showing how different they are = Galinda - the posh Upland, and Elphaba the more rugged Munchkinlander!
The way they described loathing... I thought it sounded more like love
Me too ! n_n
thats the funny part!
They really are almost the same thing anyway. ;P
+MrNegaBlox the line between love and hate is very thin
That's the point 😋
A lot of people seem to not like the different accents, but I actually feel like it was a really simple and convenient way to both cut back pre opening rehearsal time and thematically emphasize the otherness of Elphaba
Idina's laugh at the end made me giggle so hard! That was so adorable and heart warming to hear! Xxx
I love her laugh at the end. It's her final personal touch, her laugh is really pleasing to the ears xD
2:20 "every little trait however small" idina points at the brain
i love her
Sometimes I watch this just to remind myself that Idina got to do an American accent in the West End production just because.
Well yeah, but other people who have not only american accents but irish, or scottish or even a different english accent from the one the choose for the show had to talk differently from their natural accent. But idina got to be american because she's idina menzel

Yes she is a huge success, but in no way does that mean she gets to act anyway she wants!
She couldn’t hold it up, she tried in rehearsals to put on an English accent and it didn’t work so they said she didn’t have to put one on
I saw it five times in London with Idina. The accent difference really didn’t matter because it added to Elphaba being different from all the others. The original West End Boq was Scottish and used his own accent too.

1:20: How do I put this without being offensive?
1:21: Oh, I know!
i STILL wish I had been able to see Idina when she was in London
Idina is beyond adorable here!! :D
I love the American & Brittish accent together tbh 😂😍
Me too!
Idina was incredible! but the english accent and american accent for this song clashed ...
Emma Melaney Kerry Ellis is from Suffolk =P
Emma Melaney Also this is Annalene Beechey :)
I think it just tells the audience how different Galinda and Elphaba were...
Amber Bond they were both English
Ffion Lloyd They we’re both singing in english but Indian Menzel is american and you can clearly tell the two different dialects of who is british and american when they sing.
I'm listening to this and I just keep thinking: 'They're picking on her, not just because she's green, but also because she's American."
@@imAwareOfYourAddress that was a perfectly good joke, cmon whyd you have to ruin it
Oh I love Idina's cackle at the end...
I love how at like 3:45 Idina is smiling when she's not suppose to. :)
Idina was wonderful as always, and taking into account her accent, I thought Annalene did a fine job. I agree that this musical was not made for an English accent, but they rolled with it and made it better than I was expecting with all these comments about it.
How can a musical discriminate an accent? It doesn't make sense
The "I loathe it all" jingle seem like "I want it all."
I thought it was just popsical? Not papopsical...
In England, it's more common for children to call their fathers "papa". "Pop" is sort of unusual when used to refer to fathers. So it's more like "papa-psical".
D.N.A. Cat Same XD
D.N.A. Cat it is Popsical she just changed it. Which honestly, did not make me happy.
How did I only go and watch this last week! Want to see it again like now!!! Love Idina cackle at the end that was pure perfection!!
Emma Melaney I think that's part of the acting as well (except the smile, it was definetely not intentional haha)
Idina's one of my favourites, although I've never seen her perform live, I've seen Rachel and Rachel's understudy, but I still seem to favour Idina over anyone I may ever see. :)
it's for a charity tv programme called 'children in need' in britain. it happens every year to raise lots of money for deprived children around the world, people phone in and donate money, and in return, they throw a big long tv programme that lasts all night and lots of musicals and singers and comedians perform :)
i luv her laugh at the end
Hey! Idina Menzel, the original Elephaba, was in this! I didn't 100% enjoy the Galinda actress, but you can't hate the original artist!
am i the only one that cant get over that perfect laugh at the end?! idina. is. perfect. :))
i agree kristin and idina are best
Elphie has a lovely cackle. :)
Love Annalene Beechey!
Annalene is amazing!
I saw this back in march, i promise you your in for a wonderful night!
Idinas smile and then her laugh at the end
Idina Menzel = best Elphaba ever!!
Annalene is so cute, this is my favorite Wicked Performance on UA-cam.
I already have and my opinion still stand, probably because I fell in love with Idina and Kristens versions of the songs :P
love the cackle at the end! XD
Whoever did these captions is a Saint! Best captions I've ever seen.
I think this was one of Idina's better performances for this song. The riffs and everything were sooooo good compared to the soundtrack.
Also, I love the British chorus in the background. They enunciate every word so well!
I absolutely love it when idina goes “your voice” in an English accent it’s so cute !
I think they were both phenomenal! Personally I think the real problem is the mixing of the two accents. They don't sound all that great together because they're singing the song two different ways really. But they're both really good
I love how idina is "meditating" at 2:56 ;)
Annalene was lovely.
I love this song
i love her laugh at the end of their song
how can I not remember this memory I always watched children in need oh right I was 8 damn
i love how idina said zero instead of "o" =]
Gemma Nevitt I would have too 😂
oh Idina, I love your laugh :
Idina did the show in london for the original cast, too.
Remember seeing this and fell in love with the story musical.
For people saying the accents don’t suit it’s because it’s not the accent your used to, I remember seeing this in New York and accents ruined it for me as I wasn’t used to the voices but I love it outside of the New York accent
Idina Menzel is a goddess though
I loved it but the accent kinda didn't fit together. The British was very powerful while the other one sounded more American and that kinda didn't fit together. However this was amazing!
Storm Swirl I think it's because the other one is an American named idina menzel who also originated the role ...
Elphaba and Galinda are from two different parts of Oz.
The fancy accent is weird.
I'm British too, I'm seeing it in London for my 16th and hoping my opinions change when I see it live :)
when you hear it when both characters have english accent it sounds so much better i saw it on wednesday with nikki davis jones and gina beck they were really good!!
my childhood best friend and i practiced this song and popular for weeks and auditioned for our elementary school talent show. they wouldnt let us do loathing, but they let us do popular. as if telling someone theyre not good enough and you're gonna teach them how to be better liked is any better than an equal hatred, lmfao
Didn't even wait for the end of the video before hitting "like"
When I saw this just two weeks ago, the cast were finding it really hard to keep a straight face at the scene just after the flying house appears! It was really endearing and funny! XD
I loved Helen but I aaadore Annalane. I am sooo sad Louise is leaving. I've seen her twice this year. Once for my sis's birthday and again for mine. I may be seeing her on leaving night for christmas
without kristen chenowith theres just something missing!
@d0ggylover21 well to the start with, it's the london production and kristen never performed in london. the original (and at the time - current) glinda, helen dallimore must have been ill or away which is why the understudy, annalene beechey performed tonight :D
i agree it doesn't flow as well with a English accent but she is still a very good actress and singer :)
I know but at least their talent has been captured in the recordings of the songs they did :D x
@DEFiiANCE yes there is :) haha...click on the box bottomright of the video which has a pointing up arrow, then click on the 'cc' box and then you can turn on or off closed captioning x
Annalene
i think it works with a british person as Glinda (unfortunatley we have a talent for snotty accents) and it works well with Indina's dulcet tones
I love how Elphaba nods to herself like "Yep, she's blond-"
idina was so funny here
She doesn't have a bad voice, really. It's just that the accent doesn't really go well (well, to us) with how it should sound like. I agree Idina's amazing though. :D
same here
This Galinda look like she doesn't know the lyrics that well... I think Kristin Chenoweth's Galinda was by far the best!! ...and Idina is perfect like always! ;)
i kinda like the glinda in this clip especially how she sounds so posh but no one could ever be as good as kristen with idina.
Annalene Beechey - stand-by Glinda at the time
is it just me or was Idina smiling at 3:45 and 3:46 then suddenly drop back into character at 3:47?
1:32 lmao 😂😂😂😂😂
I actually like the clash of accents
The bear is the logo for Children in Need - it's called Pudsey
i love the...
BOO!
ahh!
*cackles*
@Imerry16 I wonder why she snapped back from smiling (I know your comment was 4 years ago its shown in top comments first page)
is it me, or does idina mezel look better with a green face/ in the role of elphaba, than normally
i can count the pixels
yes she is? glinda the good witch of the north.
well rachel is playing till october then louise dearman who used to play glinda on west end is taking over and shes pretty amazing tbh
haha yeah they are. my school is going for a field trip. im so excited! haha that sucks. i hope you can get the money for a ticket:)
I didn't know Idina was in the West End cast of Wicked?
She moved
Megan Hilty is my personal favourite.
i think kristen is the only one who can truly match idina's voice perfectly. no offence annalene. :D
:( I didnt get to see the one in Rochester! I just didn't/don't have the money at the time. Did you know they're back? I got an email from DanCap bugging me to buy tickets with the money I don't have lol.
love kristin more though!!
xxx
She left that year and Idina went on to England for this benefit.
I don't think she's playing Elphaba when I see it, someone said she was leaving before I go
and it's the understudy glinda as well. I don't know where Helen was.
id say if anyone can change ur opinion it will be rachel tucker
i agree....and im british
I thought Idina only was on Broadway ?
Is that Idina?
Yes
0:59 i thought they said there's been some confusion here and shiz XD
For ages I thought that this was Helen Dallimore as Galinda! Then, I actually got to know the London cast & finally realised! What a plank! :L
Now, I think I've watched Wicked a few too many times (well, okay, twice) 'cos I love watching videos just to spot old ensemble members or whoever! Oliver Tompsett + Sarah Earnshaw :D Was it James Gillan as Boq in this? I can't make it out.
Long comment :] Is there any way to turn off the transcript? It's driving me crazy!!
it's unbearable as the British/American accents do not go well together.
Oh, I don't know...It kind of grew on me after a while...
aw! did Pudsey have a pic with them? i want to see Idina with Pudsey. :)
Is it just me or are Wicked always doing charity nights! They did when I was there as well! :) (I mean this in a good way btw! :P)
I wish Kristin was there :/
The creepy breathing in the back round and the screech 😆😳😳
@upload13579 Yeah i saw that, made me smile haha
