Exactly lol. I just let my dog outside and she panicked then ran back in the house. Something made a horrible sound then ran off into the woods and continued making that short for a minute then just left. Crazy stuff. My dog just needed to pee lol
Whitetails snort loudly when they are startled to reveal to them whatever predator might be nearby. They swish their tails as they run away and glance back to see what might be chasing them. It's a way to foil an ambush.
@@hotmesspicker she smelled you. The only defense is to sit downwind of the deer. They have a more keen sense of smell than coyotes. The sound she makes is called "blowing'. They do it to warn other deer of danger. She will also leave a scent that warns other deer. Bucks rarely do this they just get the hell outta Dodge. It's far more common with does. ETA: They have poor eyesight. If you sit motionless they can't see you. They can see movement.
The exhaling through the nose does two things. One, the sound alerts other deer and two, they are also clearing their nose to then take in fresh scent. Another thing deer do is stomp their feet to get whatever has their attention to move if you are standing still and cannot be readily identified. I have spent many hours in the woods observing these wonderful animals.
I was amazed when I caught on to the stomping. So freaking intelligent. They got me a few times like that. Then one day I seen a buck doing it right it front of me. He would stomp twice look around then take a step and repeat. That was the day I learned to not react to noises
Thanks. That makes a lot of since. I’m a relatively new hunter. I’ve heard that exhaling in the woods before during my summer scouting but never really paid much attention to it until season opener started. Now I know if I hear that exhaling I pretty much spooked the deer out already.
I'm 50 years old, deep south denizen. Lifelong deer hunter. The snort is an alert, not sure about the clearing business. Bucks will also wheeze, which can startle the SHIT OUT OF YOU if close and unexpected. Stomping means you're busted and ya better take your shot quick. Bleating from does, fawns, and bucks have many lengths of duration and vocalization and many different meanings. Keep up peeping Tom on them! They are AMAZING animals, and are like dogs or goats- smart, inquisitive, and fill of personality.
@@homeostasis4me485 I've seen tons of does stomp when they know something isn't quite right or they see you in your stand but can't quite figure it out. It's usually the older, smarter ones. They will be on alert, but 9 times out of 10, they will calm down and go back to browsing or doing what ever they were doing, if they don't wind you or see you move. I really think that when they stomp, they are trying to flush out whatever they think it is that they can't see. They want you to move so that they can verify what's wrong.

the tails are my favorite part. they warn other deer where they're heading, and also daze and confuse predators if you have a bunch of deer running away and zig-zagging through trees.
I am convinced deer are the cutest things on this planet. They got these big eyes and innocent stare wherever they look. They walk so gracefully too. I'm not going to get mad at hunters for shooting them because they have there reasons to do so but I love deer just as they are, such adorable and pretty creatures
I'm a hunter and I completely agree with you. I spend hours admiring deer as they move around and interact with eachother. It's exciting and soothing at the same time. They are a natural resource and deserve respect.
3:49-3:51 I have heard one of those made the same sound while I was walking around the Cemetery yesterday afternoon. I thought it was a bird, but when I looked at one of the White Tailed Deer, I was surprised that the sound came from them. I never thought I would hear something like that in person.
Did you know that young fawns meow like kittens? Yep, thats the sound they make. Then as they grow a little older they make a sound like a squeaky little bleat, when they are afraid, or lonely, or they are calling for family. I live on a wildlife refuge, and watch them all the time.
Thank you for this. That's a sound I've heard many times and know exactly what it is, but trying to describe it to someone who hasn't ever heard it before is really hard and most videos about deer sounds are grunts, not the gtfoh sound a doe makes
both male and female will make this sound or call, bucks usually have a deeper sound when making this call but most definitely do it also, it is an alarm call to alert other deer in the area that they heard, seen or smelled something they didn't like
Yeah I’ve definitely heard bucks make this noise. One “barked” at me in total darkness on my way back from a tree stand in the middle of the night. At the time I didn’t know it was a deer. Then the next morning my buddies saw and spooked the same deer and it barked at them too. Luckily I was perfectly positioned to shoot that buck on his way outta there. Since then I’ve had two more immature bucks walk up on our camp site and bark at us in the night.
My dog was sitting still and quiet looking in the direction of 2 deer in our yard shortly ago. It was completely dark. I shone my flashlight briefly in the direction she was looking confirming 2 deer looking in our direction then turned it off. After 2-3 minutes, I heard this sound about 3-4 times. A minute later, they trotted off into the woods. I am surprised that in nearly 60 years I had never heard deer make this sound. Very cool.
I’ve read multiple comments that could be considered anti-hunting so I would just like to provide some education. First most hunters are not out for blood. Most hunters have a deep respect for the animals they hunt that non-hunters could not understand. Hunting has done more for conservation than any group like green peace. Hunters pump in millions of dollars for conservation efforts. There’s actually a tax on hunting equipment that goes into conservation efforts. Hunters are responsible for millions of acres being protects and conserved. Land that provides 4 season outdoor recreation opportunities for everyone both hunters and none hunters. Hunting is not about the kill for most. It’s about the experience. The kill is just a bonus that provides health organic meat for their families. I guarantee a deer harvested by a hunter has lived a much better life than any animal you’ll buy at a grocery store including meat labeled organic or grass feed.
I love deer!! I live on a big ridge at the bottom of lookout mtn. They are all over my property so I love watching these videos and playing this for them. There's a few does and babies in the area, so I walked back inside incase it was about to be attacked. Thanks for helping me solve the mystery.
So I live in Romania. We dont have whitetails but we do have fallow deer and red stags. Red Stags make a powerful roaring sound. I went on a walk in the forest near where i live. That’s a mature doe. She’s been around the block a few times. I’ve spent every fall for the past 30 years hunting whitetail. I’ve had more hunts ruined by old mature does. Nothing gets by them. Every autumn season, I see many deer, mostly females with their fawns, and I often hear that nasal sound close by as my neighborhood is surrounded by a big state park. Unfortunately, a lot of deer are killed by cars when they venture out on the highway by the state park or some driver decided to have fun in speeding down a forest road. Please drive responsibly!
I have heard that at night, but it sounded sharper and i thought it was a large bird being attacked by a predator? Freaked me out, i went into get my handsome man...he said it was a deer. I have heard the snort or exhale noise but what i had heard last night sounded like a very large teradactal or mongaloid size ancient bird thing.
I think it's a part of the snort wheeze but I think it's like there warning call the last 2 years I've had deer do this to me walking in the woods in the morning and pushed them out there beds and didn't see anything each time it happened after that

4 minutes long for a 10 second sound at the end of the video. Thanks for the anticipation
Ever hear a frustrated buck growling and grunting at a doe that won’t stand.
Heard this and sounded like a bunch of bulldozers crashing through the trees just now.
Brett Sutton singin' She loves you yeah yeah yeah
She’s mighty fine
Better yet, it's springtime, is that a buck or doe?
my dad calls this “blowing” they sometimes do it to him while he’s hunting if the deer can see or smells him
My dad went hunting for years. Never came home with any deer meat never talked about it either. Maybe cuz I'm a girl

The deer sounds kinda like an air pump
Does the “Columbia” location mean that your at the Columbia river? Because I live in hood river!
I think it's a part of the snort wheeze but I think it's like there warning call the last 2 years I've had deer do this to me walking in the woods in the morning and pushed them out there beds and didn't see anything each time it happened after that
Sounds like a fuckin steam locomotive trying to start up
