Kenny, whenver I search for a Reaper tut video, if I see one of yours in the the results, it's the first click. Always so concise and clear. Just to let you know your work is appreciated.
I was going crazy trying to figure out why the mapping was showing as changed but the sound was still the original mapping! I had the Map to Key filter below the sound FX which changed the mapping AFTER the sound was initiated. So yeah, make sure your Remapping FX is ABOVE the drum or synth in the FX list. Thanks for the vid, huge help!
I have no idea why you don't have more likes on this vid, It's unbelievably good, well informed, clear communication (despite being the coolest voice I've ever heard). I've watched another of your vids before, Seriously good skills, I'm only half way through and I'm buzzing by just how well this is working with my current set up with home drums electric kit and reaper. If I could like 100 000 times I would
This is fantastic. I just took a GGD Invasion midi grove and used this to map it to EZ Drummer 2 Metal. I put the MIDI to Key plugin in the regular FX slot and put the midi track as a subfolder to my drum track that is running EZ Drummer. Now I can remap any kit to my EZ Drummer kit.
This gets to the heart of how difficult configuring daws can be, in particular editing drum maps. Most people just want their shinny new controller to "work" without having to "do" anything. I know I do. You have given us, by example, a great how to edit the text files and not be afraid of it. This small bit of text editing can free us to use our controllers, the way we want to work. Editing and saving different drum maps for our drum plugins tied to our specific controllers. Your detail and specificity on why we should use the map with the js effect, will save me and my students, much frustration in the future, as I set up my studio for high school kids. Thanks much! Any chance you can do a video on super8?
Hey man, just want to say thanks for making this video! This technique is by far the easiest way to do this that I have found, and the way you've presented it made it that much easier. Been wanting to learn this for over a year.. Lots of these other tutorial guys are incredibly vague, can't articulate what they're trying to say, and really have no idea how to walk someone through any sort of process like this (as in-depth, step by step) and are often too specific or too broad. Liked and subbed, thanks for being smart.
Kenny, you rock. Your explanations are super clear. I'm a noob... but so far, you've been able to answer pretty much every question I've had in Reaper. Thank you!
My JS: MIDI Map To Key V2 plugin doesn't have the Note IN & Note OUT fields, but a black "screen" that says: Mapping Nothing to see here. But nothing ever happens. What am I doing wrong?

Many tips related to the subject matter of the videos are usable in other ways also. Keep learning folks! Thanks again Kenny for the great educational vids. Peace!

This is awesome, I tried to do the same in Ableton Live. Figured it out, with Midi Rack and Equally division by key and the Pitch utility for each key... but that was far more work. Did manage to get the Session Drums working with vDrums though...
MIDI Map to key v2 unfortunately does not work at my PC. When I use it, the Note In and Note Out drop down menus do not exist and below there is just a black screen with the text "Nothing to see here". Anyone else has this problem and knows a fix?
I have found the fix to this. Just go in and edit the map text file as in the video. The note in and out drop down menus are not needed. they only show you what key is being pressed. You have to figure out what your map is, then edit the file as you want. Find the channel that your drum pad works on (mine was 10 as well) and everything should work just fine with your new map.
Great video. I gotta problem, though. For some reason my JS Midi Map to Key 2 in Reaper doesn't show "Note In" or "Note Out," so I can't see what the notes are on my keyboard when I hit them. What should I do? I have an Arturia MicroBrute synth which can also be used as a Midi controller. I want to use the keyboard on it to control drums in Reaper. Help!
Yeah, it doesn't have "note in/out" displayed. You can use "ReaControlMidi" and "Show Log" to see the note you are playing instead. The rest of the "MIdi Map to Key v2" works the same as he explained.
Surely there must be an easier way to do this, than having to duplicate and open a .txt file. Can't you just some how drag and drop sounds to the drum pads? Or, is that just not possible? Maybe why people love Ableton so much hmm...
This is much more complicated than it needs to be. I found myself here for the first time looking to figure out how to set up my new electric kit with GGD(get good drums) through reaper. It ended up being as easy as just having kontakt open and the drums set as a midi input device, and just clicking the sense buttons beside each drum(button looks like a record icon) and hitting which pad i want it to correspond to.. Extremely easy and 1000 times more simple than this.
Kenny, nowadays does this method work for the sheet percussion notation too? I am desperated tryin to have a correct drum sheet while I play my electronic drums in real time! Please, help!!!
Is there no drag and drop method onto a pad? I have MPC Essentials that came with my MPK mini, but it only allows to record one track. And although it’s easy to map the pads with a simple drag and drop, the software itself doesn’t have as good of an explanation on how to use it and it’s not open like Reaper. Also, is there any way to have a list of sounds, choose a specific one, and then customize the sounds of each pad?

As always, great Video Kenny. Do you know if it is possible to do something similar using a Receive from say a drum VST like Jamstix on a different track instead of an external MIDI device? Not sure why it's not showing note in and out anymore but I found a work around. Add a second FX called VST: RealControlMIDI (Cockos) and then click the Show Log button. This will show what note and channel your pads and key presses are on the MIDI controller and you can edit the mapping file as he did in the video. After you are finished, just remouve the second FX.

Drums usualy located on channel 10 in midi sequencers so midi controllers assign pads to midi channel 10 by default, I think. Sure it can be changed in the settings of your controller to any other midi channel.

thanks a lot bro!
that is way too much work for something so simple
fuck yeah kenny!
cant get anything to show up in the JS plugin
how do I know if input channel is 10?
Drums usualy located on channel 10 in midi sequencers so midi controllers assign pads to midi channel 10 by default, I think. Sure it can be changed in the settings of your controller to any other midi channel.
