I have a 2001 submariner date that I’ve had it since new, I wear it everyday. I work in the oil and gas industry as a Millwright (Industrial Mechanic). This watch has seen it all, temps from the +40’s down to -50’s (Celsius) and it keeps going. I don’t abuse it, I use it. It gets a service every five years and a cleaning every once in a while when I am washing my car. I love my watch and it will be with me until the day I die. I really enjoy your videos, keep it up. Cheers 😎👍
Love the concept. My Grandpa had one watch, a Bulova from 1953 that lasted him his entire life. Was a tool for him and he used it every day. Watches back then were built different (after he passed I got his watch and it still works..., although probably needs a service).
I’m a mechanical engineer at a nuclear power plant. When I’m not wearing my Apple Watch, my go to is a Marathon Arctic JDD that looks almost identical to your Sinn. I like the radioactivity symbol on the dial because of where I work and I like that the day, date, and 24 hours markers will help me keep track when I have to switch over to night shift.
I have just bought a Sinn 556i, I have never given attention to Sinn before, mainly because I have been really into watches for just about 6 months now and didnt find time to dig into them before. But oh boy when I saw it on one of your videos, I instantly fell in love with the simplicity and the perfect enegeneering factor. It is such a cool brand that isnt too mainstream, cares a lot about quality and innovation and has a great history for such a young brand. The fit is just right. After that I have been starting to dig them more and more, finding their designs more appealing and learning about them. I can definetely say that in future I will grt another Sinn. Im a fan od 356 pilot classic , 104 and really dig their divers notably U50. Also I love the fact that even tho the demand is there they make less than 20000 watches per year. Thank you Teddy for discovering that brand to me and for giving the best watch info and content on the internet.
G Shock GA100 did four tours of Afghanistan and Iraq. Battery ran flat in about 2016 and was wearing an Eterna Kontiki then just replaced the battery myself. Talk about making a lot out of a little, it’s a simple joy wearing a G Shock again.
Tudor Black Bay Pro For me. I work as a chemical engineer at the industrial plant. I’m not to worried about it banged up, the GMT function helps me keep track of day light and shift work, WR is great , and I can where it confidently going to business meeting.
Hello from a fellow Ohioan! I'm a SAR technician (professionally certified, but volunteer), and my day job is design engineering. My daily tool watch is a black PVD Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical, but mainly because I happened to find it on clearance at a local shop 😄. I was originally after a Field Auto, but I love it. Legibility is my #1 priority, closely followed by a low profile on the wrist; this watch does both very well, and anything else is kind of just a bonus. I'm always crawling through brush, reaching into bags of equipment, dealing with pack and climbing straps, and wrenching on machinery in tight spaces, and it's VERY annoying when my watch snags on something lol. I'm also constantly checking time in the field for radio check-ins, taking spotting notes, you name it. If I had to complain, Tritium would be nice for night ops, and I do miss the date functionality for daily use. But to be honest, I've found that white dials are perfectly fine even on moonless/cloudy nights, and I keep a Casio F91W (with day-date) in my chest radio rig as backup! I considered a Marathon GP because of the Tritium, but I think the sharp edges and corners would cause it to snag more, I'm not big on the small strap width, and it doesn't flex quite as nicely as a casual or workwear piece. Their "SAR" model, ironically, seems like it would be a giant pain to wear lol. Compass bezels are redundant as you'd probably guess, since we operate using specialized GPS software and are required to carry 2x Silva Rangers and maps as backup, and know primitive land nav. But, the Alpinist's looks GREAT as an aesthetic choice. My next watch will likely be either a Khaki Field Auto, a Seiko SPB121 (little less low-pro, but damn is that green gorgeous in person!), or a Christopher Ward Sandhurst. Really dig the Sinn and a few others, but I'm more of a $500-$750 kinda guy... SAR gear is already tough on the budget 😅. Thanks for the video!
As an FYI, the Alpinist is also available with a black dial (SPB117). It lists at $25 more but comes with a bracelet instead if a strap. It has a slightly different dial (no large 2 4 6 8 10 12, and different hour markers). I prefer this layout, but do love the green dial of the SPB121.
Yeah, I like the SPB117 a lot more. Clean and simple and more purposeful. I've always thought the SPB121 just looks kind of weird - it's like they tried to cram too many different design elements into one watch.
The Submariner is my favorite beater. Not because it's cheap. It objectively isn't. But because it sort of begs to be worn a lot and used without babying it. It's hard to describe unless you have one. It overcomes that fear that would normally exist wearing a watch of that price.
It's a watch, it doesn't overcome fears. A submariner is for showing off, not for telling the time. If you wanted to tell the time, you would have got far more accurate watches for far cheaper. Please don't kid yourself.
For Seiko alpinist I'm more of a fan of Laurel alpinist. I think it is way more versatile than normal or baby alpinist. I basically wear it everywhere from Thru-hike, diving, to meeting my clients in the office, and even formal events.
I love my Sinn 104 white dial! It’s solid, scratch resistant and very classy, but functional. Happy Thanksgiving to you guys! Currently wearing my SeikoLuxe 1968 reissue! Dial is amazing! Black Friday looking at your site though! Always looking for my next watch….lol, it’s a disease!
Oris makes a couple of "tool watches" that have interesting functions. The Oris Pro-Pilot Altimeter has an analog altimeter in it. The Oris Aquis Depth Gauge has a depth gauge that shows your depth under water.
Longines legend diver is my fav on this whole list and could easily be an only watch in my opinion. Special mention to the hands on the Hamilton. Love being able to see the hours through he hands
I would also consider for the under $1,000 aviation category, the Glycine Airman Vintage GMT. Really nice watch with date complication and GMT function. If that one has too much going on, the Airpilot is a good one as well.
I have the Alpinist - love it! I have the Explorer - love it! I now have watch envy and a need to achieve a trinity - I've actually been looking at the Tudor Ranger, telling myself that it is silly, I don't need it. And yet, now I do. Joys of being a watch enthusiast. 😁
Damasko DA36 that has been on my wrist 24/7 for the past 8 years diving, hiking, construction work, hunting, fishing, boating, board rooms. For me it has been the ultimate GADA
I use my G-Shock GW-5610U for almost everthing. It’s my most worn watch! I only use my luxury watches for the special occasions and for office sometimes
3:55 Damasko ds30 is in the same price category and is 4mm thinner than the circula. Also for affordable pilotwatches, I'd start with Laco because why not? They are THE pilot watch manufacturer and their fliger pros start from 800 and with different customizations go up to only 1200.
Pick from Teddy's list, 1st choice is Seiko Alpine , low price and can do anything on daily work or activity. 2nd choice is Ball Engineer III date in green dial, good looking and it is 1/3 of Rolex Explorer, and half the price of Omega Aquatarer , Rolex Submariner and IWC Engineer is over 10000 usd are actually over priced much. Not considered.
I'm a land/technical surveyor. To me a tool watch is a watch, that can stand up to being worn while using a sledge hammer. Water resistance needs to be better than an arms length into water/mud.
Tudor Ranger is da bomb. It looks boring and utilitarian but it fits the description of a tool that tells the time. In a way, it looks more elegant than similar watches a fraction of the price. I bought the bracelet variant, however I also purchased the 'overpriced' NATO strap as an extra as it is a better fit for a field watch. I used the bracelet on my BB58 as it is definitely better with a T-fit adjustment and the absence of fake rivets
Idea for a future topic: watches for guys with bigger wrists. Perhaps with a dial size ranging from 42-45mm and especially showing also other than dive watches which seem to be the most prominent category in this size range. I feel like that hasn't been looked into that much compared to highlighting smaller options.
That's a video I'd like to see! I've got an 8 inch wrist! I'm finding it hard to get a watch they're all so small" like a ladies watch" I'm a bit older now my eyesight isn't what it used to be. Bigger watches are easier to glance at once they get bigger they also get thick and bulky. I've had many watches over the years the bigger ones all got destroyed. "I'm a motorcyclist outdoors type guy and I'll stick my hand in anything that's why I stopped wearing my explorer because I scratched the glass the day I got it replaced. My speedmaster 125 bought new sits in the drawer with the explorer. When I bought them new they weren't that expensive but now they're too expensive to wear at my age "don't want to get mugged" currently wearing a speedmaster homage as it has always been my favourite. Just wish it came out in a few bigger sizes and didn't sit so proud on the wrist. I like the Idea of a GMT duel time zone as here in Australia in Qld we don't have daylight saving time but the rest of Australia does if I've got to ring or order something that duel time zone is very handy.*be been looking at the big Casio edifice range seems they make larger watches that have those features and aren't as thick I've searched all the micro brands and found some very interesting ideas. The issue is that they all seem to make smaller watches anyway I just found your page and am liking it
Hi Teddy, what would be the best watches to withstand 150 degrees + F temps as well as steam for 30+ minutes? Yes, I’d like one I can wear in the sauna.
@andrewmonahan9510 Sinn EZM 3F or EZM 3. it’s rated and tested to withstand that temp and has a special capsule built into the side of the case that draws out moisture from entering the case/movement while preventing the glass from fogging!
Hanhart Preventor and Archimede Outdoor as Land/Adventure wearers should have a honorable mention. Especially the Archimede as the outdoor is offered in titanium at 20 ATM WR anit-magnetic.
That BALL watch.... MAAAN. That is perfection! I wish I had 2.7 k stored, would not blink twice to buy it! What an amazing look and you can actually SEE the quality of this piece with a naked eye
@@nathanf1934 Not at all... Other than the case shape i see no similarities... Completely different style with hands, hour markers, bracelet... 90% of other "dressy" watches look more like date just than this one
Just 2 questions: Can you use the crown of the longines super compressor to rotate the bezel in water? If not, that is counter productive isn't it? Don't you think low pressure resistance is kind of gimmicky? I mean ordinary watches can be used in the same environment (inside a passenger aircraft) without any issues.
I like to use a chronograph to assess irregular pulses manually, not only for rate but quality. Albeit helpful, sole reliance on a pulsometer scale can be sloppy, hence making this method of scaling a nostalgic novelty.
Style aside, pilots need a 24 hour multi timezone function. Air time is UTC. They don’t need commuter/traveler quick set. That’s for airline passengers.
I don't think that a true tool watch could be any mechanical/automatic watch . A solar quartz is far more durable and reliable than the best mechanical. I ride bicycles every day and my automatics get left at home when I'm riding. Too much vibration and shock. But my solar quartz stays with me on the bike. I love my automatics but not as tools. I think practically speaking, automatics are more toys than tools.
Sad to not see the Longines spirit under the air category…. Thanks for making such an interesting video Teddy! If possible, pls do a video on the Longines Spirit vs IWC Mark 20…. I’ve been contemplating about which one to get…. Brands and cost aside, just good old watch v watch
Day to day I have to sign paperwork and time intervals from 7 min to 35 minutes depending on the day. I rotate from a bulova lunar pilot, 45mm with date window I had for 4 years and a Seiko prospex 41mm with date window that I purchased back in August I do bust out some Casios from time to time. If I get a promotion I might do a Tudor chrono or speedmaster 97 or maybe GS chrono
Fantastic picks and comments, as usual! Except for the Sinn in the 1-4k Pilot category. We know how much Ted is in for the brand, and there is plenty of reason for that, but…. Come on… And please, nothing detrimental to the brand, but it just does not look or feel like a genuine pilot watch…. What about a Laco? Just a thought. Except for that, great content! Congrats!
Teddy, it's admirable that you donate 2 dollars to charity for every dollar you spend on watches. Which charities do you support and how can we, your subscribers, help in the causes that are important to you?
6:54 funny you bring up the bumblebee, i just bought a brand new bumblebee last week lol, seems it's an older version of the Aqua Terra, or am i wrong?
I’d like to see some tough gmt’s. I work in the oilfield on the other side of the country. Need a watch (no phones), it’s gotta be tough as I’m always climbing in rough places and turning wrenches, would like to see the time at work and the time at home.
Teddy and the rest of the team at your Authorized Dealer, can you reach out to Tutima Glashütte to be a distributor for them? I would probably buy one, but they’re harder to get in the US.
Every time I want to get a ball watch the watches seem to be not in stock. So confusing if they are selling out or just unable to deliver production....
Just got my grail watch this week: Alpinist....I know everyone thinks a grail has to be 2k or more, but for me, the Alpinist was perfect.
If some1 ever put a price tag on what can be considered a grail or not. They are not a true enthusiast
@@philipbrault3109 agree
It such a special watch. The charisma and charm never wears off like it does with other watches.
The alpinist glows without needing rare metal or diamonds, which not every watch can do. My grail as well (green dial only)

My Tudor 7928 lived through two tours in Vietnam. It experienced mud, blows, humidity. Maybe one of the strongest watches ever made.

Full metal G Shocks are god tier.
I used my full metal so much you can hardly read time on it. God-tier watch indeed.
Indeed. Waterproof to 200 meters. Build like a tank. Super accurate. And having all the extra's like the 24 hour countdown timer and world time.

Albeit helpful, sole reliance on a pulsometer scale can be sloppy, hence making this method of scaling a nostalgic novelty.
great video as always
Protrail is a great choice.
Style aside, pilots need a 24 hour multi timezone function. Air time is UTC. They don’t need commuter/traveler quick set. That’s for airline passengers.
Maybe just for the kicks a solar one would be cool.
Nice review teddy
Why the SPB121 Alpinist? Get the JDM version with red GMT hand and no cyclops - SBEJ005. Much better looking and often cheaper too!
Luminox 3000 series for is THE tool watch, am I wrong here?
I have a sinn u50 and it’s gorgeous
Beautiful list
Let me suggest the Nivada Gretchen Super Antarctic as s "Land" starting point. Mine is on a 50's style Forstner Klip.
Have to ask - where is that cord jacket from? Looks great
Alpinist needs to be fully brushed. The polishing on it is what putts me off to buy it.
As a pilot I like having a watch that dos 2 time zones. Zulu time is used a lot
Should do an update video on "The BEST Watches For $5,000 in Every Category"
Day to day I have to sign paperwork and time intervals from 7 min to 35 minutes depending on the day. I rotate from a bulova lunar pilot, 45mm with date window I had for 4 years and a Seiko prospex 41mm with date window that I purchased back in August I do bust out some Casios from time to time. If I get a promotion I might do a Tudor chrono or speedmaster 97 or maybe GS chrono
Is there any watch that handles extreme cold? Wondering how much temperature will affect them. Thanks for any help
Congrats!
Great picks 👌🏽! I would like to nominate Seiko SJE101J1 as best “water” watch haha.
It’s gotta be Seiko best before you go Grande haha😂
And happy holidays everybody!
Silencio, empezó mi novela favorita. 😮😊
Great video! Thanks!
Wish Teddy would do a review on Venezianico. I just purchased the Arsenale Ultra black.
As someone who works in what would be considered the "engineer category", I'm almost embarrassed to share a occupational name with desk engineers.
You can't have a toolwatch video without a single G Shock in it. Come on now.
Teddy, it's admirable that you donate 2 dollars to charity for every dollar you spend on watches. Which charities do you support and how can we, your subscribers, help in the causes that are important to you?
Nice list but no Panerais? It’s a brand that defines themselves as a luxury tool watch
Drop the BALL Teddy, your brand deserves better…
6:54 funny you bring up the bumblebee, i just bought a brand new bumblebee last week lol, seems it's an older version of the Aqua Terra, or am i wrong?
I’d like to see some tough gmt’s. I work in the oilfield on the other side of the country. Need a watch (no phones), it’s gotta be tough as I’m always climbing in rough places and turning wrenches, would like to see the time at work and the time at home.
You need a Pelagos FXD MN GMT my friend...
@ now that’s a tool watch! Very nice
High end aviation I would say Breitling Aerospace
Teddy and the rest of the team at your Authorized Dealer, can you reach out to Tutima Glashütte to be a distributor for them? I would probably buy one, but they’re harder to get in the US.
How is the Pelagos not on here? Might be the most definitive tool watch on the planet.
Hey Teddy, Most of the items in your shop are unavailable. Kindly take those back☺☺
Every time I want to get a ball watch the watches seem to be not in stock. So confusing if they are selling out or just unable to deliver production....
Citizen garrison watch. Similar to the alpine?
