Dark wave, or darkwave, is a music genre that emerged from the new wave and post-punk movement of the late 1970s. Dark wave compositions are largely based on minor key tonality and introspective lyrics and have been perceived as being dark, romantic and bleak, with an undertone of sorrow.

For this song in particular, its just some heavy compression and singing up close to the mic to get an aggressive tone then a reverb plate and some slap delay.

I’m a beginner and I was wondering should I get an electric guitar or is there like a keyboard or something that has various instruments I can play in one to just like mess with it and see what I come up with … I want darkwave sounds though idk how to explain

I would say choose one, learn music theory and start. The sooner you start producing, the faster you will learn

I've been playing guitar for decades, but I primarily use VSTi for synths and Kontakt just has too many great libraries to choose from. For a great synth, I would look at the Oberheim OBX, (Synapse Audio has a killer emulation of the OBX). BTW, Geddy Lee from Rush used an OBX on the song Tom Sawyer.
I agree about at least learning basic theory, but as long as it sounds good, it sounds good, know what I mean?
