    thanks for all your content and instruction Tyler! I'm a 50yr old beginner, and your channel has taught me so much. I have the hardest time landing fish on jigs with big weed/hook guards, so this will be helpful! Any advice setting a swim shad/swim bait? I find a bunch of hybrids and go back and forth between crankbait sets and something lighter. Keep up the great work and God bless!

    I cant set the hook has hard as some people, not because I cant, I just haven't seen it necessary . At the same time, I've stuck hooks deep in fish with a simple, quick wrist movement. I think it depends on gear and lure setup and technique. Ripping lips causes a larger hole, therefore having a higher chance of barbs coming off.

    • @TylersReelFishing
      @TylersReelFishing  4 роки тому

      It can cause a larger hole, but especially on a long cast, a soft hookset on that much line stretch ain’t gonna get that fish in the boat

    • @ballzybaits4414
      @ballzybaits4414 4 роки тому +1

      course, that's why I mentioned technique. I used mono most of my fishing days. However, changing to floro and braid has helped tremendously because the technique I used to set the hook with mono which has a ton of line stretch, now has the same movement but less line stretch. This equates to "harder" hook set, same technique hence why I also mentioned gear setup.
      I'm not saying my way is the right way, its all up to the fisherman to use which technique is more efficient to them. As always, great video.

      ICYAngler nah some fish u need to smash em or they get off. Your right soft mouths may rip but on the other end of things a half set hook will also rip out causing damage. For me when trolling lakers you must drive the hook deep

  • @aaronborgic

    With a baitcaster, during the hookset, do you have your thumb on the spool (not allowing the drag to slip) or do you let a tight drag do the work?

    • @TylersReelFishing
      @TylersReelFishing  3 роки тому

      Hmm, 15lb braid is a little light for my liking on a MH. All depends on your knot

  • @bruceraiken2806
    @bruceraiken2806 Рік тому

    I'm just starting to spend more time with Keitech swimbaits, and other than the more simple ball jig heads which tend to have lighter wire hooks, when you're going with an underspin like an Owner Flashy Swimmer the hooks on them are definitely of a heavier gauge, and I'm wondering whether 12# (which I'd prefer to use in clearer northern waters) is adequate in terms of getting a good hookset without snapping the line on that impact. I'm hoping the answer might be when fishing swimbaits, your bite tends to be what you feel as your rod begins to load, such that the setting is more of a sweeping set (not as abrupt as it might be with a jig in dense weeds, etc.) which would allow that 12# to likely be adequate for that purpose. What do you think?

    • @TylersReelFishing
      @TylersReelFishing  Рік тому

      No, on a flashy swimmer with a bigger hook, go with at least 15lb

    • @TylersReelFishing
      @TylersReelFishing  4 роки тому +1

      It’s the Anglr Bullseye! Pretty cool deal for pre-fishing/breaking down water but even better for actually fishing. The Anglr app is basically a digital logbook that allows you to drop waypoints and saves all sorts of data about each fish catch that you can come back in later and view or edit. Stuff like wind speed and direction, air temp, barometric pressure, etc. The app is free but they offer add-ons like the Bullseye that just make it a lot easier to use. That’s the little thing on my hat in the video. It’s like 30 bucks but you can bluetooth link it to your phone and that way each time you catch a fish you just hit the Bullseye and it logs all that stuff without having to take your phone out each time. People compare ANGLR to Fishbrain, but it’s much more helpful at making you a better angler than Fishbrain

    I see what my problem is now...I'm not limber enough. My back can't do limbo anymore.
    On a serious note. setting the hook with your back is not healthy. You can do the same hook-set from the hips; which is much quicker and a lot less injury prone to your back.

    One thing you didnt show was how to set the hook when using a technique where you have slack line. I hear "reel down and set the hook" But too many times someone reels down only to reel too much and pull the lure out of their mouth. Or do you reel WHILE yanking up on the rod? Or if theres not too much slack just set the hook higher up like rod tip pointing behind you and then reel to get the slack out after the hook set. I think what you're doing prior to the hook set is really important and your videos here didnt show it.

    • @TylersReelFishing
      @TylersReelFishing  7 місяців тому

      You reel down, point the rod at the fish, then set up. Maybe there’s more I subconsciously do, but I can’t think of it sitting here

    I respectfully disagree with your opinion on little to no hookset with the drop shot. Probably 75% of the people who use drop shots up north are using them on weedlines with a neko hook and t-rigged roboworm. For this reason there is a decent bit of a hookset needed to get the hook through the worm and then into the fishes mouth and out of the weeds. Just my 2 cents
